Sunlight in the Cafeteria - Edward Hopper

sallow confined to the shadow
though his glance reaches across the void
solvent so far in my averted gaze
this man will not stop the sun falling on my face
my air is purified, greyness swerves me
salt cellars absorb his intention
whilst I calculate my route to the door
does he edge towards me?
walls close in, exits recede
the street now menacing
battling my own capacity to be impolite
my posture neutral, uninviting
I cannot assume I am stared at
nor can I carelessly walk out into the back streets
I pray the door revolves and others bustle in
create a moment of escape
it only takes seconds to be engulfed by shadow
this is the time before
where help is surely on the way
the time when I was safe in the sunshine
