Being Near You
I cannot be near you.
You look the same.
You behave the same.
But my spirit remembers.
It hunkers down.
It protects itself.
Arms bent above it's head.
It remembers the feeling
of being battered emotionally.
I cannot be near you....

November Snapshots
Cold huddled sparrows
Wear that WTF look
A squirrel drags his tail
Through icy puddles
A rat hunkers down
Behind the barrels
Worms wiggle dance
In November’s no-fly zone
A wet Owl whispers “Phew”
School bus children
Defy the rain drops
A grouchy dog waits
For the mailman
An old woman’s scowl
Frightens the wind

String Haiku
String Haiku Charles Henderson contest
Theme – sea haiku
bare feet sift soft sand
waves whisper foamy secrets
of bright days to come
sand shimmers with shells
waves tumble in unison
on a glistening day
shimmering sundown
a butter sun melts the sky
on a golden beach
sand laden waves
pound craggy sea-crusted rocks
storm sky hunkers low...

Old Tom
Old Tom
I've fed Old Tom
for many years
with never any thanks,
not one meow.
He comes at night
with eyes ablaze.
I crack the door
and slide a tin

like a puck.
He hunkers
on the railing till
I lock up.
Then he pounces.
The tin's a mouse,
you see,
and finally
it's time to eat.
Donal Mahoney...

A Poem To My Friends Outside Africa
I write this poem to you
my friends beyond Africa
do not read them now
I will burn the little script
the smoke of which I burn
shall be carried to you there
by new hurricane Katrina
and Tsunami of the oceans
and by the true spirit of oneness
that you may breathe in
and remember how much I love you
then come and join hearts with me
in free African love style
the love that humanity hunkers for...

Paint Her
There stands the painter upon his hill
His wife is gone but not his skill
On each and every rainy day
He hunkers down for an outdoor stay
A woodpile serves him as his chair
From which he casts his longing stare
Slowly the brush does touch the paint
As he pictures his departed saint
Quickening strokes all each knowing
His eyes now closed the paint a flowing
The colors before him come to life
The strokes reveal his teary wife...
