The neural spark
is ill-defined, a cloud of unknowing.
Nothing begins anywhere.
The tail of the snake
is its neck.
The body grows out of its closed eyes.
An uncertain vapor trail
sheds hieroglyphic fragments,
they could be words,
or only
the residual cooling of a brief potency,
a fast-evaporating speculation
now only a dilatorily dripping
from its dormant inkwell.
You don't know, you just don't get it,
until it takes shape,
then a flint strikes a low adumbrate sky,
only then does meaning arrive
to burn your tongue.
You, (this is your part),
with have to make changes,
fillet out the serpent's pin-bones,
or words will stick in your mouth.
This is how a poem begins.
This is how a poem begins,
not with a thought or a whisper
but with a sly electric slither.
I lay on the dry silken grass.
Tall thin reeds hide the sun,
but not the deep blue sky.
I watch the woollen clouds
chasing each other,
feel the soothing breeze,
listen to where the waters meet.
The river flows, a soothing strain,
sonority unrestrained.
Lethargy grips my soul.
I am loathe to move,
I lay supine, quiescent
like a stick in the mud.
Forget the week's travails.
Little did I dream that
just round the bend
you too were resting all alone.
We could have met,
and lay together, hearts entwined.
Would you have crowned my bliss?
Where you really there?
At last I wake and walk around the bend,
only to find that you were gone.
Sometimes successes come easy
Wins effortlessly landing in our lap
Other times it’s an endless struggle
Feeling stuck in a never ending trap
Comfortable to keep on keeping on
Wishing circumstances improve
Too scary to think about changing
So just stick in the same ol' groove
But courage beginning to bubble up
Readying to break free from our rut
Know once we finally figure things out
No one can stop us when we strut
We willingly walk through the darkness
In order to blissfully bask in the glory
Confidently coming out the other side
Ready to write the next chapter in our story
Don't know about you but I love to sneeze
A good one will bring me down to my knees
Blasting my head right off of my neck
A feeling that makes me an absolute wreck
Shivering on down to my little ole toes
You certainly must know how that all goes
Feels so damn sexy I might hasten to add
A sensation that drives me totally mad
Sure rather sneeze than peel potatoes
Prefer sneezing to playing with Play-Doh
Nicer than poking a sharp stick in my eye
Not quite as painful as a dart in my thigh
Imagine your hoo-ha being caught in a vice
Can't be very pleasant, sure can't be nice
Wanna sneeze till I'm rolling on the floor
Gimme that feeling, want more, more, more
But don't tell my friends I beg of you please
Kinda embarrassed about loving to sneeze

A poem penned in '61; loved by all, a favourite of mine
Performed by Bella, my sweetest grandchild, when at the tender age of nine
Draped head to toe in a purple shawl, with a purple hat plonked on her head
Stance bent forward, stick in hand; gazing in wonderment laughter tears I shed
For Bella parodies the art of growing old when she performs this hilarious skit
Her favourite part as she makes a start is reciting the line, ‘and I learn to spit’
With great aplomb her head held back she aims towards the sky
Holding her breath to gain her momentum spurting her spittle way up high…

You see there's a nice man.
He's Mister Ice Man.
And Mister Ice Man.
Skates on a hockey team.
Mister Ice man.
Hockey stick in hand.
And Mister Ice Man.
Do the best you can.
Just slap that hockey puck.
Show your golden luck.
Your hockey team.
They're always on the scene.
Your hockey team.
They're skating in between.
Mister Ice Man.
You're a nice man.
Mister Ice Man.
You do the best you can.
Mister Ice man.
Hockey stick in hand.
Mister Ice Man.
You do the best you can.
So just take a second chance.
Try a second glance.
Slap that hockey puck.
All across the floor.
You see, Mister Ice man.
You're a nice man.
You see, Mister Ice man.
You do the best you can.
Mister Ice man.
Such a nice man.
Just do the best you can..

