One Hundred Thirty-Six Pretty Petals

Inside twinkling eyes of nights bloom
          Garden flowers whisper
Peeking through tree branches, heads nod
         Vines twine graceful arbor crown

              Rows covered with pretty petals
                   Faces of sunflowers
                       Dream of tomorrows honey bee
                          Sleepy yawns of sweet peas

                      Early morning darkness shrouds daisy
                  Happy go lucky petals
Spin cartwheels across the night sky
          Honeysuckle smiles grace fence

Veil of mist twirling through hearth
                 Maiden’s shy smile sleeping
                      Exuberant gaze waiting brightly
                           Bluebell colors swirl

Dew drops dripping off Iris tongues
                      Moon beams warm tulips
Kiss of starlight rejoice each rose
              Pepper nasturtium petal

           Under Hostas' green leaf shelter
        Nestles dainty slippers
           Woven of heaven’s sweet scents
                Garlands adorn the sky

                     Pirouette back down to earth
                         And open the garden gate
                              Dawn’s an hour’s chime away
                                    In mystical days of June

Beware

Beware on Halloween a Witches brew
As into the night her frosty breath grew
            Whispering you to her door
And played you a trick galore
You gave her your candy and off she flew

Senescence

Just having passed another year In quiet celebration I was reflecting on my journey here Feeling still quite young Yet remembering What a friend just had said that we Are now senescence This comment startled me Into thinking of where I am and where I am going next How many good years, are there For me to really enjoy Fifteen is my guess with more That will be an unknown chore So little but so many How does that compare with the first If I act now like I’m fifteen I would love passionately with you Start a new first job Lay around in a bikini in my backyard As the years go back, I would Do less and less Enjoy playing more with make believe Make cookies and eat the dough Have books read to me Swing in a tree for hours, daydreaming Wish upon the moon and stars For a peaceful night Until I just sit in a chair in a sunny spot Stare out the window Nod off to sleep Then nibble on peanut butter Licking my spoon contentedly, still I would want to see you again And dream of my days beside the sea

A Calm Or Tempestuous Life

Rest yourself here where water lies calm
    still, you could fly
to perch on tempestuous cloudy bank
    perhaps to remain
safety a foreign ideal you’ve rarely felt

for you, comfort seems to come with upheaval
still, you could stay
in the quest to find who you might be
perhaps to entrust
that you are enough and worthy too

for I recall where your viridity began
still, life gives trials
People to test next to those to emulate
perhaps you’ll select
where you won’t go or who you can’t be

Without a Doubt

Without a Doubt

I’ve seen your yellow underbelly now
and there’s no denying or going back
a solid moral compass is what you lack
this country torn, breaking bodies bough
with deaths and sorrows piled upon your brow

lying and cheating is what you are about
it’s putting our people into the ground
a civil war is brewing to bring you down
we must fight back with you to end this bout
it’s time to vote for sanity without a doubt

It’s not so hard to do your smallest part
just wear the mask so you and I can pass
would certainly make you less of an ass
and show you have some care kept in your heart
to give your country a bit of a kick start

in sadness and anger I feel ashamed
to watch your racism - hatreds disdain
as white men’s greed carries its ugly stain
I’m glad we’re rising up to stand inflamed
no longer can we heal the wrongs restrained

Looking For Answers

I walk slow Through the forest Alone Inside my mind Where I am looking For answers Sometimes I find them Sometimes I find glue Stuck in thoughts That circle around I step off the pathway Wait A new path opens written: 8-31-2019 Yalto poems only Poetry Contest 1st Place Premium Thank You Emile Invented by Edward Ibeh: line 1 to 15: 3,4,2,4,5,3,2,3,2,3,3,5,6,1,5 syllables Sponsor: Emile Pinet

A Gray Horizon

Seaweed strands woven prettily, unwind
spread tendrils of green sublime
the grace of a fluid dancer dressed up
to perform while the seagull cries
the afternoon curtain call

Incoming or out going, the waves turn
against the tide to ride for free
Recurring rhythms pulse, comfortably
Recline upon their earthly saline chariot
Lost horizon forgives the grey mist

Shrouds worn abandoned over treetops
melts the lines and blurs reality
inside lives the heartbeat, found again
while Autumn begins it's dance
awakens the maiden of trees reflection

Shimmer across time's unseen dimension
carry the colors of a new born moment
disappear into the unknown
the secrets kept are safe in her bosom
of ample forgiveness found in a new season

Dark clouds rise to curl around the sun's tongue
turn to candy colored rocks, strewn about
slippery against the souls of forgotten men
yet found in their beauty of differences
you take one home to light the way

The path becomes one of many parts
written by footprints along the shoreline
inland worries escape to the sea
roll with fate or steady the oars over swells
elements of whispered prayers

Floating languid white bubbles
waiting for the mermaids kiss of fairytales
buried beneath layers of childhood
beliefs that crystallized in glided goblets
then touched gingerly for substance

Carry me to the top of the gray horizon
to sail as I will with confidence
a funeral flower will float for the heavens
and give itself in your honor
the sea asked for nothing in return

Left Behind Swagger

She swaggers over to our table
Whips out her pad from her apron
Pencil poised
What’cha want Hon?
She drawls
Soft pink lips in a little twinkled pout
The white frilled design
Bust’n out in all the boxum places
Our “Two Specials with coffee” reply
Brought a smile
I like it fast and easy like that
she laughs
as she saches her swagger back
to place our order
you can’t help but notice that
her perfume lingers
in still air
as if the shadow of her swagger
was left behind

Who's In Control Up There

Today, a screech from a hawk reminded me Of being in a car wreck years ago, like The synapse door to my remembrance room opened And the memory came down the conveyor belt Into the window of my mind to arrive unannounced Who’s in control up there? Some little sprite? Why can’t it work as smooth when I lose my keys? The memory room operator could use some training Written: 7-16-2019 Mini Verse Poetry Contest 2nd Place Sponsor: Nina Parmenter

Ode To the Sisters

Oh, you goddesses ~ pretty Pleiades of stars
Shinning above in distant blue merriment's glee
Sisters adorn the sky as nightly jewels of ours
To grace the Titan Atlas ~ his daughters carefree

Stunning as their mother Pleione ~ gathered still
We look upon their light with hearts of divine thrill

Alas, the God of hunt ~ the giant Orion
In love he fell, with sisters all, upon their meet
Pursued them daily like a mountain lion
Till Zeus did change his girls to doves ~ they fly so sweet

To sky up high they went to be a part of Bull
You see but six as one became a comet, full

We celebrate the story of their beauty fair
When dance and song and poetry expressed our loves
To keep our daughters safe from Gods, we do beware
Or see them fly from you like early morning doves

Rejoice each night when seen their joyous glitter smiles
Together they are ~ our sisters in all our trials
