At The Footbridge: A Reminder

Blog Posted:6/16/2017 3:31:00 PM

Hullo Soupers;

I've noticed in the blogs that there has been some focus on the title, "At The Footbridge" (as the title of poems, contests, etc).

In 1999, I wrote a poem that I titled:
"At The Footbridge".
At the time, I figured there were probably many already existing poems that were titled as such.
I'm attempting to confirm this now. I think there's a poem with the same title that was written around 1948 as a dedication to the Quesnel footbridge that spans the Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada. I'm also searching for a Japanese poet who wrote a poem titled, "At The Footbridge". Of course, that title was written in Japanese. I'm guessing that the Japanese poem was written before 1850. I'm still searching for it.

If by some crazy fluke in reality, I'm the first person who, over the course of thousands of years of poetry, titled a poem as "At The Footbridge" (I doubt it!), I would be honoured (lol) by anyone subsequently using that title (for poems, contests, novels, essays, movies, songs, etc.), and, if so, I'm also already honoured by the poems on PS that use the same title. Though, I believe that I don't have ownership over that title—a title that has made my day.

That's all :D

all this talk of bridges - building and burning etc...thought I'd share an old joke. /A guy found a magic lamp and rubbed it. The genie popped out and said she could make one wish come true. The guy thought hard then said "I hate flying and would love to just drive to Hawaii. Could you build me a bridge from SF to Waikiki?" Genie shook her head and said, "That is a really difficult wish to grant, perhaps you can think of another?" Guy thinks harder then goes, "OH yeah! I'd love to understand women's minds and their thoughts!" Genie then says, "Did you want two or four lanes?" :)

My suggestion to anyone suffering from uptight-I-right-us is this: "If you're serious, you really understand that it's important that you laugh as much as possible and admit that you're the funniest person you ever met. You have to laugh. Admit that you're funny. Otherwise, you die in solemnity. Maya Angelou" I am quite funny myself. I make mistakes all the time. Then, I say, "I am sorry for being a dunderhead. I was wrong." Then, I laugh with people at how silly I was. After that, we move on. I remember telling Andrea four years ago, I DID NOT LIKE ENJAMBMENT! Hahahahahahaha! I've said lamer things since and will say silly things again. It's called being human.

I've done similar things in the past (and will most likely do them again in the future), and when I fess up to my own idiocy or whatever, it has truly helped me to grow.

So, that first discussion, lead to me developing my skills and --eventually--publication! All because...lol.. I WAS A GOOF. I was a 'perfect rhyme, end stop each line, nothing to write home about' poet. Fessing up that I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT POETRY freed me to learn and stretch my wings.

:DD One of my most embarrassing moments on Soup. I said something like, "Oh, it always feels like I'm falling off a line when it does that, like I'm being pushed along." The discussion left me with so many questions that I researched enjambment.. and then I NEVER stopped reading.

We don't know what has happened to any person in the past... most things have a reason. It took a recent situation for me to force myself to GROW UP. I'm fifty-one this year. Who is it that I want to be? Some famous guy said, "He who is guilty, cast the first stone." He nailed that one.

The shame of it all is that adults are acting like they're playing cowboys and Indians. Who wears the black hats and who dons the white? My point is that there should NOT be sides taken. There should be no reason to hurl stones or shoot arrows. Lay down your weapons! But I'm afraid that the person(s) to whom this applies most is blind to their faults, or else they just don't care.

Agreed, Lin. But sometimes people like to prolong the conflict, right? They circle around someone, stones at the ready. EYE've seen quite a lot of that. Sometimes, the best thing is start fresh, actually write something that isn't meant to fan the flames.

Thanks for your thoughts, Cyndi. Far too much relevance is placed on such trivialities by some people. And far too many blogs are being posted on redundant matters. It's a poetry site on which poets are free to choose their style, words, and yes, even titles. No one holds copyrights to titles.

That being said, the Soup atmosphere can lead to feelings of persecution, a sense of not belonging and a heightening of insecurities. One day, I worry something truly tragic will occur.

