We are Leaves
We are like leaves that fall from trees
As wombs contract with pains of labor
And portraits of heroes are venerated
By those who weathered the storm
It’s proved young Africans are leaves
Leaves that fall but go back not
Leaves that have on destiny- the soil
Season that emerges new leaves grow
But they too shade off and disappear
Like fog in the rising hot sun of the tropics
7-29-2012 Lost in a Dream
Fading out now ,in the cold clear night fall,it's too early to tell,
If the moon will be friendly,in the call of the springtime,
When I can rise, bright eyed to the sunshine,
Tonight I'm lost in a dream I can't find my way out of ,
Gone is the freedom ,that of an open mind.
Running fast through falling rain showers, how long till the clouds dry,
Blue is the sky line,a shade off from the distance in your eyes,
When will you arrive, older now I have less time,
A brush from a tree branch was all but a wake up call,
I must get back home where I belong,
Sitting in the shade of a heatwave, drinking a cool lemonade,
Thinking of nothing, is the find of my mind,
If only I could rest till I sleep to find myself once again,
Left somewhere in my own limelight, stuck in my head,
I 'll find freedom, that of a open mind, tomorrow will be mine.
Things I never thought I'd hear myself say
Back before my kids were born
Why is my toothbrush in the microwave?
And why is my recliner full of corn?
Who put my cell phone in the fish tank?
And why is there butter in my shoe?
I'd often scream "Get the bleach"
When I stuck my finger in their poo
Who left their underwear under my pillow?
And get that lamp shade off of your head
Quit calling your sister an evil troll
And there's no monsters under your bed
Who put the jello in the DVD player?
And no, you're not getting a pet snake
Who put this hot dog under the cushions
Get your sister's hair out of that cake
It doesn't matter what you ask them
The answer is always the same
"I don't know, I didn't do it"
And somehow they're never to blame
