Afternoon Silence

Afternoon Silence
By WinkofHeart (a.k.a. Brett Somers)

Whisper of the wind outside
Whisper of the wind within
A pause on Mother clock
To breathe it all in
Steady chirps beyond my window
The busyness has dimmed
Crests of light cross louvered shutters
Letting light into my heart
This moment
Allowing it to be
Fully awakening
Calm, assurance
Yes, yes, this is living

Love Poem In 25 Words

Love story in 25 words
By Moonbeam

Note: This is not a poem by WinkofHeart (aka Brett Somers)
I'm posting this poem for a friend of mine, Marianne Walther aka Moonbeam to help her share her voice with the world. Please comment on this poem encouraging her to open her own PoetrySoup account.

We talked for hours.
your eyes
turned my brain
into hot pudding.

you left me only
your voice by telephone.

then nothing......

only hot pudding.

Moonbeam Mari Anne

  The Moonbeam Mari Anne
A poem by Brett Somers

The moonbeam graced the Austin sky,
The Mari Anne spirit whisking by. Spreading her love,
Her mysterious zest,
Manifesting turquoise upon my chest.
And back she slipped,
Beyond Austin she skipped,
Like a stone on placid waters,
The sound of her pitter patters.
Swoops into New York and settles in.
A jeweler of bead and pin,
Crafting her Mari Anne,
For yet another grateful and devoted fan!

This poem is dedicated to the gifted jeweler and accomplished graphic designer Marianne Walther!

Flit and Spin

Flit and Spin
By Brett Somers

Mind sticking round and round.
Loneliness is that sticking sound.
No pillows of comfort
Nor footstep, firm ground.
Why does my loneliness stick?
My ears make me sick.
Meddlesome they play.
Which way, which way.
Decisively I sway.

Meadows sit and chirp.
Flit and mock.
How I sit and flit.
Flit and rock.
Flit and rock.
Mind sticking round and round
Rubbing stones.
This wonderous wanderlust.
Pondering thus.

A penchant to find
This time in mine.
A vast equator,
balanced incubator.
So as such I sit.
I flit a bit.
Wander and wonder.
I sit.
So weary of not finding it.

I search.
So desperately to find.
My divine –
my craft of soul.
My purposed whole.
So I sit and flit.
Unable to accept it.

My dearest friend,
I write to you.
How did this end?
Or tilted on an axis It spins.
Time It appends.
So alive then am I.
To flit and spin.
Flit and spin.
So I’ll find my axis.
Spin without end.

The Life of a Flame

Life of a Flame
By Brett Somers

Arched over its wick,
calmly swaying,
now moves with a flick.
In this moment,
it lives,
a hot yellow flame,
so soft, so beautiful,
yet intense,
powerful.

And rides above
a waxy caldera,
feeding from
its waxy lake.
A bouncing flame,
jumping with life,
pulsing its glorious name.

Pure energy,
pure light.
Why do I feel
this
flame has something to reveal?
If I could see my soul,
would it glow
with such brilliance,
such pure essence?

I stare,
transfixed
And when I choose
to let go of this muse,
with breath,
I let it go.

And in the darkness, I sit.
Flame,
remains for a bit.
A star grows dimmer,
into a faint glimmer.

Soft wax cradles
and firms a base,
for the wick’s embrace.
It quietly waits for another day,
to come to life again,
to burn its brilliance on,
until the wax is gone,
until the wax is gone.

Thought Springs From Winter's Dreams

Thought Springs from Winter’s Dreams
Written By Brett Somers
2-20-17

Times are rolling.
Focused, pleased with the world indeed.
When Winter whispers, “Spring is near,”
Mind disperses,
Heart expands,
As the warm gusts float in.
And with breath exhaled,
Time begins a stagnant stop.
That which was withheld-in, begins,
To drop.
Trickle of Spring.
A leak from Winter’s wintering.
As condensed thought,
From frozen Winter,
Begins to rot.
Winters frozen icicle,
By clearer direction it points.
But in every direction Spring will be,
Transforming solid ice into an edgeless sea.

And so with Spring, it is also with me.
On this first Spring day,
My thoughts are dissipating.
Locked-in thought from this icicle pop,
Is also leaking from me.
What I tried to forget,
Can no longer be forgot.
Released from its frozen tomb,
These thoughts flood this room.
As I tread,
I feel like I’m treading nowhere.
As if I were back in utero,
Hearing life’s first sounds,
From within my mother’s Sacramento.

Oxygen Rushes In To Me

Oxygen Rushes In To Me
Written By Brett Somers
12-19-16

The audible plunge,
On a Somers night.
Cleansing site.
My hands free of this fight.

I leaned back to throw.
In my hand a small window.
Moon kissed a glow.
Eyes fixed beyond what I did know.

Wind whipped my ear,
Reminding me of things I didn’t want to hear.
She’d stretched my heart,
And then let it go.
Like a rubber band,
She’d let me go.

