Alone
Walking through the world away from home.
I wondered how this time had come.
I look around and all that I see
Is that everyone is different from me.
It wasn’t like this before I came here.
But I noticed it as I got near.
Back home the people looked like a rainbow.
So I never noticed we were elbow to elbow.
Now I look around and what do I see?
No one here knows what to make of me.
My hair is different than everyone here.
But it is just like those I hold dear.
Those I work with barely notice me at all.
So I keep my head down and say nothing at all.
I walk through this room,
Carrying a rag or a broom.
I say nothing at all to those around me,
And feel that those around pretend not to see.
I walk through this world and feel that this isn’t right.
Walking through the world alone in a sea of white.
