Ode To Billie Joe Redux
Since Billie Joe jumped off the Tallahatchie bridge
Nothing has been the same up on the Choctaw ridge
Since Bobbie Gentry, it appears
Up and completely disappears
The Mississippi delta has a new drawbridge.

Politick
an old man's mouth
nose dives
the slumping drawbridge
of an flattened fortress
rocketing obscenities fallout
fissioned lips as overtaxed
silkworms labor on
spinning cesium shrouds
to hide our dead
from presidential eyes...

Wales, U.K. 2004
Unguarded by the living now,
The castle stood.
Drawbridge dangling.
Tongued mouth reaching outward.
Crenulations gnawing,
The stark gray sky.
Rime-covered battlements
Coated with gangrenous moss moan.
With a banshee’s howl through apertures
Where archers once stood....

Coup De Coeur
It would never be the same
this heart, aching in the moment,
growing “a la Grinch”,
seeded with a look, a gaze
gossamer, this veil of lust
this gentle coup of crown and throne
this empty castle - drawbridge down.

My Weary Heart
I've built a fortress round my weary heart
which cannot be penetrated by your arrows and darts
the moat around it is frozen to its core
with a no ice skating sign hanging on my front door
your excuses are lame regarding your eminent domain
my drawbridge is now officially closed from all your pain

Lesson
To trust is to risk betrayal
To need is to risk emptiness
To hope is to risk rejection
To feel is pain
Head too busy
Heart too heavy
Skin too thin
Feel too much
Turn away from it all
Pull up the drawbridge
Turn off the lights
Detach and numb
Deny feeling
Reject need
Stifle hope
Trust no one...

The Jester
A Prince of Life,
A Prince of Death,
two courts for him to flee
One horse disappears under a
ransomed moon,
a drawbridge now unseen
Eyes close tight
and turn within,
all royalty disowned
As the King calls once
and the Queen calls twice
—the Jester on the throne

Island Ferry
8:15
The island ferry rumbles at the port
A stream of tourists scramble from the rear
As the sun goes down behind the concrete
Taxi doors glow in colours that can't be
Bought, sold or caught.
8:53
The Oil truck rumbles at the port
A stream of sweat with the change of gear
5 attempts to scramble up the drawbridge
And an empty bottle of beer
Glowing like an emerald on the wall...

Van Gogh Analysed
a drawbridge is seen
a yellow carriage ground
grass so very green
sky and water
blue in a frame of gold
decorate the scene
as if in a dream
a starry night
cypresses over a field of corn
great sunflowers
a symphony of yellow
blue fields
as far as the eye can be seen
exaggerated proportions
bring
intangible thrills
over&over
the stylised brush-work
scene...

Charming
Waiting in the tower high
Within a castle strong
Surrounded by a moat so deep
For her prince to come
Always keep the drawbridge up
The gates closed and bared
Guards to keep the tower safe
The one she never leaves
Many years has she waited
Glazing out over the country wide
Wondering where could he be
And why he is not at her side
Always will she watch and hope
For her prince at last to come
Carry her from her tower high
From the castle strong...

Night People
Neon fingers
banish the remnants of the day
Dustbins loiter ominously
blurry eyed
The Night people slide in between
Sailor doom bewitched by sorceresses
as heckled men face electric spears
Stet the occasion
A drawbridge opens
staining the gangster day
Outstretched palms
preclude the day
Jewelled ghost trains
ordinately take you
further away
Velvet dolls with a brainy side
watch stale commissioners slide
Star clad ingénues infuriated evermore...

Friendships
You are my friend oh man?
And you are my friend oh woman?
Do I drop the drawbridge across the moat?
Or lift I the visor off my visage?
I walk with my heart, I am woman
I work with my head, I am man
I cry when I ought to laugh, teach me to laugh
I laugh when I ought to cry, teach me to cry
Betwixt, friendship will be lessons and lessons,
A marriage of motley opportunities
Look through my window, look through mine,
See the other shades? Smile my friend....

My Medieval Heart
Tonight theres a fortress around my heart,
walling off the hurt that's on the outside,
my heart is once again avoiding the darts,
and wants to gallop off for a solitary ride,
knowing desperately my heart wants to forgive you,
as I slowly swallow my hurtful pride,
hesitantly letting my drawbridge back down,
letting you once again come gallop back inside,
knowing deep down inside you are a danger,
hearing only my own sobbing echoes in my hearts chambers.

I Could Drown
In a boat
Rowing around the moat
Of my family’s latest castle
The one with towers and a flag with a tassel
And it really seems to me a lot of hassle
That the drawbridge is up and not down
The water’s very brown
I could drown
* based on Prince Magnus of Sweden, who nearly drowned during the construction of the castle drawbridge (another time, he allegedly leapt into the moat believing he saw a mermaid).

Emotional Bars
I gathered all of my dreams,
frustrations, wishes, and fears.
And stored them in a tower
guarded by a moat of tears.
Emotional bars won't let
those guarded feelings escape.
And a web of sticky lies
prevents them from taking shape.
Spanning the drawbridge of time;
Hope has built a secret door.
And beyond it lies a path;
that leads me back to before.
But I threw away the key
needed to unlock that door.
I'm locked in a memory,
lost to time forevermore....
