Rosemary Bryerton-Schiff Poem
he wanted to
tweak my ashes
just so
i laughed cause
i couldn’t even
do that
i don’t think that
he really knew
how old they were
so anyway
i gave in and let
him try
he gathered them
gently
smoothed them out
found some thorns
old heart breaks
i thought i forgot
he sifted through
the worry
that hurt my shoulders
the dirty parts
the shame
he didn’t seem to mind
he let them run
through his fingers
and gathered them up again
he decided to mix
them with his
then we drifted down
our sea
and the waves
washed us
clean

Rosemary Bryerton-Schiff Poem
write me a poem
one that caresses
my face
opening the portal
that only you
found
one that warms
my bones
and makes me forget
bonfires
iron hot
the steam rising
from the pages
whispered in my ear
the warmth
that is you
carving it’s canyon
from sunset
to the sunrise
of my soul

Rosemary Bryerton-Schiff Poem
found
and so i told him
you better find something
to love
and grab ahold of
something that means
the world to you
something that
when you’re breathing
and doing it
you feel completely whole
eternally in love
no doubt comes in or out
and you’re there
not just anywhere
but there
doesn’t matter what it is
but you better make sure that thing
becomes yours
and it probably shouldn’t have
any type of legs
or a heart
cause those leave baby
those leave
that’s why words are good
and pure
they flow in and out like breath
and even breath will leave
but words
words
last forever

Rosemary Bryerton-Schiff Poem
break
then we could
meet at the
lighthouse
and i’d let you
have your
way
my neck
while the waves
break
my arms
while the ocean
turns black
under the
crescent moon
my lips
while the soft coral
sways
then what remains
as you work
your way
down the depths
and currents
collide
we’ll teach the waves
all at the lighthouse
where I’d let you
have your way

Rosemary Bryerton-Schiff Poem
i could use
some wood
right now to
whittle and
carve
a rugged, slow
carve
one i know well
one you taught me
a couple springs ago
we were carving away
at lust
at seduction
which led
to love
we both thought
of stopping
and stared at the
mess we made
of each other
you looked bad
said i carved into
something no one
else ever
found
but i looked
far worse
most of me was carved
away
you went down to dust
i think you
liked it though
you said it reminded you
of sand
of wind
of nothingness
of freedom
and
of running
away

Rosemary Bryerton-Schiff Poem
and with him I dream
of water
and all that is crystal
he teaches me to
trust the bridges
the little fractures
carved in
with him
we waste time looking
for sand rubies
and trash castles
that seem sturdy
he teaches me how to
kiss my wishes away
and shows me the forever
blank canvas of
perfection

Rosemary Bryerton-Schiff Poem
was it always
your vision
to break apart
the flower beds
to tear
the roots
out of everything
you knew
how deep
they were
but within
your hands
the melt
began
till you found
the deepest root
of all
it was then
i hid it
after you held it awhile
and decided it wasn’t
for you

Rosemary Bryerton-Schiff Poem
i wasn’t always
like this
my flesh burned
my desire for you
you with hands
that covered mine
melting me
my hard swallow
of what
i could never have
i remember
the last glance
flames you denied
instead threw on me
you turned cold
out of survival
out of guilt for
other’s sins
you numb
safe with your numbers
hanging on a net
well above the flames
our flames
like i said
i wasn’t always
like this
my flesh scarred
my embers of you

Rosemary Bryerton-Schiff Poem
you see
i liked the way
he saw me
pure bone
no lies
he saw the dust
already forming
knew exactly where i’d go
and he loved me
my blood
my black
my pure white
stained in sin
he saw all my flowers
and imagined the
fading
my leaves crumbling
within his fingers
we’d tumble down
the highway
the crisp faded leaves
chasing each other
just out of reach
and other’s hands
and hearts
interfering
cutting love’s
truth with their
axes and demands
but he loved me
with a purity
and with his gaze
she’ll never, ever
know

Rosemary Bryerton-Schiff Poem
weren't we
what life was
meant to be
we played out the little parts
we saw by heart
i even wore my hair
the same way
and wore shoes
with nails through
my feet
i wanted gardens
bigger than me
and thought that
blisters only happened
to others
funny all the tricks
that get played on you
we took it to forever
way too far
to fire
to ice
maybe to the sea
endless bitterness
on the other side of promises
and broken locks
with rusty keys
finding you
finding me
and then i wanted nothing more
