Fleeting Youth

In the dark when the day has gone.
Resting there before a new dawn.

Sleep comes hard as a diamond’s sharp point.
When there is pain down deep in my joints.

I will always wonder how sweet it could be.
To live a life that is pain free.

I remember the days when I was young.
And winter’s deep cold was something about which I sung.

I miss the days when a falling curtain of white.
Would cause a snow day that made my heart light.

Now when it comes all that I foresee.
Is a long drive to work for adults like me.

So savor your youth before it is gone.
For it will not be around for long.

When it has passed as quick as can be.
Older and tired is all I will be.

Packing

You flutter about like a bird in flight.
Grabbing things like a thief in the night.
Shirts and pants flying about, what a sight.
When you grabbed the shoes from the floor you gave the dog a fright.
The suitcase on the bed used to be so light.
But now lifting it takes all of your might.
So determined that everything fit just right.
It’s funny to watch you pack tonight.

Never Saw It Coming

You walk into the room so smug.
I happened to have it in my hand.
And in my heart I felt a tug.
So I began to form a plan.

Like someone who would kick sand.
It may make me look like a thug.
But I knew just where it would land.
Right smack in the middle of your mug.

My aim I knew was straight and true.
A perfect shot,
I knew that you would rue.
I wanted to do it a lot.

You never even saw it coming,
The blow from the pillow was quite stunning.

Sleepy Girl

Late in the night as I watch you sleep,
I wonder what dreams in your head do you see.
I know if I ask your silence you’ll keep,
But I can’t help but wonder, what could they be?

I hope for the best,
Dreams of god fortunes to come.
Or maybe a test,
Successfully done.

Nothing but angels and rainbows for you,
And sweet treats or happiness everywhere you look.
But I know sometimes bad dreams are waiting for you.
Or dreams about things you read in a book.

As I look down I see innocence there,
And a carefree expression,
Only sleep can put there.
For a moment we can share that expression.

When you have a bad dream for now I will be there.
A strong, safe presence to sooth your despair.
But soon you’ll grow up and a gown you will wear,
And I’ll know that bond with someone else you will share.

When that day comes I will cry just a bit,
And sit in your old room by myself for a while.
I’ll look at the bed with a worn down pit,
And the stuffed bears you left lying in a pile.

Slowly I’ll stand and walk out of the door,
Stop in the hall, and turn to look a little more.
There in the middle of the floor,
Is the spot where I stood and listened to you snore.

But for now you’re still here and a little girl,
You still need your daddy for just a bit more.
So I’ll leave you to sleep, my little pearl.
As silently I close your door.

Good Night.

The Darkness Inside

Deep inside, the darkness always hides,
Way down deep,
I fear it will always reside, most times it is denied,
But it I will keep.

Vast as an ocean yet black and bleak.
You ask me what is wrong.
But of this I will not speak.
For if I did the talk would be too long.

You may never see just how sad I can be.
You will never know just how low I can go.
You think you see the heart of me,
But my tears seldom flow.

Those times that you go,
I start feeling real low.
Why couldn’t you stay,
Or else take me away.

I didn’t see hope,
Just a slippery slope.
At the end of my rope,
I could hardly cope.

Though I knew you’d return.
For your presence I yearn.
You would think I would learn,
What perseverance would earn.

I saw you today,
As if from far away.
But my darkness I still hide,
Forever to reside.

Circling Back

Finding myself writing one day,
I had something curious to say.
Because what I had done,
Was done quite for fun.
I felt that I needed to play.

So as I am often so drab,
And never accused of being a cad.
I set out to find,
Someone who wouldn’t mind.
Hanging out with me just a tad.

Driving fast out of town on gravel roads,
Watching out for some very large toads.
We followed the sun,
From the cops we did run.
And oh how we did laugh loads.

Hours after the sun had set,
We stopped at a bar and our whistles we wet.
Then we started back,
Intending to hit the sack.
On the cops giving up we had bet.

Doing ninety we saw a deer with a big rack,
And when we hit quite a punch it did pack.
Sadly some cops had just seen,
Our car that was lime green.
And they decided to circle back.

Together, Separately

We travel through this world together, walking hand in hand.
Stepping into a crowded room, as one we promised to stand.
You and I try to act as one, as all our friends can see.
As we walk into the room we see someone that we both know,
He’s come to see me, and acknowledge you as well.
As we stand and talk it becomes quite clear, that this conversation was meant for only two.
So I just stop and stand politely, not knowing what else to do.
You have your talk, while I just wait, and contemplate the view.
The night goes on and so it seems that though we are together,
The conversations that we share are narrower and narrower.
Focused on me or focused on you not how we are together.
When dinner comes we sit side by side.
Close enough to touch, but pulled in opposite ways.
As young adults we only had eyes for each other, I miss those days.
When you gave your all to me, and I did the same for you.
All our conversations were for just us, and maybe others too.
But it was mainly for just me and you.
Now it’s time to go so we say goodbye to as all conversations are through.
It’s time for one to come from two,
As a pair is made from me and you.
I am just a little sad that we were here together, but separated we drew.
Hopefully next time we will not be there together, separately.

Break Time

The fall semester is now the past,
And Christmas break has come at last.
This little time will fly so fast,
Leaving students all aghast.

Alone

Walking through the world away from home.
I wondered how this time had come.

I look around and all that I see
Is that everyone is different from me.

It wasn’t like this before I came here.
But I noticed it as I got near.

Back home the people looked like a rainbow.
So I never noticed we were elbow to elbow.

Now I look around and what do I see?
No one here knows what to make of me.

My hair is different than everyone here.
But it is just like those I hold dear.

Those I work with barely notice me at all.
So I keep my head down and say nothing at all.

I walk through this room,
Carrying a rag or a broom.

I say nothing at all to those around me,
And feel that those around pretend not to see.

I walk through this world and feel that this isn’t right.
Walking through the world alone in a sea of white.

Setting Sun

Band of fire,
Burning low,
Chasing daylight,
Evenings glow,
Always chasing,
Never catching,
Close behind,
Never in front,
Twilight comes.
