Chakpii!
Wooo! ! !
We have gathered
On grandfather’s stoneseats
After a hurried meal,
This moonlight...
Assemble, children, and hearken
To the tales we know
And heard from
Our fathers...
Chakpii!
Wooo! ! !
Oruru otu mgbe (Once Upon a Time)
The full moon, naked as birth, stood.
The silent leaves of mother forests
Listened;
All sternness loosened
In the face of the moon...
Conundrums,
Pulses,
Quizzes,
Proverbs...
A parched and famished ground once,
Now elated with
Grown ears; feet below in the
Wondering, dark and lonely soil
Chakpii!
Wooo! ! !
Oruru otu mgbe...
No distinction,
For among kinsmen
A child is the father of a man.
Charged upon native principles,
Conundrums,
Songs,
Quizzes,
Chants,
Oaths,
Verse,
Pulses...
Fortified in sponge-weave,
And voices coming from the one
Gong-hole
Scare
Cultural invasions,
Scientific blackmail,
Traditional irregularities...
Wafting fraternity,
The lunar concern ceases.
But we do not grope
In the dark,
For each eye is the other’s
Lamp.

Oh, Nothing! You sly, elusive spud,
You’re the star of this poem (though technically dud).
You haunt empty fridges, blank quizzes, and minds,
The gap where my keys hide and my weekend plans wind.
You’re the punchline of vacuums, the muse of bare shelves,
The reason I’m talking to lamps by myself.
You’re the “E” in my bank account, crisp and austere,
The punch I forgot in my joke over here.
Some say you’re profound—philosophers swoon,
But let’s be real: you’re a nap’s favorite tune.
You’re the silence between a bad pun and “Huh?”,
The plot of a mime’s TED Talk—oh, brother, enough!
You wear pajamas daily, yet still blend right in,
A champion of naps, but you never quite win.
You’re the cloudless blue sky with no bird, plane, or flair,
The “U up?” text sent to a cactus. Bold. Rare.
So here’s to you, Nothing, you cheeky old void,
The world’s quietest meme, forever deployed.
Though poets may weep for your depth, I insist:
You’re the *something* I missed… wait. Dang. Plot twist!
---
P.S. If you liked this poem, pay me in air.
(It’s fitting, since Nothing and I split despair.)

It has been a long wait,
Longer but reached
The battle that enemy started
Was nailed perpendicularly
With our lovely Princess!
Long, long ago!
A dream was conventional
To quench the burning stick
Nicknamed national quizzes
But resources and timing
Kicked away our fantasy
Though struggled enough
But never fought abundantly
Here came the princess
Erisinta her name
And said Dad don’t worry!
Leave the battle on me
No army is needed
I can conquer all alone
And sent the enemy far
Quash him to death
And that is what she did
A Princess of the Royal Ng’abokwa
A single-digit score,
With lower points than all,
Leveled Chibe and Chinga
Our SPS vanity
This is the real fight,
That my soul dreamed of,
Come and celebrate,
It is our culture to party,
Start mbeta all the way
The best of our tribe dances
Bigha Chimono bigha!
For if you stop dancing
Stones and sand shall!
Glorify our God,
For he has side our fight
Don’t forget the rituals
That bound us with grace
Praise the Almighty!
For His mercy and blessings
Have showered our canopy
Dedication to my Daughter Erica. 27-01-2025

Let me tell you about my experience with autism and ADHD
From moments of forgetfulness and yippee dee
Sorry I lost track now where were we
Oh yes
About autism and ADHD
I see the world in colours
All bright and beautiful
I notice the most annoying sounds
But I could tell you all about musical theatre and other interests of me
Like quizzes and history
Like when they started running the first presidency
It was George Washington then john Adams and the rest is history
But King George did tax there tea
And started a protest called the Boston tea party
Sorry Im going off tract again
But that is what it is like inside my brain
I could run barefoot in the rain
It would not bother me
I enjoy little quirks and moments of hyperactivity
Because its what makes me me

