Why are we such a messy nation?

The Sanitation Department merely manages our waste
It will not teach us to reduce the output (advising, “Eat less!”)
The Health system manages our obesity & diseases;
It will not teach us to prevent diseases, prevent obesity -
(unless it can start another symptoms-managing scheme)
So there is a similarity with health and waste (O crap!)
They are managed by experts, who won’t cure our maladies!

The garbage truck goes by; I flash
To seven years ago.
I’d lift my grandson up and then,
His eager face a’glow…

We’d step outside so he could watch
The sanitation crew
Dump everything recycled
In the truck for it to chew.

The men would wave and we would wait
Until they drove away,
A little part of our routine
On babysitting day.

These days, he barely notices
When pick-up’s taking place,
But I remember and it brings
A smile to light my face....

The White Mare 
the incoming tide made an island out of
the sand bank where I sat, king for a day,
made a crown of coarse grass
but since I only ruled over a few crabs, who
bit my finger when I shook their claws, I
renounced my crown and swam ashore.
Sanitation workers, in blue overalls and
logo, heckled me since I was not like them
and they made fun of my crown.
On an incoming wave a white mare came,
bareback I mounted and gently the horse
trotted amongst the awestruck workers...
