Paratroopers stealthily slide unnoticed,
chutes deployed, small blazes of white obscured by
fog that lingers lazily, til their numbers
cover the meadow…
Faster, faster, not just content to cover,
reinforcements filling in, words unspoken,
synchronized with perfect precision, ever
picking up tempo…
Occupation utterly overwhelming,
swamped defenses, raising a flag, surrender.
Long, the arm of conquering winter, brings a
lengthening shadow…

TASMANIAN DEVILS
The house next door
had flames in the windows
We watched from the street as
the firemen arrived, four rigs responding,
Engine Company 5 – The Tasmanian Devils
Engines and ladders, axes and hoses, abundant
testosterone surrounded and entered, laid into
that fire like an infantry platoon doing necessary
work through the hedgerows of France in the
summer of ‘44
“Cute little girl!” said the tall young man as
the water and smoke later sizzled
in the char
Twelve years later, at a different address,
three rigs responding, Tasmanian Devils and a
gasoline smell in the storm sewer system, same
tough young men, little action this time, a band
of paratroopers with no enemy in sight
The tall fire lieutenant remembered my face
but not my new wife and proffered the question
to set memory right
“How’s your little girl?” said the voice of
command with the steely gray eyes
I said “She died a year later!” and he looked through
us both, reached for the catalogue of the suffering he
had seen, shifted his gaze and called out to his men,
mounted his rig and tightened his face, surprised
once again at the number of ways that
a fireman finds death!

I was astounded to find myself teaching paratroopers how to jump.
I honestly have never done this before! I said. My voice sounded whiney.
A plane full of handsome young marines laughed in unison.
The impetuous I needed to wake up. Marines don’t laugh.

Southern Hemisphere
Northern Hemisphere
Like sleeping companions tugging the suns warmth from each other
One hoarding it, one exposed
And leaves quivering like exposed limbs
Until the trees jettison them like paratroopers
Each one swings in the currents chilly
As if held by an oscillating string
A succession of falling pendulums

Jumbled up in the bowls of my brain
Are poetry words that do not rhyme
They take my imagination hostage
But do not let me take my time.
They are creeping out of my dendrite path
Landing fiercely on a virginal page
The white is rapidly filling up with words
From my muse, not the sage.
I can see some landing like paratroopers
And I mavel at their stealth
They are flying from my gray matter
Bringing me emotional health
For when I am in writing world
Which I do for my own sake
It is as if I am gifting myself
A reality-driven break.
Rolling out like thunder now
Words slide upon the paper
Where are they coming from I ask?
But the only thing I see is vapor.
My muse is slick sassy and smart

The Eagle Has LANDED -A TITLE POEM/Free Verse
Theparatroopers safely landed in England,
Eagle were their names in code.
Has not Heinrich Himmler informed us,
Landed in order to kidnap “Sir Winston Churchill”.

"If there ever comes a time
When you forget your dreams
And wonder what there is in life for you to see
And the burden is too heavy for you to float freely
The stars will come to meet you
They will let gravity grab them and become like
paratroopers
Falling to the ground
Blasting holes in your amnesia as they shoot
and making you remember that there are still things
in this life that are worth seeing and experiencing
Even if just for a brief moment"

Turn and Toss
Seventy years ago it had been
When Normandy Invasion we were in
Bombs would explode and bullets flash
And on occasion a plane did crash.
Even a ship sank just off shore
And many will never see anymore
Samuel Chase is name of one ship
Which under water slowly would slip.
Jack Schlegel of 82d was last one out
Still there seemed to be much doubt
As the paratroopers got quite a scare
Looked back and plane exploded in midair.
Boys who were Bedford's both were there
Stories of their deaths many still share
Only eight thousand veterans are left alive
Nearly ten thousand buried who didn't survive.
Those who died are high in heaven now
And still remember their souls somehow
And when we will see every white cross
Dreams always cause us to turn and Toss.

overheard someone quietly frightened
by the stupid ****ing Mayan calendar
ending, someone sold the “apocalypse”
****,
hook
line &
sinker,
who still eats it up, eats it up, eats it up,
regardless of how many scientists you
throw in their face,
regardless of how many ways one might,
to a point of immeasurable exhaustion,
try & dig out all the horrid christian ********
which has been piled on them during their
lifetime,
like sandbags in a war that never existed to begin
with
&
when s/he was nervously talking about it on
this one particular day,
s/he misspoke, calling it the “mime apocalypse,”
wherein, my own mind conjured up something
much more entertaining,
an “apocalypse” which would really
go out with a whimper,
rather than a bang,
like a needle dropped from the tallest skyscraper
& then
subsequently
echoing on the
pavement below,
to drown out even the faintest of whispers,
as the mimes
invading the world by the billions,
came falling themselves
as mime paratroopers
to climb invisible walls,
pull invisible ropes,
shoot invisible guns &
juggle invisible
grenades,
pushing the lot of us to a truly blissful
point of absurdity.

To the Build-A-Bear Store
With granny in tow
Do you remember?
What was you four?
Say you remember
Only one or two
Well maybe three
Still sitting upon
Granny's knee
When we opened
The door to
The place
Why it was a
Virtual zoo
Animals wasting
To be filled
Waiting to be glued(sewn)
First you
Had to put a
Heart from
The very start
Then you
Pressed the
Button and
Filled the
Animal with
Stuffing
Then she
Sewed him
Shut
But he had
No clothes
You got
To pick them
Out from
500 different ones
You picked
A camoflauged
Paratroopers
Outfit just
For your
Beautiful
Green frog
Which you
Named
Turtle
I remember
Too

Comments: I wanted to be an air force fighter pilot when I inquired into joining
ROTC in college. I didn't have 20/20 vision at the time so I could not. So guess
what? I became a hard-charging paratrooper! Since they would not let me fly, I
made the decision to jump from a perfectly good airplane while in flight.
LOL!!! “Airborne—All The Way.” “Then Some!” Ahhh!!!
