blue-eyed baboon’s billy goat buster
causing confusion, consternation and crying
distressing and disturbing deliberate donkey

Premium MemberCountry Road Food Chain

Yowling and howling late at night
Meeting of cats by the bright moonlight
Wild yipping and one long scream
Coyotes cornered something by a stream

It might be a cat, it’s a sacrifice
Excited yipping announcing it is nice
The food chain is alive down my country road
A long black rat snake just ate a toad

Premium Memberthe yipping dog bark

I hear a barking dog in the distance tonight
Not a desperate bark or a warning bark
One of those weird I-am-bored-with-life-barks
Neither of my own dogs respond
They also have no use for small constant yipping dogs

Premium Membera soundless morning

Placid stillness
It is practically soundless
Two tiny wind chimes sing
Woods and trees are silent
Dogs take off with their tails high up
Hearing something I do not hear
They are yipping like coyotes now
I expect to see deer, but see nothing

amazingly brilliant clandestine divas
effectively foretold general hilarity
ignoring jealous kings
letting melodious nightingales
offer preconceived quality rhythms
soothing treacherous undercover vermin
wildly exasperating yipping zealots

Premium MemberI step into the Newness of the Night

I step into the newness of the night
feeling sticky in the warm air
It is twenty degrees cooler now
Still warm at eighty degrees
But this is Kansas in August

a streak across the sky grabs my attention
blinking red and yellow lights, a commercial flight
we are fifteen minutes south of a large airport
wolves or coyotes are howling in the distance
excited yipping commences, they have cornered something

the yipping seems to have ceased, they must be eating
the night’s freshness taunts me
this is an opportunity to write something new
but what? I sit in a lawn chair, surrounded by my dogs
where to begin? I pick up my pen, waiting for my muse.

The Sunlight was Playing

The talkers were talking,
texting.
Walkers were walking,
skipping, jogging.
Strollers were shaking,
prams rocking.
Kids were shouting,
yipping, yelling.

The pond went roundly around
a circling ground of sound,
shorts on bicycles
were lazily wheeling.
Girls were sky-larking,

He sat under the sun,
a drowsily winking sun,
eyelids heavy and closing.
lashes flickering, tickling.

Sunlight was playing,
Shape-shifting his thoughts,
images
that turned around and around
the ring-a-round pond,
while he slowly melted
into a sleepy smile,
over there somewhere,
where no one looked to see.

To My First Dog

Long asleep in your unknown grave,
My companion, loyal and beloved
Throughout my youth’s growing years,
You cannot know nor now see
How you do still bring tears to me
 With memories haunting
Of the ways our friendship yet remains.

Asleep so still…
With fury has over a half-century passed
Since daddy took me to choose you
From a wriggling, yipping litter of
Nine-week-old, black and tan, mutt pups
On a straw-strewn wooden platform set
Against a pet store’s window…All of you
Squirming and…begging
For a child about age nine — like me —
To come pointing, excitedly…begging,
“That one!”

As our black eyes met
      — yours directly melting into mine —
Glinting great hopes…
(Remember? )

Now even there ~
In heaven’s waiting while dreaming,
In your halcyon grave’s space ,
You cannot know nor wonder
    How love survives still
Holding onto smiles past the tears that grief brings
For a long and deep heart’s treasuring.

Animal Babies

All the baby chicks
From their shells do spring
I’ve seen so many pics
A smile they do bring

Then there are the pups
Wagging little tails
Slurps from puppy cups
Yipping little wails

Premium MemberMama Wolf

She sat on the edge of the cliff watching her wolf pups
They were howling and growling and rolling in their cups
She needed a break, was high enough they could not reach her
She loved them all of course, but she needed a break for sure.

They were yipping and rolling and jumping and playing ball.
They are fun of course. Mother Wolf was proud of them all.
Daddy Wolf came by and asked Mother what was for lunch.
She rolled her eyes, not caring, too busy with this bunch.

So he wandered off, and howled a bit, trying for a moon.
She was irritated. She knew she’d have to get food ready soon.
The pups were howling and yowling and getting closer now.
She loved them all totally, her pups were a big giant wow!

Premium MemberSpring Break Up

It is an impressive break up.
The maestro conducts a symphony that
crushes eardrums with locomotive rumbling,
thumping, bumping, and dumping
of large chunks of cracking, crackling
crystalline ice pushing down river.

Hundreds of tons of ice come together –
		hopefully without devastation.

It is an environment of change.
In soto voce, soft rippling rivulets,
icicles dribbling, dripping droplets,
the slushing of crusted, melting snow.
Snowshoe hares, squirrels, and wolverine
emerge into full Spring activity.

Mush dogs’ serenades ride the winds,
		yipping and campaigning for dinner.

Time to secure Winter’s store of firewood,
move boats and fish wheels to higher ground.
Time to hunt and gather fresh food for stores.
Time to begin restocking fresh meats of
muskrat, beaver, duck, goose, and swan.
Time to rebuild and repair.

	Break up –
one of the best times of the year.

Premium MemberAwesome Breeze To Zephyr

an awesome
benevolent blowy breeze
cleverly concealed, contrived
dastardly deeds of destruction
expressing excitement and enthusiasm
for faithful forever forest firs
giving giant gusts gorgeous guesses
however hardy hemlock heralded heavy happiness
independently indulged, indigenous illuminations illustrated
juxtaposed joyous jumping jiggly junipers
kibitzing killer kleptomaniacal kittens
lounging luxuriously as lemon laughing laborers lollygagged
making monstrously melodic memory music
nebulously needing neverland’s notorious Neptune
Ostentatiously ogling oleander’s offending odors
Promoting promenading, prick preening pines
Quashing quarrelsome Quixotic quails quickly
Reaching Red Oaks’ rhyming rhythm
Securing sassy sexy, sensual sequoia’s secrets
Tantalizing teasing talk toward trees’ temperatures
Understanding unspoken underlying Unitarian underlays
Vexing various variegated veins
Washing wonderful walnuts’ wanderlust
‘xacting ‘xasperating ‘xcitement
young, youthful, yipping
zephyr!

Premium MemberExcited Happy Coyote Yips

Excited happy coyote yips! Howling.
Yips come faster now.
They have something cornered.
Rabbit? Turkey? Chicken? Cat?
A yipping frenzy.
Dinner begins shrieking
