I Never Thought It Would Be Like This

I never thought to see a man’s bones glistening white.
Nor see disembodied limbs flying left and right.
I never thought to see mud the colour of red
Nor see young men blown to bits or laid dead.

The rain isn’t water its blood mixed with tears
Trenches full of bloated corpses, lice, fleas and fears
No time to bury them all, but those that receive an earth overcoat
Are disturbed, exhumed by bombs, thrown in stagnant trenches to float.

Blown from their resting places scattered far and wide
Dodging, not only bombs and shells, but limbs landing by our side.
Men caught and ripped to shreds with razor wire and tracer shells.
Left to die hanging there, moaning, screaming, no funerals with church bells.

I never thought to see these things; I just thought victory, honour and glory
Not see death, destruction, waste and sights so disgusting and gory.
I only wanted to fight for my King, family and country
I never thought it would end, this massacre, mortal eyes should not see.

It is the centenary year next year of the beginning of the Great War, I was inspired to write this after finding out I had a great Uncle that signed up for the Army, for King and Country .. he died at the end of September 1918 in France, never to return.

"I carry your heart with me(I carry it in my heart)I am never without it.
                        Quote _ by E.E. Cummings

Lovely Lottie, you were my heart and life
Living to make mischief never complied
Antics so constant she enjoyed the strife
Jack Russell terrier puffed up with pride.

Postman received a particular bark
Then quiet until those letters did drop
All hell would break loose the dog went berserk
Mail ripped to shreds until frenzy did stop.

Sneaking upstairs she would jump onto bed
Brown eyes shone with most sincere pleading look
In truth, no problem she slept like the dead
Smiling I settled with favourite book

So many years and such a faithful friend
Heartbreak so painful when her life did end.

Girl Uncompromised

You touched my face and said goodbye, and looking back you met my eyes. A spark of what, regret perhaps? You left me wondering why.

Who do I owe this heartbreak to? Another girl? Or perhaps, two? “Oh, it’s me, not you,” you lie. Save your metaphors.

My eyes filled up with burning tears, a testament to all the years. I never even had a clue, for all I ever saw was you.

How can a light that burned so bright, turn to darkness overnight? Can fall to pieces on the ground, my broken heart’s in tatters now.

Tattered, shattered, ripped to shreds, a broken thing now halfway dead. You left me gasping for each breath, drowning in this little death.

I rise up from the bed we shared, and look into the bathroom mirror to try and see what’s wrong with me, that you should walk away.

I look into wet eyes so blue and see the me, that you saw, too. My inner self stared back at me, and told a startling truth.

I see there’s nothing wrong with me, no reason why you set me free. No reason that you broke my heart. I’ve been the same, right from the start.

I refuse to play the blaming game, of wondering why you didn’t stay. I’ll live to love another day. My heart is good and strong.

So like a Phoenix I will rise to wipe the teardrops from my eyes, and never will I compromise the person that I am.

For I’ve been faithful all this time, loyal, true and always kind. A gentle soul and thoughtful mind, and I will heal this heart.

So walk away, is what I say. It doesn’t matter anyway. Another love will come my way, and you’ll be soon forgotten.

I’ll put my heartache on a shelf, and live to love despite myself. My head I’ll hold up proud and high. I will remain uncompromised.

War, I Never Thought It Would Be Like This !!!

I never thought to see man’s bones glistening white.

No time to bury all, but those that receive an earth overcoat
Are disturbed, exhumed by bombs, blown in stagnant trenches to float.

They signed up so young and full of their patriotic duty, yet this is how is ended for most of them.

The raw delight and
wonder of an eager
child-poet lay scattered
across the floor.

A baby's coo squeals from
the aging pages babbling
forth childish nonsense while
tired cliches wind lazily through
trite rhymes lacking lyrical luster.

Still, each precious verse endears
me to the memory of a precocious
youth when poetry was simple
and an unspoiled world
lay bare age old secrets
calling out to be discovered.

