The Vacation

Ocean waves lapped leisurely at the shore
Rolling in and tickling the pebbled sands
Laughing children squealed happily for more
Splashing each other with their feet and hands

Circling seagulls soared lazily above
On trade winds seemingly close to the sun
Parents gazed upon their children with much love
Joining them in their gleeful summer fun

They built sand castles - a total of three
This trip was definitely - they agreed
The best holiday for their family
It fulfilled for them all, their every need

They’ll come back again they already planned
To bask in God’s glory – this serene land

The Proposal

I gaze upon your beauteous face
Hair soft and fair, like delicate lace

Heartened by your most beguiling glance
Emboldened during this sensual dance

I guide you onto the balcony
Away from the loud cacophony

I reach my hand ‘round your slender waist
Clumsily grabbing air in my haste

Drawing you near, both our breaths mingling
In moments I feel my loins tingling

Your charms surpass those of all women
I find myself totally smitten

Whispering my name with crimson lips
You let your hand slide over my hips

I tilt your chin to my loving stare
Then kiss your lips by my own dare

We both unleash unbridled passion
Parting lips in similar fashion

I want you now and forever more
To cherish, love and always adore

Say yes my dear and accept this ring
And see what joy our marriage will bring

When We Fight

When We Fight

Darkness, depression, deepest despair
My heart sinks into the abyss
This conflict with you seems so unfair
Your loving touch I sorely miss
There’s naught to blame when things go awry
We came from different walks of life
Our love continues to make us try
One day I will become your wife
Knowing each other is taking long
Uncovering our mystic thoughts
At times we get our messages wrong
But we still love each other lots

The Land Lord

Sam rose at dawn though there was no need
He owned the plantation now, with land
His dead father willed it with the deed
And Sam ran it with a heavy hand

The cotton could be seen for miles ‘round
Sturdy, healthy plants yielded much wealth
From dawn til dusk the slaves could be found
Toiling so hard with risk to their health

Like bees in a hive making honey
They stooped and picked to give him his life
A style that required lots of money
Freedom from work and financial strife

But at what price? He did now ponder
The slaves were dying at alarming rate
From heat, disease, so he would wonder
Abolition was the new debate

The slaves they said deserved to be free
From picking white gold for lords of land
And never live the life of a bee
Slavery seemed to them out of hand

Power and greed had made Sam so cold
He’d bought, sold and driven those poor slaves
To unfair deaths with stories untold
He could not justify all those graves

Sam was born it seemed, to just languish
With his money, he thought life was won
But now he understood their anguish
Men and women slaving in the sun

He’d beaten some, he admitted now
His father had done so too with glee
The sweat of guilt was upon his brow
Sam would sleep tonight then set them free

For the slaves were just people like him
And they deserved a much better life
Freedom from the pain and the lords’ whim
Chance for man to grow old with his wife

Those who stayed on would be treated fair
Sam knew he could right all he’d done wrong
Given time, he’d make them all aware
That free here with him was where they belong

Ancient Aliens

The ancient aliens came to earth
They came in droves for what it was worth
Silver saucers spinning through the blue
Aliens landed with much ado
Revered as Gods they helped us all out
Most scared at first, we did scream and shout
They were small and grey with bulging eyes
Despite their strange looks they were nice guys
They built pyramids lickety split
That Mayan calendar was a hit
They brought us frogs and slithery snakes
I wish they hadn’t for heaven’s sakes!
Showing us how to plant crops was great
Sharing was a kind alien trait
Soon they left and zoomed off past the moon
Promising to come back again soon
We eagerly await their return
There are many more things we can learn

Mademoiselle Papillon

Flittering along with gossamer wings
She espied the lemony yellow rose
Alighting gently, her place to repose
Quietly, her thoughts vague whispery things

She’d flown from up north where the cold wind stings
Now basking in the sun’s glows
Plants and shrubs in haphazardly strewn rows
Resting, listening to natural things

Searching miles for her nurturing milkweed
Living to lay eggs, her purpose in life
Never stopping to question reasons why

Performing her duty, her inner need
Accomplishing with little or no strife
The short but sweet life of this (Monarch) butterfly

The Widow's Walk

The frothy waves lapped hungrily at the shore
Polishing the rough rocks smooth, licking the sand
The cool northeast winds were picking up briskly
Blowing clouds of ominous pitch to the land

The woman sat trying to steady her mare
Her nostrils flared as the sea spray pelted her
They both could sense the impending thunderstorm
She guided her back with a kick of a spur

As she neared the stable thunder clapped loudly
Her mare whinnied in protest to the fright
The woman then ran home and raced up the stairs
To poise herself on the small porch for the night

Her man was the captain of the ship “Misty”
He was due to reach port the following day
She could spy the lighthouse near the shore below
There to ensure her man did not lose his way

For the sea could be cruel and kill those who dare
To challenge her fury and think that their ship
Can navigate through the wildest of waters
With no fear of death during their ocean trip

She stood on the balcony, wind gusting strong
But felt comfort from seeing the beacon of light
That would guide her man through the treacherous rocks
In the darkness, she prayed he would be all right

Renewal

He marveled at the beauty in his wake
The fiery sun settling down for the night
Reflecting off of the sparkling glass lake
Like rainbows dancing wildly in the light

He basked in the harmony of this place
The loon’s call resonating in the air
A world bestowed upon us by God’s grace
Nature’s realm like an answer to his prayer

For it brings healing and peace from above
When his life burdens dampen his spirit
Pure land and air gives rise to renewed love
And faith in God to carry him through it

He rose from his spot on the grassy hill
His fractured soul had now become hopeful
Walking calmly away he felt the thrill
Of connecting with God and being thankful

Summer Day

Clouds puffy white teddy bears drifting above
Colliding then separating, dancing it seemed
The sun tired now, sinking into the horizon
But not before sharing its glorious hues
Fiery red, goldenrod yellow, streaked with azure
Like the most vibrant of rainbows
Her children sat on the beach patting turrets onto sand castles
Pebbles in pails of water, glistening in the wet
Black, rust, and pink granite
Souvenirs of a hot happy summer day

My Summer

Laughter, splashing
Lake sparkling in the bright light
Hosing off sandy feet
Beach towels drying on the line
Smelling of sunshine
Dragonflies lazily hovering in the garden
Flip flops slapping against my heels
Ice cream dribbling down my chin
Lush raspberries ready for picking
Air perfumed with the scent of wild roses
My summer
My joy
