An adventure with a friend in the Fall of 2019 became a celebration in the Winter of 2020. We departed Northern California and headed East beyond the Great Divide, beyond which there lies a city of a Plains State. For him, it was an adventure of a lifetime involving some 3600 miles and being seated among some 70,000 plus fans reported to be the loudest in America. The people there love their game, and there is absolutely nothing tame about the fans.

I am not superstitious and do not believe in magic, but I do believe in timing. I believe in timing because there seems to be times when the coordinates of destiny coinsides with the coordinates of providence. And when they do, it feels like magic. Moreover, I believe in momentum and playing in 'the zone'. These are inexplainable moments when 'I can win' takes over the throne and 'defeat' no longer resides within me.

It's been said that there is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come. My friend's time had come and this adventure with my friend was not a world changer nor a cure for cancer, but to my friend, it was far from trivial.
Edwin officiates soccer games, but his passion is for his favorite football team.

When he was very young my friend became an avid fan of a sports team far across the country from his hometown. Until last fall, he could never go to a live game but followed them on television. He followed them throughout his life, sharing in their thrills of victory and in their agonies of defeat.

His team had its winning ways, but it would often rain on their parades. They would win a lot of games but often fell short at the end of the season. That is, until the end of the season in 2020 when their agonies ended and their greatest thrill in 50 years began. They won the biggest game in football called The Super Bowl. I tell you, it was a magical season for my friend and his team, and I cannot remember when I have been more happier for a friend.

The Marathon Man

I had a friend who was to me
the very best a friend can be,
so loyal, warm and humorous,
a Cornish Celt to truly trust.

I see him now with smiling face,
so strong and fit to win the race,
the problems in our working days
diminished by his winning ways.

An educator, kind and caring,
valued knowledge always sharing
with all his students, most who knew
here was a teacher fair and true.

His talent was to harmonize
some fun and knowledge in their eyes,
humanity and Science combined
within his teaching, firm but kind.

And to his colleagues straight and true,
courageously expressed his view.
his pride of birth-right without rant
or bigoted degrading cant

Accepted without prejudice
what lesser men turn into vice.
so many warmed towards this man,
enchanted by the charm he span

And partnered by his loving wife
he welcomed friends into his life.
their table had the best of fare
for this man had a talent rare,

His cooking skills so finely honed
that many a chef could be dethroned
so proud my wife and I would be
when welcomed to their sanctuary.

Through working days a course we ran
deriving strength to carry on,
his wise words guided me to see
the best time when we both broke free

Work routine however worthy
never matching freedom’s journey,
Both found ourselves two new careers
though did not have close friendships cheer.

Then circumstances and neglect
reduced our contact and respect
and though we met from time to time
our friendship suffered a decline

I never thought the steps of time
approaching swiftly from behind
would overtake him in life’s race
and sickness claimed such strength and grace.

I'm one of many, this I know,
and not alone to miss him so,
but I've no faith to ease the strife
with promises of afterlife.

Of him past memories all that’s left
now I am of my friend bereft
with life a sadder, bleaker place
never again to see his face.

When Bobby was just nine years old,
		folks loved his winning ways.
		He was a little gentleman
		deserving of their praise.

His helpful nature and big smile
		were natural, they knew.
His family was proud of him.
		Life bore a rosy hue.

At school and on the baseball field,
		on Boy Scout projects too,
though Bobby was a shining star,
		his ego never grew.

		Then Bobby changed dramatically
		when he became a teen.
		Out came a taunting arrogance
		no one had ever seen.

		The center of attention still--
		at his insistence then--
		he bragged on his accomplishments,
		how great he'd always been.

		He ridiculed some other teens,
		"The losers," in his words,
"the clumsy oafs who stink at sports,
		the dummies, and the nerds."

He soon was sharing center stage
		with others who, like him,
		enjoyed attention--good or bad--
		and acting out on whim.

Then one day his comeuppance came
when his school's team had won
the championship and he was high
		on praise and having fun.

		He took the credit--no surprise!
But soon the tongues would wag.
He meant to say, "No brag; just fact!"
He said, "No fact; just brag"!

The "oafs" and "nerds" laughed in his face.
		The "dummies" yelled, "That's right!"
His dumbstruck fans just stared at him,
		now a pathetic sight!

		   *******************
		May centers of attention learn
		that positive is best--
		which honest, humble people earn,
		eschewing all the rest.

Nature of the Beast

Powerful and prosperous, all laws are far from his sight.
With pride, he boasts of victory and valour in the fight.
His winning ways, captures his victim's heart and mind.
Whilst vilifying the peacemaker, the humble and the kind.

