the wicker picnic
on a red gingham blanket —
dulce fruit draws ants
watermelon sliced —
summer pepo with black seeds
on white paper plates

Watermelons
Dull, thick, green rind with a creamy yellow behind,
From where on the ground, it sat waiting to ripen.
Round the gourd, the melon matured, bursting the gird;
With juicy, sweet liquid, and fresh succulent meat
(Ninety per cent water and six percent sugars)
Ready for consumption in the hot summer weather.
Carefully pick the vegetable from the bin;
Choosing the size, weight, and colour of the pepo.
And feel for firmness, then cradle, knock, and listen;
(Duller the thud the better) indicating ripeness,
Or employ other quirks to determine freshness.
Then wash, slice, and serve the delectable berry,
With bright red flesh, seed or seedless variety.
Etiquette is discarded when eating the melon,
As my teeth sink into Citrullus Lanatus
(Like a hot knife cutting into frozen butter)
As juices spurt out and run down the sides of my mouth,
While I guiltily look, as I piggishly eat
And slurp away, smiling, and spitting out the seeds;
This August 3rd on National Watermelon Day.

Wasema subira yavuta kheri,
Kamba iliyovuta kheri yakatika,
Yakatika na Uzito wa huba, uliojawa na mahaba,
Na safari ya mapenzi, iliyojaza sheheni,
Kwake nimetia Nanga, sihitaji kivuko,
Nasema hivi, Nitaolewa kesho.
Haba na haba hujaza kibaba,
Kibaba kilichosheheni mapenzi ya Dhati,
Moyo ukafurika, kwa pepo za mapenzi yake,
Sihitaji feni zenyu, kwake upepo napata,
Nasema hivi, Nitaolewa kesho.
Safari ndefu ya mapenzi, iliyojawa machafuko,
Chombo alishikilia usukani, captain wa mapenzi,
Zake huba haziyumbishwi, kwa nyangumi au papa,
Nasema hivi, Nitaolewa kesho.
Hayawi hayawini sasa, yamekuwa na kunenepa,
Yanini kukondeana, wakati twashibana,
Sifurukuti hafurukuti, mapenzi Ndiyo nguzo yetu,
Nasema hivi, Nitaolewa kesho.
Yalianza kama chemichemi, sasa yafurika kama bahari,
Ilikuwa ni bahati, kufurika kwake hivi,
MUNGU AKITUJALIA, Hii ya kesho tatimia,
NASEMA HIVI, NITAOLEWA KESHO

Cotton Candy is a pumpkin who
Is known as White Pepo too.
Her nice rounded shell
She keeps very well,
And one day she met Baby Boo.
Baby Boo is quite small, and at night
He might glow, an albino pure white.
He is both good looking
And good at cooking!
He and white Pepo make a rare sight.
Cotton Candy (White Pepo) and he
Got together, and baby made three.
With skin color cream,
The baby’s a dream
And he’s part of the Ghost family.
Like his Mom, maybe better, is he.
Ghost can keep for a long time and be
Just like his Dad too.
Like that small Baby Boo,
In the oven he can bake sweetly.
Another White pumpkin, meanwhile,
In Carol’s patch sat on a pile.
Smooth, round and pure white,
An adorable sight,
Is this pumpkin with decorative style.
Other pumpkins can read this and weep
For Halloween has a new peep!
For MINE, cute and small,
Has the name of Snowball
And clear up to Christmas can keep!

Pumpkin, merry queen of squash,
regnant on accord.
With a smooth and ribb-ed rind
clad in pepo-orange,
two strikes to sever
from the vine.
Gourd!
*Mary, Queen of Scots was beheaded by order of her cousin Queen Elizabeth of England in
1587. Detailed accounts record it took two strikes of the axe to sever her head completely.
**A pumpkin is truly the sovereign of gourd squashes. . Ironically, the word 'gourd' is also a slang
term for 'head' giving this poem a most appropriate ending whichever way you look at it!.
***The word ribb-ed in the third line is read as two syllables.
