Welcome, Summer
by Geoffrey Chaucer
loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch
Now welcome, Summer, with your sun so soft,
since you’ve banished Winter with her icy weather
and driven away her long nights’ frosts.
Saint Valentine, in the heavens aloft,
the songbirds sing your praises together!
Now welcome, Summer, with your sun so soft,
since you’ve banished Winter with her icy weather.
We have good cause to rejoice, not to scoff,
since love’s in the air, and also in the heather,
whenever we find such blissful warmth, together.
Now welcome, Summer, with your sun so soft,
since you’ve banished Winter with her icy weather
and driven away her long nights’ frosts.
Whoso List to Hunt
by Sir Thomas Wyatt
loose translation/interpretation/modernization by Michael R. Burch
Whoever longs to hunt, I know the deer;
but as for me, alas!, I may no more.
This vain pursuit has left me so bone-sore
I'm one of those who falters, at the rear.
Yet friend, how can I draw my anguished mind
away from the doe? Thus, as she flees before
me, fainting I follow. I must leave off, therefore,
since in a net I seek to hold the wind.
Whoever seeks her out, I relieve of any doubt,
that he, like me, must spend his time in vain.
For graven with diamonds, set in letters plain,
these words appear, her fair neck ringed about:
"Touch me not, for Caesar's I am,
And wild to hold, though I seem tame."
Brut
by Layamon, circa 1100 AD, an excerpt
loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch
Now he stands on a hill overlooking the Avon,
seeing steel fishes girded with swords in the stream,
their swimming days done,
their scales a-gleam like gold-plated shields,
their fish-spines floating like shattered spears.
If you see a busker singing for tips, you're seeing someone carrying on an Anglo-Saxon tradition that goes back to the days of Beowulf …
He sits with his harp at his thane's feet,
Earning his hire, his rewards of rings,
Sweeping the strings with his skillful nail;
Hall-thanes smile at the sweet song he sings.
—"Fortunes of Men" loose translation by Michael R. Burch

Hot Child In The Urban Summer Dwelling
A Poem by Debbie_Philly
" Poem about the heat in the city ....;) "
Hot Child In the Summer Urban Dwelling
The city streets are buckling under the sticky smoldering heat.
Urban life at this moment can be so draining while tensions are
high. People stop, wipe the sweat from their brow as they attempt
to inhale and breathe. "Hey I heard that wheeze from across the street Tony".
Heat choking the life out of us like a looming marauding monster.
Beads drip from angry faces while tempers flare, sirens roar in a city
of despair. Yes Will Smith's song "Summer Time" and the spark of
nostalgia from BBQ's help but its still Spring.
If you have the money you can take a drive down the Jersey shore
or to the Poconos cooling peaks.
A place to breath without choking pollution, heat advisory's and the smells of
unidentified unknown origins. Don't get me wrong there are allot of redeeming
qualities of summer in the city too.
Dinning alfresco, summer concerts, water ice, open fire plugs, Mister Softy
and block parties. Small reliefs of the constant three wheelers screeching
down the Blvd, fighting neighbors, and relentless dripping humidity.
As they say here on the east coast "If it weren't for the humidity I
wouldn't mind the heat". Sure you wouldn't ( wink)
Windows opened as the baby across the alley way cries and the guy
next door yells at his girlfriend while she fires back screaming
like a fish wife. The poor are getting their relief from a rubber hose
spraying water and the rich are relaxing in the Hamptons. Well I guess
if I had it like that I would enjoy it as well, then again I more
likely would open a home for battered women and children, build the
pool there. **** how I wish I had it like that.
I suppose theres no sense in complaining about the heat, just write
it out the best way I know how to deal. So excuse me while I leave
you now to step onto cool tiles of the tub, turn on the crystal clear
water and wash the clammy sticky heat down the drain. Into the Delaware
river of redemption as I take my sixth shower of the day (wink) .

Summer days are coming
To take you in my arms
In summer nights, we shall be
Singing our love songs.
When the Moonlight would rise
The sleeping waves of Sea
And your sweet arms would be
Encircling me close to thee.
Summer days are coming
To take you in my arms
In Summer nights, we shall be
Singing our love songs.
I know why you watch
The Sea waves rising to kiss
When the Moon began to pour
Its love drops on the Sea.
Watching the joy of Sea waves
You always come in mood
And then like the rainy clouds
You shower your love on me.
Summer days are coming
To take you in my arms
In summer nights, we shall be
Singing our love songs.
O’ Darling I am waiting
For the Summer days to come
As in summer days you shower
Your rain like love on me.
Summer days are coming
To take you in my arms
In summer nights, we would be
Singing our love songs.

