Premium Member White Man Came, Took Everything

They sailed from ports
From Europe's past
To Ancient Civilisations
How long would they last

Genoa, Santander
To name just two
Galleons, traders
Who helped who

Distant lands
So far from their home
Indigenous tribes
Whose kings they'd dethrone

Aztec and Inca
Civilisations iconic
Along came the white man
Chronic

Pillaged for riches
To send back home
To fat bellied monarchs
Whose throne's groaned

Indigenous culture
Stripped from their land
Preached new culture
Forced to understand

Great civilisations
Of this planets past
With wanton greed
Would never last

Civilisations modern
Whose next on the list
New Guinea tribes
White mans twist

To look back
At the carnage thrust
White mans greed
Was their only must

For all the lands
Who felt their sting
White man came, took everything

Queen Alexandra

a post from 2014
for my beautiful granddaughter, Alexandra

After 13 days of confinement,
a caterpillar broke out of her butterfly egg,
Then ate the shell and pipevine leaf,
upon which it was laid,
A small fuzzy caterpillar,
with red spikes sticking out her sides and top,
She noticed on her middle,
a bright yellow colored spot-

Pipevine plants are toxic,
to things that are alive,
But for Queen Alexandra,
they would help her to survive,
These leaves would be her food source –
a repellent to her foes,
And if a predator caught her,
they’d vomit up and go-

Queen Alexandra wondered,
where on earth she might be,
Glancing at a tree canopy,
1,300 feet above the sea,
She noticed the thick greenery,
covering all the ground below,
And knew that only in a rainforest,
could this kind of vegetation grow-

Queen Alexandra didn’t know the name,
Papua New Guinea,
The tropical rainforest home,
to the largest butterflies that be,
Loggers destroying habitat,
collectors catching this species fast,
Predictions for her family –
only until the year 2021 to last-

Queen Alexandra as a caterpillar,
ate and grew for 120 days,
Shedding her skin six times was work,
not any fun or play,
Then she tightly clung
to the underside of a pipevine leaf,
And changed into a pupa,
the outside hardening as a protective sheath-

Inside changing her looks,
” metamorphosis” in her safe cocoon,
Forty days later emerging as a butterfly,
in hours long before noon,
Her 12 inch wings were mostly brown,
with pale yellow hues,
Her brother’s wings were smaller,
with streaks of iridescent blue-

So flying up they joined a group –
Queen Alexandra and her brother,
A gathering of butterflies together, you see,
is referred to as a “flutter,”
For about three months they’d fly,
at the top of the tree canopy,
This endangered “Queen Alexandra” Butterfly,
a beautiful rarity to see!

If a poem or essay can end with a conclusion or its opposite, either one,
Can it be of any use to anyone?

Do the discrepancies and disparities, dualities and densities, reflect only
      the dementia
Of the bearer of the pencil?

First entertain, then enlighten if you can. One stretches truth in order to
      pretend,
Another leavens with levity one’s inevitable end.

Most days it's not possible to bring your life into an expressible state.
Disparate hopes, arduous chores, word choices. And, of course, the
      state of the state.

Driven by ideas rather than rhymes, for it is not metres, but a
      metre-making argument,
That makes a poem. Convenience store or university English
      department

The day's disputes, down to the meaning of the weather, leave you
      indisposed
To share your heart of zero and your inner rose.

It is the strong force, the energy of the loved ones combined with
      cooperation for good or war.
Dad's years in New Guinea fighting Japs, he said, were his best by far.

The best that can be said or done is Be where you are. Love the one
      you're with
Not necessarily an adult of the opposite sex, perhaps just a kid who
      hates math

And school, dresses goth, reads rarely but learns a lot from movies and
      YouTube,
Has the presence of mind to say I am who I am, deal with it. That's who
      I want to be

And have always been. Today clean the house, again. Woke up this
      morning to two thoughts:
How sweet to be alive! Life is tough.

Premium Member Icebox Disaster

Icebox Disaster
Only living son
Home from steamy jungles of New Guinea
Wearing strips of a Master Sergeant
Tales recounted from Australia – Sydney R & R –
In spear points and javelins;
Malaria still traced upon
A war tanned face;
No more holding breath -
Four years of halting steps -
Reaching for the mail –
Cringing at the doorbell’s
Unexpected
Shrill screams,
No blue star hangs upon a window,
Relief sighs
So grateful for hugs held
Extra seconds
In reunion
Though shocked eyes hide
To see a frame so thin -
Hoping darkness covers memories
Reappearing uninvited;
House filled with booming debates
And scents of apple pie,
An icebox crammed with every good thing,
Not seen for years,
From harvest and from garden,
Visited so often
One morning screams of pain resound
As the icebox door crashes to the floor
Breaking a mother’s foot -
With no regrets
Only gratitude for family
Together again.