Author's commentary:

I don't remember what inspired me to write my first poems, but there was always something about
language. Something profound, something powerful, something pure.

I had no natural talent, and thankfully I didn't know it for I might have given up.

But eventually, and by sheer accident, I pieced together something that worked proving
poetry is not reserved solely for those with the predisposition but is also born of
passion, study, and discipline.

It was 15 years of frustration and tears as poem after bad poem was ripped to shreds by
seasoned writers with invaluable, albeit sometimes harsh, advice before I created anything
worthy of being read. But I am in love with poetic art so have persevered with humility
and gratitude in the face of rejection until finding a rhythm of my own. And though a bit
of time may sometimes pass before I am moved to write again, the words eventually spill
forth, and with a bit of luck and ingenuity, I will write a profound piece of insightful
prose stirring pride in the hearts of my mentors whose opinions I hold so dear.

For me, it has never come easy but with a deep-rooted love for the art and an obsession
for one day authoring a single, perfect verse, I hope to be unified in spirit with the
ghosts of poets past inspiring and encouraging others to keep the craft alive.

Monotonous Black

The pain I've felt this past year
Makes me wonder how I made it to here

The pain and the tears --- built up in shame
Go for a lot of one person to blame

The pieces of my heart ripped to shreds
This current life I've bled and I've bled

I've lost a lot and gained absolutely nothing back
Like my world is miserable and completely caked in black

The stars in the sky --- shine no more
This life I lead on repeat --- constant horror

The sheltered human race --- so unintelligent and so small
Nobody will ever be there to constantly catch your fall

Truly alone, exquisite, and so very bleak
Very rarely will you ever find what your passionate soul seeks

Sinister darkness --- and an invisible way
Dance shadows around you --- beckoning to play

3:30am --- the blistering evil thickens around
Jumping and shaking with every sound

Paranoid whispers --- tales of the old
Shuttering and shaking in this poisonous cold

My breath swirls crispy in front of my nose
Curiously wandering deep inside --- where nobody ever goes

Evil and laughing the sounds turn your back
But once again you turn around --- and there's nothing but monotonous black

The voices and whispers curse you in vain
Looking for somebody to always point the blame

Waves of the visions of places you see
Will never again, ever again --- be

The Earth it crumbles under your feet
Searching for something you know you'll never seek

Frustrated and shunned you want to cry
And deep inside --- you want to die

Inside your soul grows smaller and dim
Lost your way once again to him

Separate and confused you try to ignore it and live
But absolutely can not without the lessons he gives

Scared and confused --- lost and distraught
The way he knows you can be --- you are not

Giving up from conflicted pain of the past
Nothing --- for me --- ever is good enough to last

So here I dwindle and disintegrate in despair
Waiting weak and exhausted --- 'til I can be there...

Premium Member Nine Lives

I struck out on my own around a year old
life was so full of fun, so many things with
which to play, a leaf scuttling by, a rustle
in the undergrowth. I was enthralled.

I stood on a road watching intently
a little mouse. A car shot past bowling
me over and slicing off half of my tail.
It stung like hell and dripped blood.

Finding a cool stream I placed my tail
within, oh the blessed relief I knew
I had been lucky, one life now done.

My next life also flashed by as
hunter became prey, I ran for
my life from a pack of hungry
wolves barely escaping their
razor sharp fangs and hot breath.

Fishing for salmon I ventured
in too deep and got swept away
tumbling through rapids, banging
into rocks lucky to be washed ashore.

Bedraggled I lie in the sun
I swallowed way more water
than I drink in two days.
Shivering as I dry off.

Maybe four is the charm
as now I am much wiser.
Oh no I followed my nose
to an enticing exciting smell.

It led me straight into a mire
churned up by rooting pigs
I was being sucked down
exhausted I finally lay still.

Well a miracle happened
the muddy slime released
its deathly grip and I was
able to slowly wriggle free.

What a state my fur was in
muddy slime all over me
only one thing to do and
that's take a hated bath.

As I rolled in the shallows
I felt a change in pressure
and ran for my life chased
by angry snapping jaws.

