The train whistle blew.
It headed for my front door.
I was terrified.
It chased me from room to room.
I hid; it gave up and left.

Recounted and written for the "Tanka me a Dream" contest.
of Babylon it's written
of Rome it is said
of Athen's glory it's recounted
of Egypt's pharaohs long dead
Anaheim's alive
Dallas, dynamic
Phoenix is rising
Portland is panoramic
we pay homage to what was; overlook what glistens, the aerodynamic
Honour is such an intangible thing
That to some people will ring
Down the years in history made
Recounted again in escapades
For wars and battles are fought hard
With many losing in their final yard
But in the end what do you win
Except to wipe out perceived sin.

Donning a vintage coat, boots, hat and all,
the last organ grinder readies his smile,
outside the old age home, heeding love’s call,
to rekindle heart’s joy, for a short while,
triggering memory elders recall,
recounted to young ones, in life’s last mile.
His next stop is for the autistic child,
where he’ll sing songs by God’s angels compiled.
What I loved in my youth, has
been soured by time.
I looked back when I was fare,
and my honey was a dime.
Ice blue eyes cut me deep, and
bled my anger dry.
Twisted knots left behind were
golden locks did die.
Never a dull word, nor
moments unaccounted.
And all the precious memories
are hard to be recounted
However now I ask in prayer a
way to bring her near.
From the depth of hell that
seemed, to burn my darling
dear.