Under a flag of truth, he crusades against an evil of his own design.
The architect of our destruction, the silent facilitator of our crime.
With secret office in opposing camps, he orchestrates for war.
Born in chaos, his remedies lie in the shackles of draconian law.

In arrogance and conceit, he hunts defenceless souls lost of care.
Set on capturing the weak, tempting the innocent and unaware.
With hidden hand and watchful eye, he lies concealed in wait.
Lurking as a lion in ambush, set to pounce upon the taken bait.

A mystic fellowship of secret schemes and symbols of devise.
A silver tongue, that speaks of gold, fluent in half-truths and lies.
Recited oaths exact their free volition, chaining them to his mark.
While temporal gifts of power and wealth, lead only to places dark.

Bleached in the light of charity, he is hallowed and hailed by all.
Loudly he boasts of his hearts cravings, emptied lives are his call.
Under his authority all collapse, drowned by his power and might.
Love is lost, the spirit forsaken, laud the dark usurper of the light.

To those gentle and kind, invited to partake in his benevolent feast.
Listen to the heart for it will silently reveal, the nature of the beast.

The Might of a Carrier Pigeon In a Shopping Basket Plane

A cat attempting a headstand is akin to a gridlocked caterpillar visiting an air show of duck aero gliders. Aero gliders are neither glimpsing nor glimmering but glimmering could often be mistaken for a cider walking mildew headed bullock whose field antics were superfluous in the season of dun dun dun. But a dun dun dun is neither a worry nor a weasel waiting. Weasels wisely waiting wanting winning ways. And a dish of cloud is served on a rock to a cup of salt water lake spray. Lovely. And how very kind. It is to be assumed that there are a significant amount of ever increasing formations of swamps and strips of sunlit streams. Uninvited are the dwellers of infrastructure whose intelligence only works in a money bag with five golden balls. Interesting that isn't it? Ok then. Eat a spoon of rice and sit down. Oh look a carriage is catching a chubby carthorse today! Oh no a wardrobe has collapsed after attempting to juggle socks while jumping on a pogo stick. Angel's Wings

The days, the weeks, the months have passed
It’s now almost two years
I thought that time was meant to heal my pain
And dry my tears
Instead my days are twice as long
My nights still hard to bear
My life is just a passing phase
My world without a care
I cannot still the voice inside me
Calling out for you
For all I ever wanted
For all I ever knew
The winds of change keep blowing
Trying to set me free
But they don't understand
With you is where I need to be
I close my eyes, and there you stand
I watch you for a while
Your handsome face, your winning ways
Your famous carefree smile
You were the breath I breathe
You were the blood that runs my vein
Without you I will die
For you’re the medicine for my pain
So how do I move on
When I still can't find my way
How do I forget
And say goodbye to yesterday
I need to know you’re with me
In everything I do
Everywhere I go
I need to know that you’re there too
So stay with me so I can face
Whatever tomorrow brings
Until it’s time for me to fly to you
With Angels wings..

The Blackness

From the time of the beginning
A blackness there has been
And though he sits there grinning
He can’t be touched or seen

A taste he’ll place upon your tongue
Sweet words he’ll whisper in your ear
And even though you know it’s wrong
You’ll sink before his scent in fear

He’s everywhere and nowhere
His art is finely tuned
He’ll choose his prey with utmost care
And then the prey is doomed

In the shadows he’ll be waiting
Temptation in his hand
A picture he’ll be painting
In the minds of the damned

He’s practise in his winning ways
He binds you in his spell
And then the soul of he who plays
Is on the road to hell

His aim, an army is to gather
Of bandits, tykes and ghouls
Wild eyed and whetted lips a lather
To reign on witless fools

And a message he sends out
Upon the slightest breeze
To those so full of doubt
That light nor dark can’t please

To the hunted, he says hide
For the hunter he has freed
Feel the hunter at your side
To fulfil his darkest need

Olympic Silver Medallist

Start

This 21-year old girl, Sindhu
From the land of the Hindu
Set the badminton court on fire
Her opponents in a quagmire

The shuttle flew like a bird
Dropped without being heard
In the other corner of the court
Giving no chance to retort

She wove magic in her game
In her quest for universal fame
As adversaries surrendered by the way
She strode like a colossus each day

Her delicate drop-shots caressed the net
Gives her a sure point you can bet
Her vicious smashes pierce the court
The only defense is to build a fort

A prodigy like her is rarely born
Whom the entire country might adorn
An analysis of her winning ways
Suggest only resolute mind and effort pays

The Olympic medal she has won
Has brought cheers to everyone
All fans are saying in one voice
“CHAK DE INDIA”, she’s our choice