Within the dark mystery of evening,
he listens to two interchangeable discourses
One the gentle persuader, the other, life's ultimate blamer.
Troubled by these seething exchanges,
both conscious and unconscious currents resound,
As the master's inner thoughts boom,
pounding into trails of indecision
with wired quizzes on his mind.
In silence, he weighs dark and light perspectives-
question left unanswered in the din
of reflection,
and through gradual flow of spontaneous musings,
Logic nags his cerebral strains-
scientific, structured assessment of matters which do not really matter...
Somehow, amid the debate where reason pauses with the fragile voice of instinct, the heart remains silent
offering gentle hunches revealing the
wisdom born from honesty, truth...
Slowly, this inner prompting arises
as the master in quiet introspection
realizes: the mind can lie , pride is ego- based ...but the heart, can it in conscience cope with deceit?

Existential Exams
By Mark D. Stucky
Math problems, essay questions,
multiple choice, fill in the blanks…
Many are the tests we take
from grade school through grad school.
We also encounter challenging existential exams,
pop quizzes in the swirling whirlwinds of quotidian life,
tests of character, of the heart, of the soul,
that rarely have quick and easy solutions.
Resembling complex math problems,
they challenge us all to “show our work.”

At the World of Coca Cola
Were mementos by the score,
All of Coke-related products,
Bottles, cans and so much more.
There were posters from the 50’s,
Coke machines and pins and toys
And collectors’ items for the drink
Most everyone enjoys.
After watching little films and
Taking quizzes just for fun,
Our last stop was in the tasting room
Before the tour was done.
There we sampled many flavors
‘Til at last we’d had enough.
I would recommend a visit,
Though I never drink the stuff!

acorn faerie flitted out of the way of the giant tail.
in for a landing came a flying squirrel with a sail.
where did you come from? Asked Cousin Dale.
thought you were in the hoosegow, the county jail.
interested acorn faerie is enthralled. A jailbird!
she has never met one, or gotten to have a word.
she quizzes the squirrel the way cottage cheese follows a curd.
ignoring their protests, as if they have never been heard.

Millions of merry mischievous mice made marmalade mincemeat for miles
Nineteen neckties snagged nimble necessary notetakers’ smiles
Outrageous ostentatious octopuses ogled ordinary octogens.
Private praying piranhas provided persnickety pieces of puns.
Querulous quails qualified quite quietly with quality quizzes.
Renegade ridiculous roosters readily rejected revealing robin's kisses.

Hairline receding slightly
Waistline a little thicker
Gravity winning the battle
A few centimetres conceded
Even when walking proud
Hearing less acute
Necessitating the TV turned up loud
Eyes needing brighter light
Small print now a challenge
A world through four lenses
No longer two, especially at night
Joints a little rustier
Movement less fluid
Skin a little saggier
“Less firm” more polite
Settling in grooves and furrows
No longer snapping back
White and random hair sprouting
On head, from nose, in ears and on chin
The body the battleground scars of advancing years
A war we will never win
The mind and mood another matter
Age the superhero variable
Calmer, more sanguine
Experience and wisdom to the fore
A knowing wink and smile
Having done it, got the t shirt before
Random knowledge twinned with insight
TV quizzes a breeze
Navigating life’s necessary turbulence
With greater confidence and ease
Youth is not to envy
Advancing years we should embrace
The folly of the young
Firmly in the rear view mirror
We stand as time flies past us
Knowing a more contented future awaits

My buddy mistyped ‘high wire walking’
Her error got everyone talking
She merits a spanking
Cos it rhymed with banking
From quizzes Michelle is now baulking!

Capitalization and punctuation are automatic to me.
It is what I was taught years ago, and I cannot break the habit.
Haiku is difficult for others insist on no apostrophes or caps.
It is difficult to unlearn what has been instilled and boy was this instilled.
All of those quizzes and tests, which I thought were a waste of time.
Then I began reading other people’s writings, and I was stunned.
Two, to, and too are incorrectly used so many times; too many times.
I get a sense that apostrophes are thrown in willy-nilly for no good reason.
How many times have I seen it’s when they do not mean it is, rather ownership.
To not capitalize a proper noun infuriates my internal gauges.
I am incensed when punctuation is off kilter also.
Checking and rechecking my own work to an idiotic degree.
I am such a product of the sixties, growing up in the corn state.
The home of the ITBS.
