8th grade algebra class
Hyper chit chat from black-caped Louis
And his stringy long-haired buddy Richard
In the hallways before class they slap
The bare back necks of unsuspecting classmates
Stamping foreheads
Making the nuck nuck and whoop whoop of Larry Moe and Curly
That’s what they were re-enacting
With knees slipped under their tiny desks
As Mr. B has his back turned
Scratching formulas from his nails on the blackboard
When he pivots like a pitcher to boos
Lifts his toes to first base and baseball throws
The felt eraser full of all his mis-calculations
A lifetime of rage
Poof powder
Waffle imprint on Richard’s cheek
A cloud of chalk blonds his hair
Beards his performance grin
Richard has a look like when he’s seen his dad
Come home again and again and again
After happy hour
Leaps to his bedroom door
Holding the side of his face
“You can’t do that! You can’t do that!”
Out he disappears
Mr. B clasps his hands and fixes his face to his family
“Now for quiet.”
And we don’t dare say anything.
We paid the price for hasty choices made
and cried our tears for dreams put to the blade.
The lessons learned a hefty price we paid.
Against our woes, we rail — the urgency to bail.
Excuses very stale — comparisons must fail?
With truthful knowledge, man must themselves arm,
protecting him from possible great harm,
as ignorance deceptively would charm.
Lament will take its toll — do travel to-wards goal.
Some silver tongues extol — their lavish lyrics roll.
Plumose-like memories that tease then fade.
A fair comparison to current ails,
the signs of growing rapprochement disarm.
Ineffable the mysteries of t’ soul.

Spin spin, turn turn,
Hold her close, hold her firm,
Then Streamline away,
And Side Step and Sway.
Feelin' the rhythm,
Music's for livin',
Keep to the beat,
Moves that repeat.
Between pairs it's fair,
To copy Ginger 'n Astaire,
If your partner can release,
She'll look like Charisse.
You gotta dance in special shoes,
So they'll know you paid your dues,
When a song's in your heart,
Your performance should start.
Always put beauty on display,
Leading in Form the proper way,
Hitch Kick and Hesitation,
Showing off, no reservation.
Gliding on ice 'cross the floor,
Passing Twinkles, so much more,
Spirals and Pivots, all you can do,
Stay to the Count the whole way through.
Now you know the secret of dance,
The lady looks good, nothing's to chance,
Affectionate sharing is what you do,
Together in life, for both of you.

We must stop dastardly.. bastardly behaviour
Bold in vogue rogues in brogues who're flighty

Savour cultural gold or it will be nighty nighty
Rascal perky castle floats in quirky murky moats
Nobody notes same gory story just Tory turncoats
Glory gloats as caning boats is still gaining votes
Knaves & slaves sent to their graves scapegoats

No quips please about fish and chips is Portuguese
Although clues in London dish introduced by Jews
On our knees seeing trees not the wood our disease
Not just pasty views need other hues cultural engraver

No blot of the don't give a jot lot be a melting pot bather
Britain’s future paver.. tutor & life saver could be FLAVA
insufferable people
it’s city life
like the train bum
We see him way too much
once a week anyway - he's notorious.
you can’t just loom over someone
stand too close
I can smell him, gross
get out of my space
get out of my face
stay an arm’s length away
He makes me miss covid isolation
There’s vulnerability in human interaction
Charles asks me with his eyes
I look away - which says ‘no,’
but I’ll let you know.
As we slide into the station
I step back
and Charles steps between us
my exit, now behind Charles, is blocked from view
and Charles pivots to subtly block his exit
until the doors close and Charles steps out.
In football that would be a ‘pic’
in basketball a ‘rub’
but there are no flags here
no fouls or whistles
we’ve practiced this for years
sheering away, steering away
misguided messieurs

Augury
As the shine of the sun sets down
In the far away horizon
In villages as in the towns
And dusk stealthily makes its dawn,
The sky awhile pivots to pink
While clouds wafted by woeful winds
Seem in the firmament to blink
Racing across the sky with spleen.
Does the pink sky augur a storm,
Tempest, typhoon or tornado
That may buildings and trees deform
Without a tinkle of ado!
Does it herald devastation
Of fauna and flora on land,
Of harvest and cultivation
And rocking of boats on the sand!
Nature seems to have its own way
To admonish human beings
To hold their boats firmly at bay
And arouse their inner feelings
To keep those near and dear to them
In safety and security
Until the end of the mayhem
Heralded by the augury.
To scoff inklings of such omens
Is to invite spates of worries
From the clutches of a demon,
Let one`s ship sink in the deep sea,
Allow storms to set one`s house flat,
Disregard clues from the divine,
Let the wild winds whip off one`s hat
And snub signals from the sublime.

The Musks
Homonyms, closeness or likeness,
name or smell, be all there,
creates vanishing impetus,
Twit byes and scents to air.
Brut (cologne) was by Faberge,
Joe Namath modeled them,
Brit's Unilever owns today,
autistic Musk use--'um.
Kicked-up raw earth lingers...consorts
just when a mug pivots,
trigger the hounds and all their sorts,
unfeeling and vicious.
Commercial Brut Musk spray wear's off,
sure and forward sashays.
Refine defines, sign-wavers scoff,
Blue Origin tweet praise.
Like Men in Black bruises those teased,
bypass pedos and smile,
a wound-up car humming was eased,
brute Musk in Space-X style.

*RZ & HMS.
A polished skeleton gleams in the porch light,
meshing gears rattle silver bones.
He slides tubes under his legs,
pivots on a straining fulcrum,
knee’s unlocking a juddering thrust.
He rides by night
pondering a nocturnal test flight.
Lights flicker as wheels turn.
Head bent, he powers downhill,
lamps sucking energy
through metallic stems.
Stringy tendons
knotted to angular levers,
then uphill,
dynamo stuttering, counter-assaults
of implacable darkness.
The dim road
saps,
but he will not stop.
He imagines he has a blueprint
for a flying bike.
He believes that a drawing
can be bolted together by thought.
He imagines an alloy so light
it can be lifted intact
from the page — be airborne.
The boy turns for home,
there is work to be done,
wings to be hammered together
on paper anvils.
In memoriam: Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022. May she Rest in Peace.
Gracious and a constant all my life,
not bending to public opinion o’ strife,
your sharp wit could cut like a Bowie knife.
With statesmen you did meet—had an excellent seat.
Paddington Bear, so sweet—your compassion, not beat.
You’re honoured as a national treasure,
never resorting to artful pressure:
Deus ex machine per Measure for Measure.
You danced with those freed—gifted a French Guard stead.
You have lived by a creed—example to us indeed.
Remembered as beloved mother and wife,
seventy years on the throne: quite a feat.
There’s no more need of any embrasure.
For your esteemed family, hearts now bleed.
Poetic form: Suzette sonnet.
The title of the poem refers to Paddington Bear saying ' Thank you Ma'am ... for everything...' when he 'took tea' with HRH in celebration of the Planinum Jubelee in June 2022.
