Outside my window, the sun smiled.
No sirens screamed and no explosions resounded.
No tearful wails interrupted my serenity.
This, I thought, must be peace -
As long as I ignored the news.
Nobody tore me from my bed,
Bruised my skin,
Nor forced water down my throat.
My human rights, intact -
A privilege of my distance.
Ahhhh!
My cocoa tasted as sweet as my innocence
from the cradle of my recliner.
Why borrow trouble?
Am I my brother’s keeper?
My skin frosted as my heart shivered.
A cold thought formed.
The quote echoed a ghostly reminder from whom that question originated.
A chilling realization that hiding was actively choosing
to raise Cain.
Where was the chaos sown?
Where were the voices stilled?
I must not sit, I must not wait!
Comfort must be sacrificed,
before I also found that I had become the one who was not Abel.
The wind carries on, seeking a peaceful place, to muss hair and raise Cain.
With no friends to meet, it invites the flowers, to scent the summer breeze.
The birds draft its thermals, to far-away places, where sunset calms the wind.
To rest and dream of flight, where the lavender haunts, the windless way.
Then to resume the search, for wild horses' manes, and the whispering pines!
Mother tried to raise Cain,
To carry a righteous name,
But in that he could not abide,
For he lost his soul to homicide.
Abel’s blood was obliviously found,
Staining, calling from God’s Holy ground,
On the beaten path,
Demanding God’s almighty wrath.
God’s mark on Cain’s forehead,
Was worse than being dead,
For it reminded all of when,
Abel was killed because of jealous sin.
Nothing much has changed today,
Men still carry in this way,
Raping and killing,
Because evil souls are willing,
To kill you or me,
For what they want and see,
Brother kills brother,
Sons of our mothers.
Let's go out and frolic in the rain
Shove aside all cares and be vain,
In this stormy night from nothing refrain
Neither cry foul nor complain,
Drench to the core and raise cain,
Clap with the thunder once again
And blaze a trail in the lightning domain,
Drive this sassy storm insane
Within our palms its tears contain--
And then...ha, kiss the rain!
