You’re taking a stroll (more like speed walking) down the street,
And if you’re anything like me,
You’ll most likely trip on thin air
And bam, you’ve fractured your leg
(No, I’n not an anorexic with osteoporosis)
As it is with accidents, so it is with love.
Just as you may fall and hurt yourself on a run,
Getting hurt is part of the deal when you sign up for intimacy.
You’ll hurt people you love, and they’ll hurt you too.
And before you know it,
They become a language you are no longer fluent in, but still remember how to read.
(I’m talking about you Sanskrit)
It doesn’t take being a doctor to know, that wounds take time to heal.
Broken bones and broken hearts are akin.
In the meantime, how do you hold on to the hope that you’ll run again after a fractured leg?
What if you’re left with a permanent limp instead?
A haunting reminder of only what was, every time you take a step.
Some call it courage, and others a fool’s venture,
The cycle of rupture and repair ensues,
Time begins to work its magic,
Limp as you may,
You’ll muster strength to take a stroll once again.

Time took a running start and kicked me in the back
Breaking my C-2 Vertebrae. No biggie.
I have had worse. I take a swig on my cig.
Neck brace? Sure. Why not?
Time slams a Chevy into the back of my car.
Breaking numbers six and seven in my back.
Time is kicking my ass this month I guess.
Luckily, my neck is already broken, so win-win for me.
Time gives me osteoporosis and shingles.
Two things I never realized I needed.
The benefits and joys of being seventy.
Come get me time. Give me your next best shot.

My bones are old, so I’ve been told;
It’s osteoporosis.
Accepting that if I go splat
I’m done – that’s the prognosis.
So when it’s cold, I’m not so bold
To walk if streets are icy.
One little slip may crack my hip;
To chance it might be dicey.
And so today, I had to weigh
Conditions ‘fore my journey
Or I’d go whoosh, land on my tush
And end up on a gurney.
My normal route I was astute
Enough to see could trip me
So I took stock and ‘round the block
I walked and I was slip-free.
When I was young, I must have clung
To thoughts of never aging
But now, alas, I watch my ass
And every step I’m gauging.

Granny had osteoporosis
Her bones were brittle
They broke without her even
Falling down or touching something
She was always the one
Taking care of her family
Alive with encouragement
And wisdom that never failed
It came to the point in her life
When she had to have help
To go to the bathroom or take
A shower – even get dressed
Mama fed her favorite foods
Biscuits and gravy, fruit
The things she’d always known
Freshly grown and canned by her hands
Granny was nearly blind
She always sat in the same place
Waiting for her time
She was 89 that year
When her breathing stopped
And she left for her journey
To heaven – I cried for my loss
Because she was better off
Jesus came to get her

My bone crumbles
Osteoporosis to blame
if bones should crumble then I'll take tumbles
and life won’t be the same
eating calcium rich cheese, so Doc will be pleased
Stilton ~ Cheddar ~ Brie… calcium rich guarantees
no longer are my bones diseased
Cholesterol high ~ statins no cheese ~ Doc grumbles

A septuaginarian?! -- He doesn't look a day over 45
~ But he's wracked with pain
He hasn't changed a bit since we were in college
~ So what? His feet are on fire 24/7
Look! He has a full head of dark brown hair
~ Yeah, and he can't walk from here to the end of the block
But he's so well preserved for his age
~ Ha! Have you seen him try to navigate stairs?
I'll bet he still fits into his graduation suit
~ He sure does: Osteoporosis has hollowed out his bones
You know, they say that you're only as old as you feel
~ That's true: He's old, he feels...

Osteoporosis, spinal stenosis
halitosis, that's the grossest
Hemorrhoids, hypo hyper thyroids
gallbladder removal will leave a void
Arthritis, pyelonephritis, gingivitis
we will survive in spite of these
Toe fungus will not be the death of us
its' cure you will ask what was all the fuss
Crooked toes, snotty nose, itchy down below
Pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, myocarditis
cannot frighten us, though impotence might
and possibly to a womans' delight
on not
Torn rotator cuff, oral cancer from rubbing snuff
COPD will make you huff and puff
Diminished brain, malfunctioning drains
generalized aches and pains
of these we are not deprived
BUT, it's still awesome to be alive

Kept in a bowl
Muscles attached to skin
With minimal control
We move a bit if we swim
It's important we keep our organs in line
Lungs, heart and intestines
Once I. Had an ovary move out of place
I knew because it floated right by my face
We breathe and we survive
We eat and even poop
Not much quality in our lives
As human soup
Osteoporosis, if only we'd known,
Would leave us as puddles,
How I miss my lovely bones

Genetic Lottery Wheel
Playing the genetic lottery wheel taking another spin
Hoping it will pass me by but I always seem to win
Placed around the wheel various illnesses and diseases
Addictions, mood swings or joints that ache or freezes
Diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis
Thank God I haven’t hit the one with tuberculous
Just the other day I was lucky to hit fibromyalgia
On the genetic wheel even has a place for nostalgia
I know this isn’t an illness or disease but cruelty I believe
They give you a quick glance back on how it use to be
The wheel keeps growing and more is added each day
But everyone has their own wheel with its own display
We can’t choose if we win or lose or what we will get
But maybe you will be lucky and hit the flu or night sweats
Good Luck!!

Osteoporosis?
Or just because he's forever bending over
picking up stuff
stuff to stuff in the bag slung over one shoulder
He has a slight limp
perhaps from the weight of the bag
the bag always slung over the same shoulder
For sure it doesn't slow him down
doesn't slow that steady gait
always moving downtown
No he's moving moving moving
Merchants don't want him around
"Bad for business" they say
I wonder where the hang stops hanging
where the hanging hangs around
wonder if he has a tree with hangings?
Here he comes
as usual hung over the pavement
like an ornament on the hood of a car
And as usual
he's moving moving moving
I wonder if the merchants know it's Christmas?
