Finding Peace, Or the Obituary

Some find peace
on a summer's day,
in whispering leaves
as branches sway.

Some find peace
in lover's arms,
feeling they are
safe from harm.

Some find peace
in children's song,
whose youth does not
yet know of wrong.

Some find peace
in their own silence,
feeling there's no
need for violence.

My days are done,
I've no more pain,
and I find peace
in the rain.

Fear

fear is a void,
open, hungry,
waiting to devour
whatever it can

fear is a shadow
walking behind,
stealing the light
and warmth of life

fear is deathless,
nameless, faceless,
existing beyond
time and reason

fear is nothing,
yet touches everything,
drinking joy and
spitting out poison

All Hallow's Eve

water dripping from the eaves
promise in the whispering leaves
cold lights dancing in the night
spirits cast in ghastly light

Across the Prairie

Winds blow, soft, insistent
knotting my hair, tugging my clothes
begging me to run, swift
and surefooted as the antelope.

Rain falls, tumbling down the
hillside, filling the creek
until its swollen currents roar
by, banks overflowing.

Feet pound the earth, blindly
seeking solid footing, pushing
past the pain, pressing on
until the body is worn.

Scents of sage, wet earth,
and stone fill my lungs
as my chest heaves, smelling
of things both old and new.

Wind blows, rain falls,
water roars, heart pounds;
amid the voices of nature,
my mind is at peace.

Silent Mystery

dark house sitting on a hill,
pine trees whisper,
all is still,
shadows creep across the lawn,
absorbing sound
as silence swallows up the dawn

I Sent My Wish On Fairy Wings

I sent my wish on fairy wings
Dashing through the night
It streaked across the moonlit sky
Its wake a trail of light

I sent my wish on fairy wings
To dance on summer's breeze
Flitting through the dewy vines
Caught in tall pine trees

I sent my wish on fairy wings
My face as pale as death
A whispered hope for peaceful rest
Delivered with last breath

Stalking Shadows

For my Dads, one dearly departed and one a lover of horror.

We often fear the shadows,
But somehow always seek
Those things which are the darkest,
And the secrets others keep.

We watch for what we fear,
And hope to catch the shadows
As they slowly creep about
Looking in the windows.

If the Earth Could Sing

In spring time
Grasses whisper,
Hushed voices murmur
As I walk by.
And when the wind blows
I can hear the earth sing
Songs of the ages gone.

They sing songs
Of wind and rain,
And a time when the
World was new.
When the wind blew across
The open plain, and
Buffalo roamed wild and free.

Songs which tell
Of the birth of men,
Before they did
Conquer the earth.
Before they did take the lives
Of millions, and watered
The earth with blood and tears.

The earth long ago
Grew weary of the
Doings of men.
A day may come when the
World returns to the way it once was,
And our cities return to forest,
Remembered only in song.

Remembrance

Write a song for warriors fallen,
Whose final words rang in battles heat;
Bodies strewn across the field,
Trampled neath the victors feet.

Write a song for lovers buried,
Joyful hearts stopped far too soon;
Who were laid to rest in wooded glades
Neath the light of a waning moon.

Write a song for souls who wander,
Seeking joy and peace of mind;
Pray that you'll not join their numbers,
That your fates be not entwined.
