Squawking, Talking, Humming, Spelling
A talking bird is smart let’s agree,
they have a wonderful vocabulary,
so it may seem bazaar,
that as smart as birds are;
Are they smarter than a spelling bee?...

Locked in a tiny room like a thief
Doing hard labor beyond belief
Sitting on the throne
With a groan and moan
Concentrating on spelling relief

I spell and spell all day
a-m-a-r-i-l-l-o
Words I don't even know

a-l-g-o-r-i-t-h-m
A word of Arabic origin?
p-e-r-n-i-c-i-o-u-s
Meaning harm; at Webster's best

c-o-l-l-o-q-u-i-a-l
Or at least I think that's how it's spelled
All for this stupid spelling bee
a-n-n-o-y-i-n-g...

Eating His Words
Jordan is a genius.
He's the spelling bee champ
at our school.
There's not a word
that he can't spell.
And that, to me, is cool!

"Jordan, how did you get
so smart?" I asked.
"Because as I recall,
you were the worst speller
in our class. But now
you can spell them all."

With a grin on his face,
he answered,
"Oh, I'm not so extraordinary.
But the smartest thing I ever did,
was eat the dictionary!"...

Premium Member Why Not a Spelling Cow
Why is it a spelling bee, not a spelling cow?
Well, hey, she said. Let’s not be silly now.
A spelling bee makes sense in what way?
I have to ask this non-thinker, Miss Jay.
Stuck with her for a whole year of school.
She has no imagination, everything is a rule.
Why is an eager beaver not an eager leaguer?
She looks irritated now. Is she mad at me?
Second grade is going to be a horrible trip,
Because first grade frankly has been a complete zip....

Neck and Neck
In competition, neck and neck
They held each other's pace.
The crowd was rooting silently
The whole entire race.

The both of them so well-prepared,
They'd practiced and they'd trained,
So every possibility
Their brains had entertained.

The final minutes soon approached
And I was thrilled to see
Both Vanya* and Gokul* were winners
Of the Spelling Bee!

*Vanya Shivashankar and Gokul Venkatachalam
were declared co-winners of the 2015
Scripps National Spelling Bee last night....