Sorry Chris, I'm gonna ramble here. Oh jeez. Three blogs by 1 person to remind people on who first thought of this very Original title?! Somebody get a grip already! I saw the 3rd one pertaining to it and had to laugh & then I got sad then boggled & then My very snooty and snobby side is coming out now, but I'm gonna rein it in. First, sorry-- but who cares?! Unless one has legal rights to that particular phrase, just let it go. What is this? Seeking for validation or something? Yay it got popular because of the collab! Kudos to Jan! What, she wants a FOOTnote in there or something? Boggled. I am boggled. My 2-3 yr olds behave better when it comes to getting dibs on stuff, they know how to Share

Hi Lin, thank you for agreeing with me, because if not, I will whine and whine and post a blog even if I don't have a PM, haha!----- Hi Jan, I think it's really cool how your collab has grown and you are right, we all need to inject fun sometimes. Haha! Good for you for double checking your new title ;) ----Hello, Cyndi, yuppers! Not completely sure what the underlying issues are, but they're there. I agree to what you said about becoming the bigger person. But sometimes, when provoked (and then there's that wall, boinnng!) it's massively irritating. Yes, ignoring it can be the best way to go. ---Hi Chris, oops, warned you I would ramble. Good for you for not being a worrywart (this kabute just had to say that, haha!). I literally laughed aloud when I saw that haiku blog, I also found it funny, but after laughing heartily, I found it sad that she would resort to that. Like what you said, she's suffering. Just continue to be that bigger person.

Too much to reply to. Kabute, I'm glad that any shared info has been helpful. Yeah, I began sharing info in 2010 and always made sure to add disclaimers that I'm not telling people how to do it—simply offering suggestions, tips, tastes, and opinions. I don't worry about whatever blog/s toady puts up. I find her haiku blog to be hilarious (I have a weird sense of humour and can laugh at myself along the way), and for me it adds to the entertainment factor of poetrysoup. It could be dementia on her part, or a mixture of nature and nuture. Who knows. Whatever the case, it's obvious that she is suffering.

Nikko, there is so much MORE to this than a title, right? Hurt feelings back and forth, over a few years, I think. It takes a bigger person to both stop targeting a member (via coded poems, pokes and claps in comments, winks, give-it-to-thems!) and it takes a bigger person to ignore the provocation and immaturity of those coded attacks. I have finally put those on total ignore. They want to snip/snap and blah blah ... they can go right ahead. Water off a duck... as I forge ahead with my writing. The angry party in this case should do the same.

Thanks Nikko:-) I am delighted when my simple poems inspire other folks to write and have FUN because it is so lacking at times. I have checked the web and the title for the new collaboration is totally unique and was invented by me :-) I am saddened to see 2 new blogs today especially the one directed at Chris and haiku, it is so sad to see such behaviour:-( hugs jan xx

And then another issue being raised over *ahem*, somebody "telling" how to write haiku. What is this, some kind of tactic to ahhh I don't know... As i understood it, you were only giving guidelines, and you said something like you weren't telling people how to write haiku. Plus you didn't come out of the blue, geez, you've been sharing tips on writing haiku way back what? 2010? Personally, and I know others as well, who are grateful for what you share about haiku. I learned a lot from you, so thank you, Chris. I can only roll my eyes now... I wish there was a rule that didn't allow for such close-minded blogs/ thoughts plus comments are always turned off. How convenient.

Just like what you stated here, you came up with the similar title 18 years ago & it's been used before, so what's the issue? It's not as if it's so unique. I find it sad that somebody would keep on pressing the issue, makes me realize and even scared just how caught up people can be over here. Yiikes. Wake up call for me. There are faaaar more pressing issues to tackle, to stress out on than a title. I'm gonna go waaay off tangent here. Right this minute, people live in fear over so many issues across the world, people are getting displaced, Dying, getting killed and here in this little "haven"... Yeah a mountain over a title. Wow.
Date: 6/16/2017 7:08:00 PM
Truth be told I do extensive research on all my titles to make sure I'm stepping on someone's toes, but then, you know the joy I get by offending people.

In all good faith I send this message to those who comment, and especially to Jan. lol I stand at the base of the 'Bridge of Five Toes.' Can someone tell me if there will be a toll to pay for using that title or for crossing this bridge? Is that an acceptable title for a poem? One that will not be given a thought of infringing on the dreaded "p" word?

I'm not sure, Agnes. I'm searching my extensive hokku/waka notes. There might be an exact "At The Footbridge" title in Japanese, written between 200-300 years ago.

Thanks for your input, Agnes. Yes, I came across those titles as well (including below). Also, Monet's famous painting, "The Japanese Footbridge" (1899: oil on canvas: overall: 81.3 x 101.6 cm (32 x 40 in.), isn't the exact same wording, but...:D. I love that painting.
