The Home Goods store is packed with stuff
That no one really needs.
It’s kind of like a garden filled
With bright and cheerful weeds.
You stroll the aisles and start to pluck
Some items from a shelf,
Each one designed to make you buy
A present for yourself.
A fish-shaped plate, a speckled bowl,
Some baskets of bamboo,
Plus pillows, frames and placemats -
All just waiting there for you.
A separate section carries food,
Like chocolates and snacks,
While cards and wrapping paper fill,
With toys, adjoining racks.
Some furniture is worth a look -
A cabinet or chair,
But better snatch it up because
Next week it won’t be there.
It’s fun to spend an hour
In this store, without a doubt,
Though guaranteed you’ll leave with things
You sure could do without.

In Spring
In spring water troughs
fart all the
musical notes, butterflies go to
Collage school, four-leaf clovers babysit
bulldogs, placemats collect bits of
string to
make balls, lichen await letters from
royalty all over
the world, sticks go for
runs, not to
lose weight, but just for
fun.

The Home Goods store sells things you need
And many things you don’t.
Some people buy both types of things,
But others simply won’t.
Their Halloween collection
Is immense and so much fun,
With items meant to bring a smile
To almost everyone.
The pumpkin orange bowls and mugs,
The ghosts and bats and brooms
And witches on the pillows
And stuffed toys for all your rooms.
The towels, sheets and candlesticks,
The platters, streamers, flags,
The placemats on display right near
The trick-or-treating bags.
I know folks like to decorate,
But still I find it *****
To spend so much on things you’ll use
Just one month every year.

Cats, cats do the catnip dance
Watch as they scuttle, and prance
And arch their backs
Cats, cats in their hypnotic trance
Pass out near their placemats
They need more before they play
With their rats

Handprints to this day
Are unique they belong to just one person.
Parents seek to preserve them so they can
Show how little your hand was when you
Were born. They do this in many ways.
Handprints to this day
Are found in plaster casts, necklaces, scarves,
And placemats which are given to relatives
As gifts on Christmas or birthdays.
It is great when you hear a child say the
Special part of the gift was mine no one
Else had it to give. This is true. There's no
Comparison.
Handprints to this day
Are unique they belong to just one person.

I found a fairy tree hotel
In an oak tree that looks like a cactus with
Many homey rooms going up to the top
Branches deep in the forest.
Do tell.
It's definitely a five star. The front door is
Up on the hill away from the wishing well.
I was very impressed.
I found a fairy tree hotel.
The bell hops answer to musical bells.
If you arrive early you get a fantastic
Breakfast that you'll be able to digest.
Do tell.
Oh! By the way they serve real coffee
With every meal all day in a dining
Room that has wallpaper of
Bluebells.
The table cloths, placemats, and
Napkins are all the same blue color
Which matches the China right down
To the bottom with the fairy crest.
I found a fairy tree hotel
I hated to say farewell.
I got the best rest.
Do tell.
It was swell.
To this I can attest
I found a fairy tree hotel.
Do tell.

The sky was yellow, with sparkling beams
in iridescent gold
reflected on the pointed hat
of an elf, two centuries old.
The hostess of the hour was sweet
in a robe of mismatched dyes.
She entertained with merely this--
a kiss in her root beer eyes.
The placemats were of baby fern,
woven in intricate green,
and laughter was heard like the tinkling of bells,
near the banks of an ebony stream.
I boarded a raft for an underground cave,
which was carved in a spiral pattern.
The subterranean symphony hall
was draped in coral satin.
At the end of the course was a water-slide
in hues of ultraviolet,
with children bouncing up and down.
They prevailed upon me to try it.
Though some might want to interpret this,
myself, I'm in no hurry
to analyze such a sweet retreat,
which woke me without a worry.

As I struggle with thoughts about life,
I pack up Christmas items:
(1) Removed Christmas China decorated with holly
(2) Stacked up those gold charger plates now no party
(3) Bagged up the centerpiece, removed green candles
(4) Things beginning to look in shambles
(5) Check those Christmas placemats
(6) Clean spots can tell we are not aristocrats
(7) Fold pine green Damask Tablecloth
(8) The naked table stands like a Behemoth_
Well, in my old age I am beginning to match the table..

For those who say that skill defines the art,
And nothing matters more than perfect form,
I must admit, they conjure up a storm,
That devastates the realm of home and heart.
But from this Devil's eyes I now can see,
The Ear's delightful rapture in the norm,
Because its cadence is so soft and warm,
Arranged so that true grace will always be.
The true intent behind this long debate,
We feel and sometimes know, but will not tell,
And if we stay this path, tis only fate
To dress the placemats of eternal Hell.
Both poets, now together, must create
The dove's embrace, the ringing of the bell.

The Christmas tree stands alone
But still decorated with lights glowing
The family has come and gone
A misty tear drop with a quiet groan
Remembering the days when they were home
The Christmas tree stands alone
Wanting little ones to come and crawl in zone
Of the blanket, packages, and decorations
The family has come and gone
Leftover food, torn wrap, lights that shone
Guiding them to this warm old home
The Christmas tree stands alone
Dirty dishes, soiled placemats, candles blown
Still longing for them at home
The family has come and gone
Time passes, situations change
The love in my heart remains the same
The Christmas tree stands alone
The family has come and gone

All those times she took out her tablecloth and spread it
'O so gently'
kept me coming back.
It was her soup I'd see;
the celery bits I'd act.
A broth to be tapped
of oil not strewn.
As thick as the sun
but thin to the spoon.
With bowls like skirts
defending their space.
On modest placemats
marked for grace.
Down splendored chairs
of darkened walnut
My eyes remember
the meal; the moment.
And on her face
her smile and grace
Remind me of
a better place.
