A mother sat and watched her daughter playing
with the other girls, whose parents had also come to watch
the performance. They gathered in clumps, chatting brightly,
awaiting the start. The girls jostled each other,
giggled, and high-fived.

Morganna was the quintessential beautician for sure
every bride wanted her on their wedding day
she was booked in advance, her motives were pure
the trick is to make their updo a bit messy, a fly away
the other beauticians did not know what she meant
She showed them how to do wedding day hair
They did not work on brides, worked on Lee and Kent
happy to not be involved in bridal jittery feelings that flair
Colorful cookies, black devil’s food cake,
hot apple cider and cool caramel crunchies.
Carrot straws and more goodies to bake,
a yummy table set with Halloween munchies.
Bring out the brownies and round soulcake,
toffee apples, moon pies, and mixed nuts.
Scatter spaghetti brains on eyeballs fake.
Serve honey nut toes in green gelatin guts.
Tiny, evil faces on purple boiled eggs.
orange cotton candy for banshee updo.
Break out the cups for slurpee kegs.
Time to drink wicked witches brew.
Marshmallow bodies and pretzel stick bones.
Skeletons covered in ghoulish green gore.
Sharp squeaky cheese sounds eerie tones.
Eat till you’re full, then eat some more.

Sandy's gold and loose hair,
flowed down her bare back as snow.
Waves kiss others as they crash into the air.
Golden glitter heavenly charm glow.
Clouds are piled up alike a thousand black kites,
Lighting is blazing and emits intense light.
Wind barks the same as dogs seeking their moonlit lord,
Steel seas pound my frail wooden ship's cord.
Gooey alike toddler toffee-fingered palm
She tried to scrape it into a chignon farm,
stray from the ballerina's graceful updo.
They snuck away with their dogs via active dough.
Her eyes were shining alike a thousand diamonds,
only in my fantasies and distant islands.
One time, I had an incredibly affectionate heart.
It is torn, the seams burst, and explodes the dart.

I pull an encyclopedia on my lap and a brownie jumps out.
He is naked as a blue jay, and he wiggles his things all about.
I am horrified, and yet delighted, weird to feel both emotions together.
He tips his head and laughs and asks me what time is the weather.
What time is the weather? What language is he speaking to me?
What time is the weather? I turn to my kitten Sweet Pea.
What time is the weather? Does this make any sense to you?
The weather is refrigerator pink she replies in no way an updo.
It’s National Hair Day - raise a comb!
Shake your tresses - write a poem!
Whether blonde, brunette or red,
Let’s celebrate what’s on your head.
Curly, wavy, frizzy, straight,
Pigtails or a single plait,
Buzz cut, Mohawk, updo, ‘fro,
Messy or arranged just so.
How we look, what gives us flair
Depends, in part, upon our hair.
No matter what your style is called
It’s yours to flaunt - unless you’re bald!
Thank you for your input. I appreciate the time you have spent.
Trying to fix me, to mold me, to make me better.
Some of your suggestions are wonderful.
I shall consider them, pondering them over and over.
I will throw them into the air and toss them around with my feet.
Some will stick on the ceiling where they will stay forever.
Others will land on my head.
I will comb them into my updo and parade them around town.
I will show the world how helpful you have been.
People will write you thank you notes.
I will put them all into a satchel and carry them to you.
If you live far away, I will mail them.
Please send me your address pronto.

Funnily it is the shame of sham that shampoo runs away down a drain. Oh dear. What an absolute disaster for the many supporting bottles bearing differing names. Nevertheless it is the revered gel that will last in its cast of sachet. No problems with dressing up an updo update upon upcoming uniqueness. Dares to be a giant hippopotamus in a bathing suit waving. Wave back then. Go on or he or she will be unhappy. Oh dear. Oglala's originals organised organs. No keyboards though. Standing sipping seeding seedlings. Stew. Hahahaha and boiled boilers booking. Hahahaha mystified parrots peering. Hahahaha and an onion skin eating its breakfast. *** unification z
Incognito
( by Joan Donnelly Ellis Oct.23, 2015)
Little girl in updo hairstyle and suspension earrings
Mommies shiny red pumps grace her feet
Nana's garden party bonnet is settled
Almost ready for a walk with baby doll in carriage
A Sunday morning stroll down Hickory Street
She seats herself in front of the vanity mirror
And paints her lips, cheeks and lashes once and then again
She smacks her lipstick in place, smiles at her just pretend face
Playing grown up is her favourite game
All the neighbours greet her as Mrs. Murphy
And they fuss over her new born baby, Jill
On some occasions she will be invited in for tea
Mrs. Murphy is delightful company
And she will engage you thoroughly
With stories of her poor family's indulgences and sin
Rows of assorted necklaces sparkle
As from her throat they dangle showoffishly
She raises the skirt of borrowed dress lest she trip
Grabs the handbag with the zip
A child of seven going on thirty-three
