The Last Weeks of Winter
sun sets
later
temps. hover in forties
rain and snow fall frequently, spring
comes soon
Boldly stepping out of the forties
Got my tude on and wearing my hat
Head held high, nose in the air
Look up!, look out, fifties everywhere
Traditional Sunday lunch
Of a forties child-
Mother's succulent roast beef
With Yorkshire pudding,
Gravy,spuds,carrots,
Cauliflower.
Cheese !
a tapioca pudding
a rose hip relish
toated bread & dripping dips
evaporated
milk with tinned pears
home brewed beer
Cor !

FORTIES PLAYTIME
Hopscotch
with whip and top
or marbles and five stones-
pastimes lost now in memory's
chasm.

A FORTIES CHILDHOOD
Feelings ,then
were not shared but
held back, within.
A reservoir of emotions
controlled, withheld...
until death ,shatters
the dam.
a throwback from the forties
he stands under a streetlight
waiting for the ripper
ripper has spotted him
is not about to lurk tonight
both wise, one horrible
a killer
I am in love with my own art
cartoons painted in neons
that show up under black lights
also in love with music
classical, folk, jazz, seventies,
sixties, forties, gospel.
Can surely remember back in the forties
Female drivers were a real rarity
My sisters took the wheel
So petrified. I squealed
Still remember to this day, it gave me the willies
This is about baseball America's game
Been a fan since the forties, sure isn't the same
The shift, the relievers
The staunch believers
But the game's not the same, whatta shame
How many remember the Katzenjammer kids
A comic strip from the forties when I was a kid
Made me chuckle a bunch
Chomping on Sunday lunch
Their silly antics made me pee in my crib

The forties was a frightening decade in World History
thousands of youths were forced to go to war
to fight the evil that rose in Germany and Italy;
who was the worst dictator Mussolini or Hitler?
The Big Bands of the forties, I loved them all
Glenn Miller, the Dorseys, Arty Shaw and Les Paul
They were so smooth
And quite raucous too
Collected their 78s, I certainly had a ball

A coalminer by trade Norman Cornish*
in his forties achieved his artistic wish
Like Lowry, at the end of his working day
locals&locality depicted in his own stylised way

Richard's namesake Leo played for Les Canadiens
Way back in the forties when their reign didn't end
A magical time
Their reign was sublime
The Rocket, Boom Boom and Beliveau did ascend
Can surely remember way back in the forties
Female drivers were certainly a rarity
When sisters took the wheel
So petrified I squealed
Still remember to this day, it gave me the willies
How many remember the crooners from way back
Frankie Boy, Perry, Der Bingle, and the King, Cole Nat
Little Richard, Deano
They were the cream
Brings tears to my eyes to remember the pack
re-post inspired by both SO &Kims contest
