Useless Things

These scars cover your body,
It’s what you have become
you can’t help myself,
you just won’t work.

The pills are useless
The cuts hurt
They do nothing for me
Nothing brings you joy
Is this the way it has to be?

I've not been there
I don’t know how you feel
It’s attacked your body, it controls your life
Like stabbing your mind with a fatal knife

It controls you
And I feel useless.
With no aim in life and no feelings to consider
It brings you pain
It brings me heartache
you can’t help myself
Is this what you have become?

Papa's Poem

Where are you?
I can’t find you, I cant see you.
I call out your name and come to find you.

I want to find you in the shed,
making Linda’s sledge.
Whistling to yourself as you go along.
I want to find you in Hemsby,
Giving Lois coca cola and a mars bar for breakfast
Here is 50p to buy an ice cream you’d say
So make sure you spend a little, save a little,
You would remind the grandchildren while going up the Dunes from the bungalow.
I want to find you in Great Yarmouth with Nana,
Where the town never sleeps with the blue china dog.
I want to find you driving your Hillman Minx along Old Bedford Road taking the great
grandchildren to the park for us to play on the red train and have an ice cream.
I want to find you in the flat listening to Nessum Dorma
Giving Julia and Jeremy a rough house
I want to find you in the Blackswan’s Garden
After being to Papa Chamberlaine’s allotment on a Sunday.
I want to find you doing you charity work sitting upstairs in McDonalds.
I want to find you at Diane and Grahame’s for your joint birthday with Julia.
With you being head of the family, watching everyone stop and talk,
Occasionally having a snooze but still having time to love them for them.
I want to find you one last time
reminding us not to forget the great from Great Yarmouth
Or “When I was in the war...”
But I still can’t find you.

Then I realise I have found you
You are still here.
You’re hiding well but we know you are around.
We can’t see you but we can feel you always
So when we say you are not around anymore –
You are – in our hearts, head and our memories.

We miss you...

You Know Everything

You know everything about us, but what do we know about you?
You might glimpse in the glimmer of the moonlight, or a fall of dappled light.
You might hear in the rustle of a leaf, and a whisper of a breeze,
But what language do you speak, if you speak at all?
You are a God who lives to raise the ones, who fall,
And if you wrote the script then why all the trouble makers?

How does it feel to be so high?
To feel the softness of the clouds-the innocence of the world.
Do you ever cry? Are you ever happy?
And how do you feel our pain by walking in our shoes?

Do you send the happiness and love we crave so much?
Like the pure white dove flying over the trees
Rustling in the leaves, gazing down at its lower world
Have you ever felt starved? Ever felt full?
Filled with the love of the world
How do you decide our fates, if they are wrapped around your finger?
And if you wrote the script then why all the trouble makers?

You blow like the wind,
You shine like the stars,
You are forever there
When we are done, done with life
And you raise us up, to be one, to be part of you
For you to be part of me.

So tell me now, tell me now
Why am I so far away and you’re so close?
When you’re high, how can you be close?
Changing sadness to joy, fears to hopes, and dreams to plans.
Have I missed my chance, a chance to be whole, with you?
All I wanted to do was dance, dance in the moonlight, and dance to the stars.
Your stars, the ones that you created, the ones that shine as bright as you.

So how does it feel to be so high?
And do you feel happy, do you feel sad?
Do you smile, but sometimes cry, when the ones you love and care for are down?
So when the light slips around the ageless trees and the shadows dance on a whispering
breeze,
Allow us to discover the magic, the magic of knowing you.
And knowing you love the world for who we are.

I Believe

You are constantly there when I don’t want you to be,
You are a part of me, a big part of me
And you stay with me all the time.
You are like a shadow in the darkness of the night.
I try to get rid of you, to help you,
But you don’t want to go; you don’t want to leave me.
I have little hope that you will get better, no hope.

I believe things will not be the same again
I had my whole life planned.
Now it is not in my hands, the dream of crossing the finish line.

I wanted my dreams to become a reality
But you came, and you broke me.
I was not the same again.
I knew I would live to regret it; trying everything, so you didn't have to.
I tried things that I thought would help,
But they didn't.

You stay the way you are; you are still a part of me
My tears didn’t show in the rain- they were cold,
Just like the rain in a storm.
The flowers are all faded now; they are dying, without any hope
The sun is rising, but I can’t see it.

When am I going to get rid of you?
When am I going to get a break? To be separated from you?

You are controlling my life,
I want to live on my own; my own life,
But you are getting in the way.
I can’t do anything without you.

You are like my shadow; constantly attached.
Everything reminds me of you-
Seeing people do what I want to do
To pass that line
The line that tells me that it is all over; that my dream is complete.

