How Does PoetrySoup Provide this Wonderful Website?

Blog Posted:5/22/2017 3:15:00 AM

PoetrySoup has made a change so that ads must be enabled to use PoetrySoup. Why? Without advertising-income, PoetrySoup can't make website enhancements. We want to continue to make PoetrySoup better. We also want to keep PoetrySoup alive and it is expensive to maintain an international website like PoetrySoup. Thus, since PoetrySoup is a free website (and we want to keep it that way), ads must be enabled to use it.

If you have a problem with ads covering part of the page, please send us a screenshot of the page. If you are using a mobile phone, tablet, or desktop computer, we do not want ads to cover content. In fact, that is prohibited by our advertisers. So, if an advertisement covers content, that is a technical problem on our end that we need your help with. Please, please help us with this, we cannot test our website on every device being used, so we desperately need your assistance with this.

If an ad is sexually explicit or revealing, please take a screenshot of it and email it to us so we can block that advertiser!

Thanks for understanding and more wonderful website features to come.

Have received a negative criticism about one of my Trump poems. This is the primary way of relieving frustration. Shooting for 4,000 poems by June 26th my 76th birthday.

I'm a premium member. So PoetrySoup for me is NOT free. My old desktop computers do not have enough spare memory to accommodate ads. If you need money... Then charge people. Even increase the rates. I would prefer you leave the premium members alone from ads. My health and medical costs won't allow me a new computer for a very long time. I still owe on my last surgery tho it is slowly being paid off... But then I'll literally be having another one. Stop playing with your premium subscribers. Perhaps you want... too many new improvements. I'm sure they would be nice... but to throw up that ad blocker message to block a paying customer... Sounds like a lose... lose proposition to me.

PS. I have epilepsy and flashing and moving adds are an irritant to my mind.

TPS whilst I understand the need to obtain revenue for the site it is extremely off putting for anyone just coming on to the site to read poems especially a person who is NOT a member. If they try to access the site when they have ad block switched on they are greeted with the huge banner which reads " Welcome to PoetrySoup! It looks like you're using an ad blocker. That's okay. But without advertising-income, we can't keep making PoetrySoup awesome". . I understand, I have disabled my ad blocker. Let me into PoetrySoup!" TPS You have to understand that some people have ad blockers installed by a relative/friend etc (my son installed mine) and they have no idea how to remove them.

You do not have to remove ad blockers, just click the little ad blocker icon on your browser and allow ads on PoetrySoup.

I have to say PST, I don't like the ad between the poets name and info and the poem they've posted. It's like an invasion of the poets space. A step too far for me.

See, I agree. I don't want an ad on my pretty poem page.
Date: 5/22/2017 4:56:00 PM
I dont mind ads unless they cover my whole page..and are in ways disrespectful ones...Thanks Tps.

Many of the ads flash, zoom so that they are in your face and that is why 'people just can't ignore ads'. Poetry is something you need to concentrate all your attention to when you read it, not like a newspaper article. I am considering not renewing my premium membership if this policy remains. Surely payment should have a benefit in not having to put up with ads.

Once cache cleared you can reinstall adblock and pause will work.

Unfortunately people cannot read about this cache (below) issue if access is blocked. Perhaps a bulk email to all members is overdue!!

For those having trouble getting Adblock etc. to switch off, even after removing it, you may need to clear your cache 'from the beginning of time'. The pause feature does not work if you have the pages cached.

I agree that Premium Members who contribute to the site financially, each year, and via poetry contributions, should be exempt from the Block Adblock access ban.

Ads are a part of life nowadays. The skill is in ignoring them. How about free for one month? Newcomers could post some poems, enter contests etc and get a "feel" for this wonderful site.

In reply to your comment TPS. On the TV and radio I have an 'off button' on my computer I had an ad blocker until I was forced to re install it so I can access Poetry Soup.

It still confuses us why people just can't ignore them. Ads are on almost every website.

I don't know why, with "over 32,000 members" you can't allow paying members to have no ads on their page. Or maybe at least lifetime members? Is that a possibility?

We are considering that as a possibility for Lifetime Premium Members. We just need to figure out how to implement that.
Date: 5/22/2017 7:54:00 AM
I don't mind the ads as long as they are respectful.to a poetry site, something that would be of interest to writers but sometimes they are just links to things unwanted by most here, if I click on one it is by accident. Dating sites, gossip papers are not relevant. Have you any control of the type of ads allowed. An ad should never block our submiting or editing, reading or judging.

Can you also get rid of political advertising - I had one today on how to rate Donald Trump!

Yes, we can control the ad type to some degree. For instance, we do not allow dating sites, sexuality, gambling & betting, or religion ads.
Date: 5/22/2017 7:01:00 AM
I understand that money makes the world go round, so poetry soup must do what it must to stay active. Personally when I'm going to write, I'm so engrossed, I don't focus on anything but that....tunnel vision!

I agree, the midpage ad, between the title, author links and the poem is particularly odious, perhaps more so as the same ad is also at the top of the page.

That's what we do. We just ignore them. :-)

I don't like the intrusive ads and videos right above the poem as they interfere with the premium membership own photos and videos. That spot shouldn't be used for ads it takes away from the poetry.

To the Team of Poetry Soup, I feel great to be here with you. Equally I do like this site and the way you manage it gives me more pride of being here. Advertising remains something we should not look down. It helps many and in various ways. Many hugs to all of you here. Keep up this great work!
