Premium Memberonly one sign they had been there

Supply ships arrived ready to delight the colonists
It was a strange eerie day on Roanoke Island
No colonist ran out to greet them
The ship crews searched for them
They had vanished

The word Croatan was carved into an oak tree
The only indication they had been there at all
No bodies were found, no drag marks
No sign of a struggle
It was a spooky time for the crew

Scarlet Raven

alleyway bandits beat the man till he dropped,
as they were rummaging through his wares —
clad in crimson armor a vigilante appeared,
everywhere — no where like a ghoulish phantom,
one by two till all five lay scattered — splattered,
ripped apart by the golden gauntlets of scarlet,
and then it was gone in the zephyr — like smoke.
a bloody canary singing a lullaby of Roanoke.

Premium MemberThe Dating Joker

A young Tinder pro from Roanoke
on his dates liked to play a big joke.
He would cause women fear.
Meeting them, he’d appear
in disguise as an old, ugly bloke.

Premium MemberA Sailor In Norfolk

A sailor aboard ship in Norfolk
was always quick with a ludicrous joke
Though his humor was lame
he quit the ship to seek fame
Now he's the laughingstock of Roanoke

To Nikki Giovanni

at fifteen
seeing and
listening
to you in
Roanoke, VA
in that moment
I knew that's
what I wanted
to do and your
words elemental
thought-provoking
grounding, energizing,
and at times,
beautifully subtle

and Ms. Giovanni,
if I were a poet
i'd be like you
vocal, strong,
and flying on
wings of freedom

you kidnapped me
that day at Virginia
Western Community
College to take me
on a ride of rhythm
and words -- we
retrieve our blues
back and because
of you I will alwys
remember that
shoulders are for
emergencies only
and will go back
to that blues that
gospel that African
drum in heart and
spirit even while
llistening to rap
music

up up and away
to mars among
the stars and you
shine so bright so
bold every poem
a story told

I Can Only Dream For So Long

When the earth came to me,
I was just a sweet and tender young girl.
Falling in love, in the sweet heart of summer,
always seemed like the right thing.
What I am supposed to do.
What feels right.
To meet him, under the honey dripping palms of Charleston,
or to see him, hiking through the dense jungle of roaring trees in Roanoke.
To smell him
oh boy, that smell,
that sun-ripe, peach marmalade, smell.
Home.
Yet I can only dream of it.
Of his cherry pie like good mornings,
and of his moon glow goodbyes.
I can only dream of his heart,
his smooth,
warm,
heartbeat.
I feel like I could jump rope with his heartbeat keeping perfect rhythm.
Yet I dare to dream.
I dare to feel and to love.
And honey, oh sweet honey, my love, I can only dare to dream of you.
Your perfect head and calloused fingers,
because you,
you are only a dream.
A dream that has yet to come true.

Roanoke

Well and they came by sea in the 17 century. They had the highest of hopes as they did come ashore the wild wood lands. And setting up housekeeping they were in the best of spirits in the beginning. But in need of more supplies, eventually. Some sailed back to England only to return to a great mystery! Roanoke had just disappeared without a trace. Nothing to be found in the whole quiet place. And to their puzzlement no one dared to even conceive what it could have meant. Because Roanoke had just vanished like it was never there. Somebody said, “well the whole blessed colony couldn’t have just disappeared into thin air"! But they did feel something sinister had happened there! And they called it the devil that had stolen Roanoke right out from under them never to be found again.

Croatoan

Whispers in my ear;

The dead wish to live again.

A soft strumming
of worn out strings;

The dead hope to rise.

From coffin nails
to slow exhales,
the living wane
and slowly fail.

I tie my knots,
I lift my sails;

The dead setting off again.

From Roanoke
to Jamestown’s walls,
the sea consumes another soul;

And I’m settling down
on this foreign shore
without a line
to cast back home;

The living dream
of growing old;

The dead remain,
trapped
in rotting bones.

Teach the Children Well

Jesus loves the young people in Zambia.
His message they should hear.
A mission to this country?
This far less to fear.

Roanoke, Zambia news anchors aren't shot
I don't believe there is such a place
Charleston Zambia churches aren't attacked
And parishioners aren't laid to waste.

The children of Zambia need lessons.
From God almighty word
The time is now the land is ripe
The gospel to be heard

Deaths of Two Roanoke Reporters

Deaths of Two Roanoke Reporters

As we progress along but some times precursor
To things happening and then becoming worser
Again, another bad thing just had been done
Reporter and photographer were shot by a handgun.

Not only that, on live TV all of this was reported
A women to be interviewed was being escorted
To a place where there was to be an interview
Which is when a terrible thing they did ensue.

Both by a handgun were completely shot dead
Into there beautiful bodies that bled and bled
No longer alive and never with us ever again
Surely having a handgun is truly such a sin.

From a lot and many I might raise some static
But what if I were to take a huge, big magnet
Have it in a helicopter and then start to swing
Into custody all of the handguns start to bring.

This may all sound completely absurd to you
After all this terror and horror we went through
Many of us still may not know what is best
We are open to anything you have to suggest.
