On the Promenade

On the promenade they stroll,
The Hokas and Adidas,
While in between the pigeons squawk
And what they mean is "Feed us!"

Nikes and New Balance add
To Sunday's march of sneakers,
With Saucony's and OC's on
The feet of mileage seekers.

Some Skechers even make the scene
With Brooks and Reeboks showing;
All of them, at varied paces,
Coming here or going.

Growing up, we all had Keds
Or cheaper imitations.
Nowadays, the choice is vast
To match one's inclinations.

There to Here

From Hip Hop
To hip not
From Brogans, Stacy's, J's, and Reeboks
To Crocs, flip-flops and socks
From wholesome savory dinners with family
To Uber Eats and Doordash alone while scrolling IG

From there to here...
The place we're headed is what I fear

From warm hellos and subtle nods in passing
To silence and cold stares and masking
From brothas asking sistas for their hand for a chivalrous dance
To I don't wanna dance no mo' and no romance
From long walks hand in hand
To text messages neither understands

From there to here...
The place we're headed is what I fear

From wishing upon a star and sailing into another galaxy
To incessantly hide and play under the moon while feeding the monster called 'jealousy.'
From invaluable lap time
To TikTok and blurred FaceTime
From 'Yes Sir' and 'No Ma'am'
To simply, I don't give a _______

From there to here
The place we're headed is what I fear

Y Asi Sucesivamente Y Asi Sucesivamente

snow turns to ice floor
ice skating with reeboks on
she falls and takes me with her out of sheer love
the price we pay are her shoulder and my rear end
we laugh without smiling
i help her with her things and open the SUV door for her
she thanks me kindly and then to work she goes
i slide and glide uphill feeling blessed
after making it back to the house, i look for the heating gel and the heating pad
i then pray for the sun to hit all of the slippery spots this time (knowing it won't)
ferrero rocher and valentines day are both in my mind now
i smile and shake my head....thinking about the future devouring
i go the the garage, oops, i mean STORE-AGE ROOM, to look for the snow shovels
i then wonder if the mailman knocks on our door again if we should start charging for tickets (hmmmmm)
i am ThankFull for what i have while SHE IS HERE
as usual, Joni Mitchell never lies
till tomorrow.......y así sucesivamente y así sucesivamente......

Whittling

The time has finally come, at last,
To start to whittle down the past.
I comb the closets and each drawer
For things I don’t wear anymore.

My tennis shorts for younger thighs;
My Reeboks worn for exercise.
My wide-leg jeans so full and loose
I’d be accused of style abuse.

My denim skirt with matching shirt -
My love for them won’t reassert.
An old wool sweater bound to itch
Now joins the pile I plan to ditch.

I fill a bag to give away
But certain items have to stay
If they don’t make me laugh or cringe.
Oh joy! My t-shirt with the fringe!

What I See In You

What I see in you, there is so much,
     so much positive and good,
I'm wonderin' if you can see the light,
'cause I behold the brightnessof you.

When I see you in your simple life,
    your t-shirt, jeans, and Reeboks,
Turns my head faster than anything,
makes me love you all the more.

Dressin' up is important to me,
    for church, and special occasions,
But I want to see you just as you are,
    unadorned and unashamed.

The first thing I ever saw of you,
    the brightest star I've seen,
Is the shine of your simple smile,
it stopped me in my tracks,
    turned my eyes to you,
    not leaving your side,
Since you first smiled,
my boring, dull life is brightened.