Summer Hit Parade
Here comes summer -
In the good old summertime –
In those lazy, hazy, crazy days -
A summer breeze blows through my mind –
The scent of jasmine – summer mood
On summer nights –
“Oh – oh - oh!”
Slammin” the screen door
When elephants play on the lawn
“Doot, doot, doot – out my back door”
No summertime blues –
Hot and gritty –
When summer comes to the city
Staying cool up on the roof
On the blue lagoon – in the boondocks –
Fishin’ in the dark – crusin’ on warm summer nights -
Or on the boardwalk,
Like Ipanema,
“Down by the sea”
Girls in itsy bitsy teeny polkadot bikinis
For boys of summer
Surfer girls – beach boys driving woodies –
Summer girls - surf and sand – barefoot blue jean night –
Surfin’ in the USA –
Love letters in the sand – barefootin’ -
Suntan cream – building sand castles for
A summer place –
Warm summer mood -
Drinking slowly the summer wine
“Wella, wella, wella, wella!”
Living’s easy on the summer side of life –
“Tell me more! Tell me more!”
Hot fun in the summer sun
“Sum – sum – sum –sum – sum- sum - summertime”
Cooled by the summer wind –
“Sing along with us –de-de-de-de-de-de!”
“Come and sing with me! Da-da-da-da-da-da!”
And when the summer rain beats upon my windowpane
I’ll remember you
All summer long – the long, hot, summer -
Even as I see you in September
Suddenly last summer a summer song –
Summer love - my sweetheart of summer.
All summer long makes me feel fine! Summertime! “Whoa–oh –oh!” “Do-wah!”
Wet nights, warm days are what we want in the summer noosphere.
Man's mind one with weather.
If this is true, life is good, or will be good.
Can I be encouraged that my sons will find mystery on the planet
as I did?
How sweet the slow spring! May already and the canopy not out yet.
Woods quiet all winter.
Now I can't distinguish the many bird songs from where I sit.
Red maple flowers and first sugar maple leaves are, to me, the Christ
child
that's been coming.
The ancient poems and the new make the 1/10 inch of annual topsoil
from carbon dioxide loading.
As a humanist I want everyone pursuing happiness; as a naturalist
I sometimes pray for man's destruction. As a rationalist I admit
I lack data.
O to play slow and sure, even when the tune is fast. Inside an aquifer
of love for the audience.
Not to fear or even necessarily obey the changing wind's
direction. Being here I breathe and make the atmosphere as seen
from outer space.
The song of the world will often take you far from yourself. There
will be no self. How will you know yourself?
By knowing thyme and dandelion, the blue jay from the hawk,
the heron in its swamp, black cherries and the one pear at the junction
of the trails.
They are yourself.
life is full of choices and chances
single’s dances and double romances
life moves on while stories are told
time can’t be bought, it’s only sold
there’s a light that dims each passing day
of Sons and Daughters lost along the way
Somewhere under the Tangerine Sky
it's near impossible to read his face
never met the man he tries to replace
too high the gamble too high is the cost
another year taken and another year lost
life moves on while the stories turn gray
of Sons and daughters lost along the way
Somewhere under the Tangerine Sky
He’s a ghost from the coast
under the hot desert sun
the mercury rises and the air is dry
bye and bye
Somewhere under the Tangerine sky
A faded shadow standing in the wind
no longer the man he had once been
wandering lost and all alone,
the price he pays for all the wrong
More and more memories fade away
of sons and daughters lost along the way
Somewhere under the tangerine sky
He's a ghost from the coast
under the hot desert sun
the mercury rises and the air is dry
bye and bye
Somewhere Under the Tangerine Sky

Summer lyric
Summer’s Gone
(Beach Boys from album “That’s why God made the radio”)
Summer's gone
Summer's gone away
Gone away
With yesterday
Old friends have gone
They've gone their separate ways
Our dreams hold on
For those who still have more to say
Summer's gone
Gone like yesterday
The nights grow cold
It's time to go
I'm thinking maybe I'll just stay
Another summer gone
Summer's gone
It's finally sinking in
One day begins
Another ends
I live them all and back again
Summer's gone
I'm gonna sit and watch the waves
We laugh, we cry
We live then die
And dream about our yesterday
Christmas lyric parody
Christmas comes
Comes on snow laid way
All the way
With time to pray
Family folks have come
From wherever they stay
My joy fulsome
Reaches great height on festive day
Christmas comes
Under the sky grey
Frozen winds blow
Carol to hum
Dance round fir tree if I may
Another Christmas comes
Christmas comes
I sense fully within
My mind is keen
Feels delight
Live the time again and again
Christmas comes
I’ll watch the snow-flakes dance
We sing, we sigh
Time passes us by
Joy becomes memory to stray

Modest Russian flowers
Are blossoming on my balcony
In the summer:
Geraniums, camomiles, small roses,
Carnations, nasturtiums and a decorative string bean.
It is my tiny garden
Under the roof of the twelfth floor of the house.
But the sun
Every morning welcomes us,
And the charming fluffy bumblebees visit each flower.
We have no summer residence
Or our own garden on the earth.
Therefore a balcony
Is our favourite place.
Somewhere far away,
on the other side of this planet
my friends live in their countries.
I never met them in person,
But I see their faces and characters,
I hear their thoughts and fine poetry,
I feel joy and pain of their souls.
I love my familiar unfamiliar friends
And I miss them.
But soon they will send me
Seeds of their own gardens
and of their own home flowers.
How wonderful it will be –
to have boxes or pots with flowers
from each of them!
I shall look at their flowers,
To think about my far friends
and to pray this summer
on the twelfth floor, on my balcony
In a delightful Garden of Friendship.
Ah, what beauty around!
This day began deliberately.
Even the sky and river Neva have a same a blue colour.
Between them domes fly,
and a thin steeple rises
with a little gold ship at the top.
In the Smolny Cathedral,
the bells whisper.
On the Gulf, calm and silence prevails.
I see unearthly beauty
in the lacy lattices of fencings;
lanterns guard bridges for you,
my St. Petersburg-Leningrad!
Here, palaces have stretched wings.
Here are fountains, as if a mirage.
The architects and masters
of the different countries and epochs
have constructed the Hermitage
next to the Neva.
Delightful cathedrals,
and the most elegant Summer Garden.
This proud facade of city is the fruit of a talent,
the tears and the loving of them.
Stone lions and sphinxes sit observing the Neva.
They look mysterious, even strict,
as if they store secrets and the past of my city
in these restless, difficult days.
I see Nevsky Prospekt in flood of lights,
and the Summer Garden - the SILENCE lives there!
I see for a window of my love and memory
So many different, beautiful days!