Piranhas I had disturbed
Nearly ripped to shreds
I slipped away to rest up.

Unfortunately as I drifted
off I started getting stung
I was under attack from
angry bees I was lying
right over their hive.

Fast as a streak I headed
yet again for the river
and dunked myself again
and again till they were gone.

Seven lives already used up
and I was still only three years.
A few years past uneventfully
I am getting the hang of things.

One dark stormy night
sheltering in a leafy tree.
It got hit by lightning
knocking me to the ground.

Fur still burning I looked
a real fright, a cartoon cat
with hair on end whilst all
I really wanted was a quiet life.

Well I have used up eight
of my nine. I now mainly
sleep my days away. The
urge of adventure quietly rests.

My day will come soon
now as age takes its toll.
I am stiff and nearly blind
so I lay down a final time.

Premium Member A Dress Blew Up the Internet

A dress blew up the internet: a fact that's strange but true.
It seems that some saw white and gold, while others, black and blue.

For nearly one full day or more (a web eternity),
On Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, ’twas all that one could see.

The cat memes and the llamas too had to take a backseat,
And ISIS, CPAC, trending down, did scarce receive a tweet.

The fabric of the universe was nearly ripped to shreds:
A world divided into camps by how they saw these threads.

Some, like a double rainbow, trip; they ask, "What does it mean?"
And others know we're all quite mad; the dress is orange and green.

The world itself could be on fire, in greatest need, distress,
But none would care until we knew the color of this dress.

The physicists, psychologists, the learned men of science,
Unveiled the doubt that shadows cast on visual reliance.

The theologians and the priests assuage our image flawed,
For if we cannot trust our eyes, can we believe in God?

The wise man knows this too shall pass, finds comfort mid the rift;
The silver lining in the cloud: the dress presents a gift.

For when the dreaded question's raised, he knows he's off the hook
When asked the no-win question, “Dear, how does this make me look?"

But if he's feeling spry and young, ambiguous but clear,
He'll say, a twinkle in his eyes, "No dress improves you, dear!”

----------

I wrote this a few years back when the image of the blue/brown dress was all the buzz on social media. Still trying to collect and get some of my earlier stuff over here to "home".

Rapids Ahead

I hear the canyon echo the cascading eddies’ volume,
Growing louder as I paddle closer to run the descent,
To enter the lake past water, hidden rocks, and seething foam,
While an eagle soaring the gorge shrieks an impending portent.

The walls are too steep for portaging the cataract in front,
So either I seek another route or forge on straight ahead.
To challenge destiny bewilders the passive goer’s want
When serenity in life is a more secure goal instead.

Cannot the way be more perilous when fate meets its limits?
I glide my canoe between the boulders, avoiding the onslaught
Of being ripped to shreds when thrown about in the driving rapids;
I break, turn with the oar this way and that and never ease off!

Then my fear subsides when the waters calm as I ride the crest;
I’ve come this far and have further to go before I can rest.

Premium Member God Saw a Prize

My world a chasm of utter darkness
Dreariness enveloped me like a cloud
Bound by chains in an abandoned fortress
Tormented body - a field freshly plowed
Accomplishments ignored; voice never heard
Wondered why on earth was I even born
Treated like clipped wings of a fallen bird
Ripped to shreds, I could no longer be torn
Unsettling to be taunted by others
When all you do is exemplify love
Why is it so hard to love one another
As commanded by the Savior above
I tried so hard to find favor in their sight
All efforts were unfavorably received
I began to pray and was bathed in light
Chains started falling, my sentence reprieved
God looks at me and sees a worthy prize
The Lord loves all of his children the same
I’m no longer concerned about man’s eyes
Ill-conceived judgments nor secular names
The name of the Lord is a strong tower
His mighty name is worthy to be praised
I thank him for his redemptive power
For being my light on the darkest of days
In times of despair God spoke from above
Through His Word, He counseled and He advised
Keep His commandments - Keep walking in love
I am His, I am loved, and I am a prize!