When my mother's oldest brother returned from war, he went to the refrigerator so often he weakened the door. One morning the door fell off right onto his mother's foot!

Premium Member Indigenous People, Indignant Take

Its 2009 in this modern world
But out there, their is a past
That's never unfurled
Hidden away in forests of green
Indigenous people rarely seen

Content in their continent
For thousands of years
Their neighbours, their only fears
Then along came a rider
From out of the unknown
To settle in their lands
And call their home, home

As borders are crossed
Over aeons of time
What was today
Tomorrow's not fine

Was the cross for the good
For visitor or host
Who prospered
And who lost the most

The America's have taken their toil
Gold prospectors, eroded soil

The Oceanic, New Guinea lands
Oil exploration, next to plan

Africa, the animal world
Diamonds and Ruby's for pretty girls

Asia, the plateau steps
Minerals, take what we can get

Europe, populated first
No indigenous left, no more thirst

We are all indigenous people
From forest to ground
From ape to thee,
That's why we get around
It's taken millennium
For us to be
Do we have to start again
And get back up the tree?

Nature's Beauty Pageant

Nature held a Beauty Pageant
Guess who was crowned a crest?
A flowery green meadow was the stage and rostrum
Watch who won the contest.

Well, the peacock from India was crowned beauty King
The bird of paradise from New Guinea became Beauty queen.

And last but not least was the Indian tiger, runner up
But care he for beauty that he might as well sup?
And what care any of them
for accolades, crown or cup?

Other contestants were the gorgeous leopards
and the flimsy beauteous butterflies
They'll be crowned
next time around.
For beauty tis rich in supplies.

But nature-lovers alone applauded the flamboyant winners
who gaily stood upon the flora
They did come out with 'flying colors'
Around them nature's beauty an aura.

Miss world bird of paradise yet unaware of her placing
The peacock endowed by God a crown
They might never know of this showcasing
At our staring, gawping, they might just frown!

Then there are those unsung unawarded yet perfect beauties
both among mortals and animals
who join no display contests nor pageants
yet are undeniably glamorous nonetheless
for beauty ain't exclusive
to önly beauty contestants.

Premium Member Who Is the Giant of Them All

WHO IS THE GIANT OF THEM ALL

Animals or humans, who is the giant of them all?
Bearing a two sheathed wings, the Hercules Beetles
crash the Titans (beetle) growing more than six inches.
Down the dirty waterways of China is the Mekong catfish
extending at ten feet, tummy-filled with one
full swallow of a child... Horrible!
Godzilla in Japan's sea is the Nomora Jellyfish!
However, the tipped nightmare fuel
incorporeal spill is not at all hazardous.
Jamison Stone, an eleven year old boy,
killed almost, this wild giant hog of 1051 lbs.
Lizards like the giant Salamanders aren't cute at all--
measuring six feet long: the largest of their kind!
Nuisance to Australia's dangerous wildlife, cane toads,
originally are found in South and Central America!
Power and beauty
quiets all his challengers when Percheron
runs, runs fast in a horse race!
Savory staple is the spider Crab but warning!
Their claws can do some serious damage!
Under a tree, don't be shock of the flying fox:
vampires to sweet-juices of fruits in New Guinea...
Weighing over a ton, Trigger is the cow for truckload of macs!
Xenopos are Cameroon Goliath that can live up to fifteen years.
Yes, humans are tough but compared to these behemoths,
zings we have are just their toys!

Australia looks like its being used?
To be the tip of a wedge is my peruse?
Warring groups and outside interests
World impacters are maybe the UN-guests
Mineral rich, have i read such before?
Often in history, such a descriptive sore'
Follows then a war, i say don't be surprised
Paupa's in the sights, (it didn't do covid)
And then warring alights? Destabilising inflow
Money and arms, Australia as a pawn with
False attention, an no doubt U N alarm.!!
Why not identify, whos gaining most? From
Such unrest from interior to coast' get to grip
With what is needed, peace and production
There could be seeded, protect the vulnerable
Its the better course, enquire of Jesus don't
Be left short, we all needed mothers and fathers
To be.' Yet we need even more the fruit of true
Love if you'll see, look around and see the better
Written in innocent blood within Gods Love letters.'