My skin bare,
Standing on shores edge.
In my underwear.
I don’t care.
Up to my waste,
A tear I could taste,
I threw my ring.
To break free of the hurting,
To break free of the hurting.

Above mountain’s silhouette it flew.
Above, with haste it knew.
Times arch has come to an end.
Now, below, brackish waters bend.
To consume this thing,
To the end,
To the end.

Fell back into a salty sleep.
My new life.
And deep my breath withheld.
My body aching to be free.
Emerged above water’s edge,
Oxygen rushes into me,
Oxygen rushes into me.

If Plants Could Talk

If Plants Could Talk
Written by Brett Somers
On 4-20-2016

Oh Sun, thank you one.
Treat me soil thy toil my oil.
Eat me critters.
Nibble on my under leaf.
That tickles when you hold me so.
Wind blow stronger,
I can withstand you.
What a community are we,
With so much vivacity.
Oh humans, read a sonnet to me.
Pluck my fruit and shade your loins.
Feel my power, my strength.
It will be in you soon to share,
This energy beyond compare.
Look at my beauty so faire.
Dwell on my soft petals.
Enchant thee in my wet meadows.
Hold me closely as you pluck me neatly.
Smell each note as you greet me.
My fragrance flows past your nose,
And to all that knows.
Let this cup of dew renew,
The very essence within you.
My soft velvety curves,
Enchant you.
I bow to thee,
My eternal beauty.
From this fertile soil,
I have risen to the heavens,
For you to devour me.

I Love You From You

I Love You from You
Written By Brett Somers
On 4/10/16

When feeling down
And the world is crashing ‘round
Someone’s loving words
Can hold your heart profound
Your day lighter
Your step brighter

And when their love is remiss
Or you’re lacking in love’s kiss
When there’s no one to embrace you
And all the world’s
About to face you

That needed boost
Has always been right there
That gentle whisper in your ear
Of the kindest words you ever did hear
I love you
I love you
I love you

That gentle whisper
So profound and clear
Is coming from your inner ear
What you just heard
Is I love you
From you

What delight to know
Your worry and woe
Can be vanished with a few simple words
Anywhere you go

Star Soup

 Star Soup
Written By Brett Somers
On 3-23-16
I stand yet I don’t know where
Me and this night sky begins
This light is consuming me
Woozy I feel like running
From the power of this pulsating
Shower that’s grabbed me shaking
I’m being force-fed Star Soup
I can’t move
I can’t think
I’m drowning in this starlight sink
Milky way is there
There scattered through my hair
So many stars
I can barely bare
I’ve yet to feel my feet on this mound
Am I really here on this Lake Arrowhead ground?
I fear this supernatural glare
Where my existence so insignificant
That my knowledge of self would disappear
On this night when the stars were so near

Homage To Poetry -Formerly Poet a Tree

Homage to Poetry (Formerly PoET a Tree)
By Brett Somers
3/19/16

Poetry is everywhere
It’s in our hearts
It’s in our minds
It’s the purest expression
Of human kind
It’s the breath
Of our inner creation
A touch of the divine
As they sing the lines
Of Dylan, Morrison, Kendrick Lamar
To the base of their idling car
They may say poetry ain’t cool
Wiser – They know
For poetry at times
Is an abstract old fool

Soul Staring

Soul Staring
By Brett Somers
3/18/16

Look
Focus
Under your sternum
Are you there?
Stare
Hold your attention
Now feel
It’s real
There’s no room to think
Your mind
Not elsewhere
Wait …
Watch your awareness grow
Like a flower
Slow
-ly
Open
-ing
Answers will come
Clear sight
Peaceful delight
Did you?
Did you stare at your soul?
Do you?
Do you feel whole?
Repeat – repeat – repeat –
For a continuous retreat

Permission To Be Me

Permission to Be Me
Written by Brett Somers
On 3-18-16

May I,
Please
But I
Nevermind
Geeze
Forget it
I’m always
The last person
To give permission
To me

It’s THAT I want
Dreams big
Glorious things
Superstar rings
Can I
May I
Please please pretty please
Will I give me
Permission
To be me?

The Art of Dreaming

The Art of Dreaming
Written by Brett Somers
On 3/18/16

You slip into slumber
Eyes roll and flick
Your deep under
Symbols and scenes
Hold secret inner
Workings
Fear and joy
Heart’s not
Aware
Of this decoy
Monster attack?
NP
You create a puppy pack
But true meaning revealed
Deep subconscious unsealed
Aha!!!*@#!!!
I got this Freud

My Ship Is Coming

My Ship is Coming
Written by Brett Somers
On 3-18-16
From ocean’s bottom
My ship rises
Unknown to me
I wonder what majesty
It will be
What truth will come about
When stern and bow come out
It crests ocean’s top
And here I stop
I weep on my knees
Why did I not know
40 years of my life to appease
But now it’s clear
Where my ship will steer
A new horizon
An eastward gale
I’m ready now
To finally set sail
