I gaze at a saffron sunset
as a tawny owl sails overhead,
while yellow sunflowers feel threat
until evening prayers are said.
The flaxen fields and amber plains
reflect the xanthous of fading sun.
A copse of vivid ocher trees wanes
awaiting a primrose moon to stun.
Canary daisies soundly sleep
and dream beside a citrine lake
while glorious goldenrods peep
gaily as fallow bucks’ antlers shake.
Mary’s marigolds shine their best,
a nankeen horizon fails to arrest.
Soon the sun will propose its rest
and slip below the mountain’s crest.

A tiny tawny torso
With tiny tawny eyes.
In tiny tawny cautious flows
The tiny tawny flies.
A tiny tawny heartbeat
With tiny tawny pace;
A tiny tawny look upon
A tiny tawny face.
Tiny tawny feathers
Of tiny tawny brown.
Tiny tawny eyebrows make
A tiny tawny frown.
A tiny tawny tinted breast
So tiny tawny cute.
A tiny tawny voice to call
A tiny tawny hoot.
Two tiny tawny wing tips
For tiny tawny flight
The tiny tender tawny owl
Takes off into the night.

Deep in a valley there is this secret place,
a place to relax with the sun upon your face.
The only way out is to climb up hills so steep
all that you can see is fields of grazing sheep!
Surrounded by restless trees rustling in a grove.
The crackling of a log that burns to heat a stove.
The cawing of a bird and the buzzing of the bees
a trickling from a stream the mind is puts at ease.
When the night-time comes, take off your walking boots
then along comes a tawny owl who sits alone and hoots.
While sitting on your deck with a million stars above
You will feel at peace and this place you’ll surely love.

Abandoned
I have read and told little white lies to bring smiles to faces of old folk, abandoned! I have reared lambs and calves and piglets too, not knowing why they were abandoned? I have seen left wrapped up warm, with a note, which gives a name of the babe abandoned! I've rescued and successfully reared carrion crow chicks when a farmer shot the mum and dad, which left them abandoned! Been tempted to pick up tawny owl chicks, which whilst on the ground looked abandoned; did pick them up and placed them safely where mum and dad could find them. A long time ago fell out with religion, even to this day I look around and see the poor souls it has abandoned. Oh yes, I do have faith, in one, Mother Nature, it so breaks my heart to find that in all she has done for us, she too, is now being, yes, abandoned!

the mother red fox
snuggles in warm den, feeds her kits...
a-oo-oo-oo-ooo
the owl in the tree
on a pitch dark moonless night ...
who-who-who-who-who
the mother red fox
says shhh, shhh, shhh, to the owl....
kits just wow, wow, wow
the crack of dawn breaks
a sunrise of red and blue ...
zzzzz, zzzz, silence speaks
I get a kick out of the whole song, "What Does The Fox Say"
but I dedicate my poem to "Fraka-kaka-kaka-kaka-kow"

Contest: What Does The Fox Say
I did some research on the Red Fox and they make a sound
somewhat like the Tawny Owl and other trisyllabic sounds
like they are talking to each other..
They are mostly nocturnal

Yellow ochre sun
In Vermilion sky
What a lovely canvas
Pleasing to the eye
Cirrus clouds change
From grey to red
As wild birds fly
To their tree top bed
Red now changes
Back to darkened grey
As ebony night
Is on its way
There’s an eerie light
From the silver moon
We quicken our pace
To get home soon
Brown bats flitting
Around on the wing
Tawny owl chasing
Every moving thing
Yellow crickets chirping
In the long green grass
Moon disappears
As the grey clouds pass
So soon the darkness
Gives way to morning light
As dawn approaches fast
What a beautiful sight
Tangerine sun
In Magenta sky ….
