I started writing in prep school, and was one of the only students to ever win the Payson-Bird Prize, (for Excellence in English Composition), as a freshman. The professor who gave me the award was an alumni of both Cambride and Oxford, and while I never took his encouragement seriously, he nonetheless saw something special in me at that young age. I wish I had listened to him more intently, but I had too many other interests, (music and girls the most pressing), and I didn't start writing again "seriously" until the Fall of 2016, and joined The Soup in December of that year.

Since then I have enjoyed this community and grown a great deal as a writer, and more importantly, made a number of wonderful friends, for who I am truly thankful. I have been to many other similar sites, but found this one to be the best for me. I try very hard to create original metaphor and fresh, unusual imagery, but do so in ways that make SENSE. I find poems that are stuffed full of "big" or fancy words for the sake of sounding articulate or "deep", to be of little import and interest, but unusual words used in creative and unique ways can be a bonus to good writing, (most intelligent people know the difference).

In contrast, using simple words in unusual ways can be equally as beautiful and unique, and there is an art to that style of application as well, and for those reasons words themselves are fascinating to me. I believe I have been given a gift that enables me to put those words together in ways that elicit emotion, but that the creative intuition and acumen that transforms those elements into beauty and poetic excellence, is something that comes from withOUT - that we are all just tools for a higher power, and that staying in tune with that energy is critical to creativity.

I hope you'll take a moment to read some of my poems, and please leave a comment, if you would be so kind. Blessings!

"Oh, you're SO talented - so gifted!"

Do you ever hear that phrase or something similar? How do you answer? I always try to say, "Thank you - so are YOU!", and pray it leads to the following discussion. I think we "artistic" types sometimes feel ourselves of rarefied air, and while we writers DO have a talent with words, that just makes us poets, and not an elite class. Yes, poetry is a rare talent, (one I'll never perfect), but talent is not rare ...

EVERYone is gifted - EVERYone has talent and exceptional abilities, but everyone is DIFFERENT, and sometimes those talents and abilities are not as readily visible, or even as tangible, as they are for others. YOU are talented and gifted, (perhaps in ways you've yet to discern), whether you realize it or not, and if you don't, it's still waiting for you to discover it ...

Or maybe you have multiple gifts but haven't found one that inspires you. Just because that gift may not be considered "artistic" or "creative", doesn't mean it's any less noteworthy or important, any less substantive or integral, or any less of a gift, especially when it comes to the contributions you can make to humanity, or the blessing you can be to others by way of your talents ...

FINDING those gifts is not always an easy task, as there are many things that we pursue simply because we love them, (things that we may not have an inclination toward or talent for), and many things we may have a talent for that are simply not a part of our lives, or are not placed in our paths, due to circumstances or timing. Einstein said this, quite correctly:

"Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."

FIND your gift and develop it, whatEVER it may be, and never think that it's not as wonderful or important as anyone else's, simply because you can't frame it and hang it on the wall, or put a cover on it for publishing, or perform it on stage, or win the Nobel Peace Prize with it. Enjoy it and share it with the world, be proud of it and find joy within it, (and always stay humble). Maybe you're a fish, and trees are just not your thing ...

So ... SWIM!!

Your last couple of sentences are so important.....yes we are all different, and each person may have a talent that contributes something wonderful to humanity (we hope)..., but staying humble is often the key to standing out above the crowd . I love this blog :) !! Wise words !

Thank you SO much, Carrie, and you are so correct ... arrogance is a major turn off, and good work will always speak for itself. Blessings and thank you for the comment, my friend! :-) <3

Einstein quote: priceless. Great Blog. Perhaps if we saw a spectrum of gifts and track their impact across humanity, we'd better accept how these essential talents are distributed and take what we've been blessed with and offer ours freely for the common benefit. Then all would likely discover their inherent contribution vehicle and seek only to serve one another. A return to a Garden so to speak. :-)))

Very well-said, Wayne, and a profound insight that we would all benefit from ... it would certainly serve to offer humanity a more nurturing and creativity-inspiring environment. Return to the garden, indeed!

Finding out the gifts you have to offer humanity takes some a lifetime and I agree with all you have said Greg. Wonderful advice!

Indeed it does, Connie - I didn't start with poetry until about two years ago, and even that wasn't "seriously" ... it's never too late, my friend, for new discoveries as well! :-) <3

Talent doesn't always mean success. Everyone has talent but not everyone has the perseverance to succeed.

Andrea - I am quite sure some of those people have not discovered their true gifts yet, sadly ... some people WANT to be great singers, and just don't have the correct gift. Ouch! :-) <3

I'm in agreement also. Everyone has something to contribute, if they choose to. Sadly many squander their talents by pursuing a life of crime or illicit drug use.

Indeed, talents and gifts only bloom when they are recognized, appreciated and put to good use ... and they can certainly be MIS-applied, as well. Blessings, friend! :-)
