'neath noon sun's halo,
silence echoing away,
scarecrow scares the day.
crows laugh heckle
and steal straw
from the scarecrow
if only i had a brain
words hurt more
than sticks and stones
tys hillside garden
peppers tomatoes cabbage
a neighborhood gift
rosemary bushes
rows of carrots and green beans
scarecrow named mazey
I thought that grasshopper just said,
"I don't need no no-knead bread",
but on my neck, I have no head -
just a pumpkin, there, instead.
golden harvest moon
illuminates the night sky --
a scarecrow keeps watch

For Catie Lindsey's Traditional Haiku contest.
At midnight,
The scarecrow
Sleepwalks and leaves
His mark upon every grave
Giant footprints abound,
In a quiet sleepy place
Called Terry Town
A scarecrow made
Many kills
It gave him
Such a beautiful thrill
Until Pete Moss
Who's know to double cross
Sent him scrambling
Back up the hill
Straw for hair
Charcoal nose
Awkward stare
Robotic pose
Emerald dreams
Carving my eyes
Red painted cheeks
Onyx cries
Wonderful at wind dancing
A lonely scarecrow in the meadow
never stopped a forager
So when the sun shined down on them
myriad wildflowers adored her

vines twist 'round boot soles—
"Sir, your cravate!" gasps the scarecrow.
orange truce blooms at dusk
Let this be
A Breckenridge morning
This road never ends
Running through
This tall switch grass and
Meeting this scarecrow
For breakfast, early morning
Collecting all manner of things,
From battered old derbies to rings,
He still couldn’t find,
It stayed on his mind,
A three-legged scarecrow that sings.
There is an old sign
That is made of a scarecrow
Head made of pumpkin
It tells you the way to town
And number miles to get there

The legendary
Scarecrow, corn stalks, pumpkin head
Owner’s invention
Full with cloak and overalls
Outstretched arms seem inviting
Russell Sivey
we did something not too hard
put a scarecrow in the yard
now when kids trick or treat
theyll likely skip our street
or try my wifes stewed swiss chard.
as the black cloud
descends
on his field
the fierce scarecrow
springs to life…
pink plastic
flyswatter
in each
hand
scarecrow Joe is sliding off his pole
not enough cognition to fulfill his role
lost his balls and his jacks
to the ruthless Taliban
stumbling to Oz down a bloody brick road
With his new gift he was homeward bound
Scarecrow signs showed it was no longer sound
scientist stress
his life was a mess
looking for his mind in the lost and found.

raging wind
with deafening sound--
dead telephone
mighty oaks
uprooted now--
traffic jam
a dancing crow
on a broken scarecrow--
celebration time

Everyone wants to be in a flash mob
This statement came from my strange neighbor Bob
I don’t, I said, and neither does my cousin Rob
We do! Said a scarecrow, a rake and a corn cob
caw
scarecrow
stuffed straw
annoying voice
Kansas farm staple
the bird sits on dummy
overlooking sunflowers
nailed to a cheap gallows frame
farmer Jacob’s discarded clothes and straw
Peter makes a scarecrow in the rice field,
Because of fear, the birds avoid the shield,
Paul sets up his own measure,
The better human figure,
The birds return all they've taken from yield.
the little cloth scarecrow was bullied by some
you aren’t a real scarecrow, made him feel glum
He was not made of straw, so they truly made fun.
They were not very nice, these crows out in the sun
pointless
here…there…everywhere
for the birds
the short straw
of the scarecrow

deaf to duty's strain
scarecrow guards the corn field still
a worthy presence
