A HOLIDAY SCORE

What to do? What to do?
The pancakes do stick!
The milk is out sick!
So the brethren of eggs
beaten and stirred
resound in yolk
a yodeling
quick
so the grandson’s lips
smack
with satisfaction
so their fingers
can pluck
their electronic guitars — 
for games like sugarplums
dance in their heads,
a holiday score.

I saw surreal scenes at the mall:
unhinged shoppers in a hot brawl,
a tired Santa running
away--I'm not funning!--
pursued by kids starting to squall.

I finished my shopping and fled.
The visions that danced in my head
were sugarplums? No way!
So ended my rough day.
I rushed home and went right to bed.

crusty blood in the flower garden
sawed off body parts as misguided soil
broken sharp objects strategically placed
yet and still she is one of the living
this is the day when she was supposed to start kindergarten
her excitement was similar to visions of sugarplums dancing in her head
then suddenly........once upon a time.....she would have been.....
