They said we’d have snow and, by God, they were right
I’m told that it came down just after midnight
But systems in place and procedures pre-planned
Meant our society could make a stand
They’ve closed all the schools and they’ve cancelled the trains
They’ve banned all the buses from tight country lanes
And all the armed forces are still on standby
While shops have toboggans piled up to the sky
Motorbike riders keep feet near the ground
For fear that black ice they can’t see spins them round
The soup kitchens sprang into life at great speed
So hungry and half frozen people can feed
The snowploughs have been out on duty all night
People took comfort at that very sight
And some will take refuge in local church halls
So we’ll be prepared when that second flake falls

There’s a blizzard outside
Wanna’ go for a ride?
With toboggans and sleighs
And drifts that amaze
So we bundle up tight
And head out with delight
The winds are so brisk
We evaluate the risk
After our ride
We head back inside
The hot chocolate’s now hot
We sip down a lot
There’s a blizzard outside
The winds howl and chide
“Stay by the fire,
And avoid my ire!”

Hurry up and go;
Slow down and wait;
Drink when your hungry;
and Fast when your thirsty?
~
Dream while your awaken;
Sleep while your body is dead;
Even blindmen read books;
Some even drive, toboggans and sleds;

I saw a boy walking, alone, towards the school
I heard laughter from the other side of the street
I saw smiles across the street
I remember a colourful photography
Pastel colours like an old painting
Four gravel roads meeting
Divided by the golden ratio
Smoke from the pipe of a yellow, cosy, house
A red house with a stand-alone snowman
Tracks from toboggans ending in a fence
An insignificant corner left down
A boy without laugther and smile
A big difference between
Laughter and smiles
And only laughter
With the street
Between

Childhood Friends
When I was about nine or ten
I had a friend called John back then.
And in the winter deep with snow
On our toboggans we would go.
Then down the steep and slippery hill
We sped and screamed at the thrill.
Then Graham came and brought his steed
Speeding downhill at excessive speed.
And in our minds we were King Arthur’s men
And on a charge to victory then.
Waving swords of sticks of wood
We made great slaughter to preserve the good.
Until brave Sir Graham, an illustrious knight,
Hit a tree stump and caused great fright.
And so an ambulance had to come
And somebody ran to tell his mum.
His mum, the Lady Edith of high birth,
Came and showed but little mirth.
Sir John, who had with honour fought
Went home both tired and overwrought.
And with Merlin’s brew of ginger bear
Brave Sir Graham’s wounds did disappear.
And we hoped that on another day
There would be snow in which to play.

Winter rhapsody, the snowflakes ascending slowly,.
Reaching the rooftops and houses.
Winter rhapsody, pedestrians in their winter clothes,
Warm caps snowsuits ,coats and boots,
Winter rhapsody, a horse drawn sleigh riding through the pioneer village,
You could hear the jingle bells.
Winter rhapsody the athletically dressed skiers zooming down the hill,
Toboggans and sleds, parents and children delight.
Winter rhapsody, a walk through the deep snow,
The air fresh and clean,
Winter rhapsody,,building a snowman called Frosty,
Making snow angels in the fresh snow
Winter rhapsody, snow forts and snowball fights,
There are many winter activities.
Winter rhapsody,, the resorts where the parents and children,
Live their dreams and appear in elegant fashions.

Time recorded my memories of youth
when winter felt magical and much more.
I was oblivious to the cold truth;
and with snow skis strapped to my feet, I'd soar.
Come Christmas, I'd write Santa a letter
while my mom hung a wreath on our front door.
And homemade snow cones tasted much better
than popsicles purchased from any store.
Winter was a time to look forward to,
a time to build snow forts and slide down hills.
And snowball fights were a fun thing to do,
like riding toboggans or taking spills.
Yesterdays weren't frightened of tomorrow,
my innocence knew nothing of sorrow.

Winter fresh, crisp and clean,
God's dessert for mankind,
Delicious experentially,
The mountains you ski,
Toboggans and sleds,
A swift passage to tomorrow,
The snowman and snow forts,
A favorite passtime,
The days of maple syrup and pancakes,
The pioneers making us welcome,
With their traditional old-fashioned ways,
The blessings of our God.

The icy snow sparkles in the midday sun
as we glide down on cardboard toboggans.
Scarves wrapped thrice around our necks,
overcoats buttoned to the top.
We feel no pain as we tumble off,
just laugh, and run for another go.
In the distance other children are skiing,
planks tied to their feet, sticks in hands.
Younger children have built a snowman,
coal taken from parents' bunkers for eyes.
A by-pass now runs through our playground,
this vast green used for childhood games.
Traffic cones line our slalom run.
Cars skid where we used to slide.
Lorries drive between our goalposts.
where a fantastic goal was scored.
And where a superb six was hit,
road markings show us the boundary.
Progress has left us with childhood memories
the new generation will never see.

Winter! What beauty and pureness unfold
Snow so white, falling like the rain in spring
While some embrace this, others say it’s cold
But this is the season to have a great fling
Dancing and eating, come friends, lets sing
Everywhere the sound of snow bells ringing
Children peeping out the window lips stuck to the pane
Front yards decked with snowmen, icicles dripping
Pull out the snow sleds and toboggans lets go insane
Lets forget about the season when we had wind and rain
Lovers walking to the café, hand in hand
All bundled up, knee high boots, scarves around the neck
Soft and gentle music playing by the in-house band
Nice and cozy on the inside empty chairs on the deck
Her cheeks all rosy, he cups her face and on her lips plants a peck

There are many days until winter,
Snow falls gently on the houses and trees.
The houses look like they are made of gingerbread,
The snow sweeps across the rooftops.
Branches of the spruces and pines touched with fresh snow,
Snowflakes exquiste to view.
Walking becomes a careful excercise,
The snow covered sidewalks.
Soon to be cleaned and swept,
Pedestrians dressed with their warm coats and hats.
Vehicles standing in the driveway,
Partially covered with snow.
A labrador retriever shakes off the snow,
A wise owl sits on a snow covered tree branch.
The beautiful blue jay sits on the branch of a snow covered pine tree,
Parents and children warmly dressed, caress the winter weather.
The gentle hill becomes their playground,
Toboggans and slides are a favorite passtime.
Skiiers can be seen gliding down slopes,
When you arrive home a delicous cup of cocoa or tea.
Welcomes and warms the fans of winter,
God's day complete, good to be home.
Thankful for such a beautiful winter day,
Blessed by the Lord.

Once upon a time of grand pleasure
There was a child with thoughts of pure fun
Days danced from one to another
How wonderful it felt to be young
To capture secret snow forts
on toboggans of imagination
To cross vast fishing streams
in the canoes of creation
To race through open fields
at the silent speed of light
To dig for buried treasure
and catch fireflies at night
Those places that we visited
were at the heart of time and space
They may be gone at the present
Yet, they can never be erased
The ballgame in the corner lot
that spectacular catch you made
The birthday of your special gift
when all your wished were repaid
The years when certain music
was inspiring and brand new
When books became a vacation
getting lost with; "you know who."
Let's visit that time in the present
not retreat to the past
Let's do something that's pleasant
for life rushes by too fast
Now - is the time to discover
what a wonder life can be
Having pure fun with another
by releasing the child in; "me."
