My heart is a pelican beak.
Opens wide but never sings.
Conceals what the tongue cannot survive.
Drips salt from truths left unchewed.
A pouch tucked with fishbones,
straining to sift the indigestible

The rumbling sound,
While I lie low to the ground-
Calling upon the cuffs of sleep -
To keep me in the jails deep-
It is a wave that strikes;
A hungry tummy to get a slice,
Of bread,
Of breath.
With a frothed mouth,
The emptiness goes south.
In this darkness, craving for food,
I remember the nuts unchewed.
With my head under the pillow, I yawn;
And the stomach enzymes spawn.
Midnight hunger is disaster,
That needs to be served like a master.

I did not ask
to need them,
the little white beetles to swallow
running up my veins and
settling to chew
on wires you say should remain unchewed.

If we did not have a refrigerator
we would have nothing in the house unchewed
But luckily we do
At first we tried putting things on the kitchen table
It was not nearly high enough for this puppy
He can reach through the kitchen pass through also
Joe vacuumed yesterday
But I had to do it again
After Buddy drug out the mouse poison trap
Click Pop Crack Click Pop Crack Crack
I was horrified when I saw what he was decimating
He seems unaffected today
He is a chewing machine
But we love him; he was dropped off at the right place
God knew where to leave this one.

MOSTLY DARKNESS
It’s mostly a mess
Of half-eaten black nothing
After sweet sunset in spring
When predator rays of darkness
Come devour the light sky.
Each unchewed dark bite
Reminds me that light -
No matter how I sigh –
Is impermanent, just passing
Through universal emptiness :
It's mostly a mess
Of half-eaten black nothing.
