Sunset through the glass

One window shade left open

Letting me look out

To watch the darkness coming

And the fall of one more night...

Pity all of those rest home fellows

Over time all their hunger mellows

Without their dentures in

All their meals will begin

Sipping their soup and slurping Jellos...

we bear the weight then die
upon some cross and enter old age
only to have our socks knocked off by what we see
and then all too often it's a 'rest home' for those of us and you

Swabbing My Nose
Swab
inside
my nose
presses, swirls. Twinges,
twitches, runs like it’s bleeding.
I wait in lobby, till rest home screener
smiles. “Negative! Good to go!”
Grandmother, I only
do this
for
you!...

An Unexpected Shark
You see things at the rest home
you don’t expect to see.
New veteran in his Korea cap is
whipping everyone else in pool.

He never has to bend over
and aim before he shoots.

Mom
Mom got moved to the dementia ward
more one to one
and hands on care
help dressing, help bathing, words to orientate
still sadley
the rest home doors are locked

kid inside me chuckes "She's in lock down"
not that this is funny at all -
but such levity brings a little smile to the room where mom and I sit
and even though
she doesn't understand where my smile comes from
it makes her smile anyway
and the moment
is enjoyed....

My stepdad, stricken with a terrible disease, suffered for over a decade as his mind slowly unraveled. Bits and pieces of it vanished. He had to be removed from the house in which he'd helped Mom raise all of us kids. At the rest home, seeped in dementia and confused by a recent surgery whose aim he could not comprehend, he cried out helplessly, but seeing our mom, he took her hand and gently whispered, "You're the one I've been thinking of."
