the steampunk convention was presided over by ABW, Mrs. McNack
Arrogant Bee Woman is what we called this piranha behind her back
ABW stood for something else but none of us knew what any more
We all held our breath though when queen bee came onto the floor
She had a way about her that was beyond arrogant and proud
Creeping through the exhibits quickly, stealthy, not loud
Yet there was something about her that struck terror in all
She was the steampunk’s ABW, thin, sneaky, scary and tall.
Why does she terrify us? Another steam punker asked me.
I knew it was not her costume even though she looked like a bee
Maybe it was her polish, her spit, her fine way of shining.
I know when she entered the cafeteria, I had to quit dining.

Motorcyclists terrify me
I fear they will fly off the road
Who will stop to help?
Will we all keep whizzing by?
Every motorcyclist is someone’s baby
Someone’s grandchild, someone’s love
On the interstate where no one is careful, I cringe.
Terrified the rider is going to be maimed or killed
I say a prayer when I see a motorcyclist heading my way.
I try never to pass him or her.
Hoping not to see them again
Lying next to the road or worse.

Monorhymes are fun for all
I just chased one down the hall
He did a tumble and a fall
And threw at me a tiny doll
The doll was odd, she had a caul
She did not come from a plain mall
She was tiny, pretty small
Did a backward cartwheel on the wall
Monorhyme next threw a ball
I think he had a lot of gall
He made fun of my wrap and shawl
I groveled past and did a crawl
Does he intimidate you? Asked Paul
I saw a nod from my Uncle Saul
My mouth made a tiny little squall
Monorhymes terrify me after all

Surrounded by peeling wallpaper
it’s a picture of provocation;
These holes tended to terrify her.
Spots that need so much renovation
must be rebuilt right down to the core;
There’s happiness in new construction.
You’ve got an idea what’s in store,
once the soul is restored to this house;
An antique knob attached to the door.
Enough beauty to instantly rouse
a blend called American Bauhaus.

Headlight humanity;
The cherry-red brake lights,
Becoming florid totality with the things your eyes do to them.
You destructive little thing.
You keep your hands noncommittally at five and eight,
But you use your signal like a well-worn saint,
Because your mother worries, and the passenger seat is still warm.
Your radio buzzes like the wasp nest that used to terrify you
On the wall of your childhood home:
They finally found a cure to the human condition.
Isn’t that great?
We’ve thwarted Mother Nature and all of her gifts—
We’ve put highways over her heart and filled her eyes
With LED cataracts,
And doesn’t she look better this way?
You think you saw her skull hanging on a fence post in Louisiana.
Her voice haunts the parking garage behind the airport,
But her infection
Has been culled.
They finally found a cure to the human condition.
Isn’t that great?

Some people are afraid of mice and snakes
They do not scare me; they do not scare me!
Creatures who terrify me and give me the shakes
Horses, my nemesis, giant beasts who are my enemy.
I have never fallen off of a mouse or a snake.

I knew that Buddy would be the first dog to welcome Beau into our family.
Buddy is enormous at a hundred and sixteen pounds; he looks like a pony.
Galloping at you at breakneck speed; but he is a gentle giant.
His face has the look of a German shepherd, husky and wolf.
He has amber eyes that see through your soul; he is docile and sweet.
His girth, weight and size of his head terrify those who do not know him.
My sister who is afraid of dogs said “I thought he was going to eat me.”
Actually, he jumped on the recliner and spun his head back and forth
Watching us with happy glee – two mommies! We are identical twins.

We have a witch on the payroll the police chief said.
She scares and intimidates me, fills me with dread.
Why do we pay for that? I asked, is there better use of my money?
Perhaps said the chief, but although she is never sunny….
She has cracked some murder cases none of us could figure out.
She brings her familiar, a black cat named “gad-a-bout”.
Together they are a formidable pair, but one thing I guess.
They both terrify me, I have to admit and confess.

