Consolation

Consolation

He sits upon your window ledge
his tail a darkish feathered wedge.
His wings are folded in a prayer.
He sits and sees you in your chair
alone and sad and in despair.

Soon he ventures closer, till
his beak's against the window sill.
It seems he feels you praying, so
he bows his head. It seems as though
this tiny bird can feel your sorrow.

But that's not why he's here today;
he's come to take your sad away
so you don't have to feel so blue.
His notes are bright, his tune is true.
With this great gift he comforts you.

Hot Night, Cold Milk

Hot Night, Cold Milk

The night was hot, I couldn't fall asleep
and so I rose to get a glass of milk.
I tiptoed past the cat who slept so sound
and envied her the ease in which she slept.

She woke and followed slippers down the hall.
The milk I poured was for myself, alone.
Her eyes a perfect glow, a begging plead
convinced me that the milk was really hers--
(a half a cup and nothing more for me.)

She lapped and lapped until was satisfied.
And I, a sleepy dupe, hauled off to bed.

Min Pin In Moonlight

There he stands, small--
a shiny black dog silhouette
on striped brown planks
of house deck;
his pearl black eyes
gleaming in moonlight.

He has eaten his fill--
his long stick legs still
supporting his belly
hammock-style.

His cropped sausage tail
points to a constellation--
a gathering of stars
he cannot see due to mist
surrounding the moon.

"Look at me," the moon invites.
"Yes," the Min Pin whines--
then "No," he whimpers.
It's the shiny buck in the field
he seeks as his companion.

White Cat In the Alley

I was relieved to find a white cat
whose eyes have shone yellow and lit
the way I should walk home in the night
to my cold, cold cottage in town.

Whose eyes have shone yellow and lit
as much as the white cat in the alley?
To my cold, cold cottage in town
I depend on every sign and token of luck

as much as the white cat in the alley:
the coin in my boot, my cloak and swagger.
I depend on every sign and token of luck.
All these, plus a green moon, fool-proof as

the coin in my boot, my cloak and swagger.
One never knows what lurks in the shadows--
all these plus a green moon, fool-proof as
a fool with DTs, now a limp not a swagger.

One never knows what lurks in the shadows,
the way I should walk home in the night.
A fool with DTs now, a limp not a swagger,
I was relieved to find a white cat.

Cayucos By the Bay, California

Springtime has her way--
as well, she has her will.
What more is there left to say
on this sea-salt, sultry day.
'Tis hot, the wind is still.

Springtime has her way
on hilltops by the bay--
Cayucos 'neath a flowering hill.
What more is there left to say
of lupines bright and gay--
of hilltop fields they fill.

Springtime has her way
as seashells wash and stay
within the sand. Yet still,
what more is there left to say
on this idyllic day
of sights and sounds, as idyll
springtime has her way.
What more is there left to say.

it is so simple
God told the trees what to do
and they all did it...
innocent of everything--
and thus, guilty of nothing

Rosa Hesperrhodos

rosa hesperrhodos

What if
this rose not bloom,
its soul not bared to you
or me--dies sealed; an unopened
letter.