You weren't by my side
Subside from the inside
I've become so numb
Succumbing to the feeling of coke and rum
Who knew I’ll end up with you with regret
I'm not done with you yet, my darkened outlet
It's like a suicide drink
I sink while I think
I puke out the lies
Never wanted your goodbyes
I've become done with you
All the stuff you put me through
Screw all your intentions
I'm making my own inventions
We are sick (in our blood)
But we love it
You're like a stick (in the mud)
You're so full of it
I've become undone
When I think of you
And all the things you've done
So out of the blue
Who knew I’ll end up with you with regret
I'm not done with you yet, my darkened outlet
It's like a suicide drink
I sink while I think
I puke out the lies
Never wanted your goodbyes
I've become done with you
All the stuff you put me through
Screw all your intentions
I'm making my own inventions
We are sick (in our blood)
But we love it
You're like a stick (in the mud)
You're so full of it
Truth will set you free
You've heard it a thousand times
Envy will be your captivity
You rust in the water like dimes
Who knew I’ll end up with you with regret
I'm not done with you yet, my darkened outlet
It's like a suicide drink
I sink while I think
I puke out the lies
Never wanted your goodbyes
I've become done with you
All the stuff you put me through
Screw all your intentions
I'm making my own inventions
We are sick (in our blood)
But we love it
You're like a stick (in the mud)
You're so full of it
Relieve the sorrow
There's another tomorrow
Jealousy wears off
I think I've had enough
You disguise as happiness
You reduce me to madness
Sad to see you've gone
But, I’m moving on
Because I'm done
Douglas T. Winkle,
Wasn't wrapped too tight;
He escaped from Dizzy Acres,
One cold November night
He raced to Harper's Farm,
Opened its massive gates;
Turkeys scattered to and fro,
Flooding the interstate!
He stripped down to his boxers,
Wielding a stick in hand;
Danced around in circles,
Like the leader of a band
"Go, my feathered friends!!"
Douglas screamed with glee;
"No more turkey casseroles!!"
"Upon this day, you're free!!"
Traffic stacked for miles,
Invading the peaceful town;
Every, tom, chick, and hen;
Was running 'round and 'round!
The dust began to settle,
Law enforcement gained control;
And when they captured Douglas,
They took pity on his soul
Cozy in a padded cell,
His torture met its end;
They gave him an ugly turkey,
For comfort as a friend
Take a trip to Dizzy Acres,
Peek in room thirty-three;
It's the REAL dumb and dumber,
Oh, what a sight to see!
Why does love always feel like a stick in my eye
When I constantly reach for the sky
Looking for the answers why
It's kicking my butt and leaves
An empty feeling in my gut
Instead of chasing woman like a rutting buck
I always get stuck with the ones
That want to run amuck
I have no luck even sold my truck
Thinking that love has struck
Instead, I got smacked around like a hockey puck
Talk about a man with bad luck
I try to stay as far away
From that kind of women who plays that way
But they always seem to latch on to me
I'm so lonely I just want to be happy and free
Have a life full of mystery
A love that makes life snug as a lug
Not one you can stomp on like a bug
Or one you can just sweep under the rug
I need to change my ways
So I can find a woman who doesn't play that way
It seems like they all know what to say
Before I know it I'm saying goodbye
Because it just feels like another stick in my eye
No matter how hard I try
Oh lord why does this keep happening to me
I pray you bring love my way today
That will make my life as it should be
With a wonderful woman beside me
We are primates, one and all
And our heritage is not from the fall.
The primate group is where we’re from
And no matter how far we’ve come
We owe our past through ties of time
And that’s the purpose of this rhyme.
We are a great ape, just like the rest
While some people think we are the best
We share certain traits with others like us
And shows the relationship without a fuss.
With tailless primates, the great apes all
Four Genera of Hominids, but only we stand tall.
But interestingly enough, other Genera are less succinct
Each have two species, reproductively distinct.
Of the chimps, Pan, bonobos in a seemingly fright
Use sex to settle things rather than fight.
The common chimp will settle things
With a stick in hand, that it brings.
Of the Gorilla group, peaceful eaters of fruit, leaf and seed
Just look somewhat different although they can all breed.
There are also some differences in the sounds that they make
As well as the chest beating of which both species partake.
Then Pongo, we have, the oddest of all
On Borneo, sometimes, they descend and stand tall.
But mostly alike with some minor differences in hair
The fascinating thing is the flange that some males bear.
We’re not really sure what the flange is for
But it seems to play a role in sex, we’re almost sure.
One male in an area will develop this trait
And it will seal other males’ reproductive fate.
But given the circumstances, if the situation has need
Any male can develop this structure and breed.
And then we have us, of *****descent
The only naked ape, fully walking not bent.
No others survived, it’s rather quite grim
We are the end of our evolutionary tree limb.
But what separates the monkey from the ape line
Is that monkeys have tails but apes lack this vine.
And in general apes have a bit of the size
In spite of the fact that we lack that tail prize.
The only naked ape, fully walking not bent.
No others survived, it’s rather quite grim
We are the end of our evolutionary tree limb.
But what separates the monkey from the ape line
Is that monkeys have tails but apes lack this vine.
And in general apes have a bit of the size