A million things swimming around in my head.
Things I could say that should never be said.
Things I could tell that you’d never believe.
Things that I’ve seen that are too far to see.
Things that I’ve heard that are not made of sound.
Things that I know which have never been found.
Things that could change the world. Things that could heal.
Things that would terrify were they revealed.
Things of the type based on all that I’ve seen,
are best left unspoken and kept in between
myself and the one who has shown them to me.
The one who keeps whispering continually.
In my mind they’re all swimming, an ocean too vast
to contain it all so… I’ll risk all that have.

Oh no, Tokoloshe is coming for me.
I don’t want to die.
Oh, my God, I better flee.
I’ll hide behind the Suonoki tree.
The vicious predator won’t find me with his evil eye.
Oh no, Tokoloshe is coming for me.
There is no one to rescue me; I can see.
Inside the underground catacomb will terrify.
Oh, my God, I better flee.
Through the skeleton headwalls of his enemy,
Tokoloshe will devour me, but why?
Oh no, Tokoloshe is coming for me.
The hellion has come to collect his fee.
On that, I can rely.
Oh, my God, I better flee.
Oh dear, Tokoloshe, don’t kill me, I plea.
I want to live, I cry.
Oh no, Tokoloshe is coming for me.
Oh, my God, I better flee.

Cackles were heard from down under on a hill far away
fifty little saucy spiders scurry helter skelter out to play
A hefty witch stirs her cauldron next to her Bagoon
snake eyes spoon an evil mush as feet dance around the room
Strumpa strumpa crumpetta crumpetta, stomps and rhythms yes they're dead
The stars in heaven grow fangs and the moon wears a skirt of thorns
chainsaw demons flee the sky with decapitated scorn
Oh my oh my Halloween frights are here, although the night is young
old smelly garlic garlands have been strung,
Strumpa strumpa crumpetta crumpetta, stomps and rhythms yes they're dead
She's here to petrify, terrify, horrify and glorify her trade
when they get here they will drink purple blue Kool-aid
Oh Gee Oh Gosh she has lost her pompadour galosh
perhaps its hiding in the pumpkin squash
Strumpa strumpa crumpetta crumpetta, stomps and rhythms yes they're dead.

It starts with avoiding phone calls
pricks up into chills when
no more can be avoided
oozes into dreams of teeth
falling out by the dozens
stalks past awash in fear
nothing can be saved from
the gaze of Other
And why should you be saved
you who have not
earned the right to be sad when
others have known grief
deeper than the well
everyone must now drink from,
instead of putting confidence
in the clear waters that were
So nothing is to be done but
bash away at bystanders again and again
and again because
the darkness holds no fear now
it was and has always been
people that terrify
even when they hold out
the well-wishing well-waters to your lips

A dog's job is to foes terrify,
Actors of scary films horrify,
The police a rogue identify,
Insurance firms one indemnify...
Science would laymen's claims verify,
Panels rigged elections nullify,
Microscopes to microbes magnify,
Deodorants to bad air purify.
Witnesses in courts to testify,
A counsel to trial judge mollify,
Big stereos to music amplify;
Flowers one's surroundings beautify...
The Angels Lord God glorify,
Nudists the public mortify!

Sally Sue did not take guff off of anybody
This included monsters
Nightmare monster had no idea about this.
Thinking he was all big and bad and would terrify her.
She was only four and they are easy to frighten.
He made himself big
His shadow was enormous
His voice was deep and dangerous-sounding.
Sally Sue laughed at his efforts.
“You do not scare me,” she told him.
He could not believe she faced him down with a snarl.
Not understanding that she has six older brothers.

Who are you
Question asks daily,
Some people want to know
More about you,
You look so meager in their bogus eyes,
You don't possess what they have
But your presence continue
giving them sleepless night.
Hating you due to
What you don't see
"Huuh!"
They are copying everything you do
And continue to ask themselves
Who does he " she" think he " she" is?
"Heeh! Gloomy ...
In your hypocritical eyes"
Your secret identity
terrify them
daily
How could they be
if you had what they have?
Yooh! they could throw themselves
in their bins and septic tanks.
" Death could be their daily songs"
You are gifted,
Just be greatful to God,
for His gifts in you,
Seen and known by many people.
