There Is a Fence In My Bed
A 38th parallel separates our pillows
I try to touch her and she bellows
We are like strangers in our own bed
Help me break the Berlin wall in my bed...

Stretchy Neck
Behold the neck of a giraffe
Long enough to make you laugh
Can stretch over the fence in zoo
To find munchy leaves to chew
Of it's length I'm not even half!...

Time And Ghostly Shadows
rock fence in decay
lost shepherds and green meadows
old cars on freeways

Greener Fields
Over the fence, in greener fields
Taken over by a pack of wolves
You never get the greener grass
You must settle for your own lush field

The Wildflower
Growing along the fence in the dunes.
Tall sea grass, a sandy color.
Vines climb high onto the trees.
Wild, dense, and overgrown.
Proudly standing there.
A wildflower.
Purple bloom.
Thriving.
Strong....

Daffodil Brain
So peculiar
It springs up its head
On late Winter’s bed.
This morning it was
That fence in my hand;
I'm pulling on her
where put upon, few see.
Smart on its petals, color vies,
Look on my form.
I’m run
Into deep yellow madness....

autumn haiku
burnt orange leaves on vines
cover a fence in autumn
spiderweb playground
a rippling field bends
tall cornstalks dance head to head
wild rhythms of fall
eerie sounds at dusk
send a tingling chill of fright
first cat fight of fall
...

The Range
from the highest peak
to the low, cool valley below
stretched out as far as I can see
I ride the range of your love
tumbleweeds blow in the desert wind
monsoons come with lightning and thunder
but consistency and a gentleness
fence in the boundaries of my heart...

Riding Fence In April
The calendar says spring has arrived
through the window the sun shines
Outside the weather does not agree
But I still ride the fence and look through
the narrow slit between my hat and scarf
looking for signs that the world might be changing
I don't think spring in Montana can read...

Chemistry Ii
"Have a toke" ...
what a joke.
There isn't a doobie big enough
that anyone could roll.
"Here, have a sip" ...
Oh yeah, right.
Even a train boxcar full of booze
would only be a blackout ride.
"Wanta a line?" ...
Those poppy fields are way too small
and my soul too immense
to ever fence in my mind.
With my chemistry
there's never enough to fix reality,
so staying connected to the cosmos
is the greatest "high" for me....

Snow Fence In Summer
We are propped
in chanting Indian summer wind,
fixed upon empty ribs
of snow fence
swaying akimbo in afternoon air,
lightly touching
sepia earth.
As I touch you
I am someone else.
A new-dark wind rages
through the open window.
Lying here, we absorb night
suspended
in a high gazebo, unseen fences
pushing backs,
pushing us to one another;
the last harvest wind
jade through hands....

Headless Chicken Serves Two
HEADLESS CHICKEN SERVES TWO
My son and his wife wanted fresh eggs so built a chicken run,
Always into something different that proved productive and fun,
They bought 4 rescue chickens, that each laid an egg a day,
One got brave, stuck head out of fence in an awkward way,
Next day they saw a headless hapless chicken in the pen,
Psychologist's prognosis chicken suicidal, make soup of hen.

A Handful
There was peace
without scapegoats.
It was a monopoly. A prelude to a kiss
of insanity. Unzipped between foibles
and forte lies the sanity.
The path will know the sex
sans flowers.
That was the outer side of
fence in the cattle shed, where
the panther had left the half-chewed
leg of a young girl. The naked
model denies the sanctity
and starts talking aloud about the
flying insects.
It was worthless
the travesty of truth. Everybody
wants a share in mining.