There is nothing that I can say to you,
To help you understand what you make me feel,
Even all the pain and tears I cry and still you never say goodbye,

I now know how far you go to get me to notice you,
I do, I do notice you. I notice you all the time.
Do you know what its like with the pain? The aches? The screams?
Or the broken dreams?

 Everything reminds me of you-
Seeing people do what I want to do
To pass that line
The line that tells me that it is all over.

You walked with me, like the footprints from my path
But you didn't make me happy.
What if I got told that this was meant to be, that you were meant to stay?
What then? What would I do? Would I still believe?
I dont want to be searching forever
Just to find the answer.
I think I am dreaming, until I wake
Then you are there again.

I believe I cant wait a lifetime,
Just for you to disappear
But I know that I need to keep what's left,
My hope just like the lonely star in the midnight sky,
The hope of knowing that you won’t be with me forever
And that I will be fine without you...

Your True Reflection

If you look in the mirror,
What do you see?
“I see a friend who could never be anything more
I see a friend who is a star shining bright
Across the ocean in the midnight sky.
I see one who is always there,
Not liking to say goodbye.
One who is braver than a lion itself,
Purer than the pure white dove.

You ask me
“What kind of friend am I?”
I answer you with this;
“You are more than a friend to me-
You are like the wind
Blowing back and forth
You shine the sun,
And sparkle like the stars.
You are the softness of the clouds,
The whisper of a breeze”

You ask me
“Am I worth all this? You deserve better”
I reassure you that you are worth all this.
I want you in my life,
No-one could disagree,
That we are like the moon and the stars,
Or salt and pepper
Like fish and chips.
We stick together like glue – you and me
And you still ask yourself
“Am I worth it?”
I answer with a familiar reply..
I say..

“I couldn’t live my life without you,
Someone who is their selves.
Someone who doesn't make me feel like anyone but me.
So don’t change, don’t go away
Just be you and I will and do love you for that.

Mutual Staring

There you are again,
When I look out of my window,
I see you staring back.
I see your glistening outline flowing through the night,
Shining through the day.
With you standing so near, yet feeling so far.
Being old, you just stand there.
What do you do?

I see you watching me, watching me.
I wonder what you think of others coming and going, running and playing.
Yet not saying a single word.
See, I do nothing but stand here,
My roots firmly stuck in the ground.

There are many of you I can see,
Yet you seem to be alone.
You stand on your own,
Within your green surrounding, your home,
Watching everyone else.
You’re fighting to be part of everything –
Yet your roots won’t allow you.
You are focused, with one aim in life.
Nothing else.

With all your curves I see them.
The leaves rustling around you, floating through each year.
Do you feel them going?
Changing through each season.
You want to go with them, but you can’t.
Yet your roots won’t allow you.

There you are again,
Staring out of that window.
Why do you do that?
What are you looking at?
You look straight at me, seeming like you are looking straight through me.
I don’t eat your food, drink your water, I don’t hurt you,
Yet you continue to look at me like that.
What are you seeing?

I see your whispering branches blowing in the wind,
Looking so fragile as if would break.
I see your mind wandering
As if wanting to move, but cant.
To lift your roots and go.
In your mind you seem so far away,
Yet so close in reality.

I see you more closely now,
Staring up at me.
With me staring back down at you.
You’re staring at me so closely,
With such a glazed expression.
Yet I can’t work out why.
Why, I dont do anything, just stand here?

You move back slowly,
Staring still.
What do you see?
Do you see me? Or just what I look like?
You’re talking to me now,
I don’t understand.
What are you saying?
There’s that look again.
That glazed expression.
Are you still looking at me?
You are.
Yet I can’t work out why...
For I am only a tree.

You Are Constantly There

You are constantly there,
When I don’t want you to be
You are a part of me, a big part of me
And you stay with me all the time
I try to get rid of you, to help you,
But you don’t want to go; you don’t want to leave me.
I have little help that you will get better, no hope.

You break, making me break.
I try everything, so you don’t have to.
I try things that will help,
But they don’t.

You stay the way you are; you are still a part of me
When I am going to get rid of you?
To get a break?
To be separated from you?

You are controlling my life,
I want to live on my own; my own life,
But you are getting in the way.
I can’t do anything without you there.
You are like my shadow,
Constantly attached.

There is nothing that I can say to you,
To make you see,
How I feel about you..
Even all the pain and tears I cry and still you never say goodbye,

I now know how far you go to get me to notice you,
I do, I do notice you. I notice you all the time.

You will be with me forever
But I don’t want you to be.
You’re the one thing that stops me, stops me from living my life.
I want to turn things all around, for them to be different.
You need me, but I don’t need you.
I want to be apart but you keep coming back.
Without you, I can’t breathe,
How can I get you to leave?
Without me, you don’t know what to do,

You will leave me, I want you to.
I need you to; I will be, one day...
Without you..
