Midnight Typhoon

Spring tide
pounding against
a rocky relationship

between the
new moon and
earth’s pie in the sky.

On an island
of one’s own making
in the mind —

like a whirlpool
when imagination
slips away

on a one-way
ticket to disaster —
no peace to find.

Stonewalling
rest with stress
and anxiety.

No sleep
on a tidal bore
without soporifics

in a
midnight typhoon
pawning fantasy.

Windwalker

I
knew a Tiger
who swam with dolphins
along the razor’s edge

and
meditated with a yellow bird
under his honey’s tree
in a west coast garden.

A
rare breed
from an indigenous
creed.

His
poetic wisdom
written with
zen.

He
sung his songs
in syllables:
5-7-5 and 5-7-5-7-7.

His
beloved’s last kiss
left him fragrant roses
when she crossed over.

Where
did our
Windwalker
go?

Lava
beads, sky lanterns,
and a beautiful
rainbow.

Is
he crying with Coyotes
to the moon or on
heaven’s Windswept Shore?

I
knew a Tiger
who walked
with the wind.

Competition With Myself

I am in competition
with no one
with the exception of
myself.

Sometimes I think
life would be easier
if I were
dumb.

Maybe
if I were ugly
people would be
nice.

I
wish people
could see my
heart.

Perhaps
they might
actually like
me.

Torn Seams

Carrying the weight of loss...

After all these years,
I still have unanswered questions
ripping me apart.

Trying to repair
an unraveling life.

I don’t know how
to sew, not like you.

Needle in the eye,
tears in my pocket.

Stitches rubbing together
break me in two
and I don’t know
what to do.

Turning myself
inside out over
losing you.

Time cannot heal torn seams.

Indescribable

I’m going to write
the unfathomable
so that when you
try to figure out
the unimaginable
you won’t have a clue
who I really am
because no one else
can fit in my shoes.

Repentance

I lie awake
while he snores to the saints
                    at four a.m.
maybe I need to repent
      some kind of sin

            — tanka

Peach

I am a watermelon
with no meter or rind.

Counting syllables
like one, two, three...

Some beats make me sweet.
Some rhythms make me salty.

Four, three, two...

Some poets prefer
a non-rhyming peach
whose lines taste better than mine.

One, two, three…

Please don’t cry.

Four, three, two…

I’m still here
and I hope you’re
doing just fine.

A real Peach
never says goodbye.

Love Forevermore

I begged God
for someone like you.

I was worried
and so weary.

In so much pain.
I tried to hide it away.

I wanted to die.
I didn’t think I could go on.

I needed a solution.
I needed a breakthrough.
I needed relief.
I needed a miracle.

He sent you to me.

Your heart is home.
I rest easy in knowing
that I am loved.

You have my love
forevermore.

Nobody Knows

Rancid tomato
decaying slowly.

Every ounce of me
pressed out.

Throbbing head and
aching bones.

My body crushed
under expectation.

Not knowing how long
life will sustain.

Ruptured wounds
slowly decompose.

Losing color from
my veins.

Nobody notices while
I’m bleeding out.

Everyone discards
rotten tomatoes.
