I love the blank, bare page
unmarred by usage
untouched by erasure
thirsty as desert sand
expectant, waiting
to pull onto itself and hold
all the words of my heart.

Snow

whimsical winter white crystal flakes of wonder fluffy snow, bright white, leaves the world a blunder. a blanket coats the world, unmarred, pure, sugary flakes, in a whirl assure that winter is here

Sun Dance

Our scars
self-requited
define
who we are

The pain
when it’s welcome
embedded
unmarred

Each blemish
redeeming
those choices
to blame

Absolving
our future
releasing
the shame

Lord, which road should I take?
They look equally appealing. I have a hard
choice to make.

From where I stand,
both ways appear to be unmarred
and grand!

I cry,
“With doubt, I’ve sparred!”
Sigh!

Lord, which road should I take?
Both ways appear to be unmarred.
Sigh!

Spirit Lake

a snowy winters day
along the shore of Spirit Lake
civilization is far away
what beautiful scenery it makes

a hundred deer at least
a red fox trots by
an eagle sits atop a tree
then he spreads his wings to fly

this is nature's beauty, pure
unmarred by dirty hands
you will only see it here
on the shore of Spirit Lake

Beauty

Beauty

A rarity chanced by one who sees
But a multitude by one who looks
Its pleasing hues to calm the mind
Scenes of charm by nature’s hand
Unspoilt, unmarred in natural state
With liberty to shine and flaunt
In uncorrupted habitat
And escape an urban ruination
Where human trespass blights
The rules of nature’s kingdom

Shattered

the glass shatters
jagged pieces hit the floor
like tears falling from my eyes
the sound of the breaking glass
echos through the room
like my screams did
when it all began to fall apart
glass, clear, unmarred
but so breakable
now lay in pieces on the floor
what once was whole
is now nothing more than
broke pieces on the wooden floor

Midway, Mountainside

I stretch lazily in the morning sun-
 awakening to pure mountain air
 mingled with herbs and flowers.

the mist gives a magical hue
 to fresh greens and pinks
of the garden beyond the gate.

the stream rushes by with resonance,
chasing the mountainside down to the Mattole
then the Pacific pounding the cliffs below.

 my senses are delighted
 by the magnificent beauty,
 raw, unmarred, unsurpassed....

Picture

Beside the swell of ocean waves
That strain to reach the eastern coast,
There lies away a distant dream
From which I haven’t yet awoke

Her silhouette is bathed in rays
As fingers stretch and bend to pluck
A song that I will never know,
With feelings I can never touch

But still I see that subtle grace
Left yet unmarred by years undone,
Still held within her sea-green eyes
As she looks westward, toward the sun.

Love

only this
dinner together
most of the time
                while we watch
                the world stretch
through the
cracks of boredom
and we sift our problems
                with the world's
                to make our lives
appear perfect
or more stainless steel
and unmarred than most
                when in reality
                our lives together
are white-bread
garden-variety
dime a dozen
                that's love

One Garden Day

Worn gloves we donned, took to our knees
Black soil we turned, for bright pansies;
As tulips spied, rich loam we tilled,
Then spread thick mulch—a robin shrilled.

The sun beat down, not cloud-deterred
While, from the south, warm zephyrs stirred …
Then pause, I took, to watch my wife,
Her face carefree, unmarred by strife,

And, from a squat, she glanced my way,
Our eyes engaged, a moment’s play,
At last I winked, my love to share,
That garden day in fresh spring air.
