Staircase

Beneath the staircase,
In the dark,
Is a monster.
The owners of the house
Laugh,
When asked about the noises
Coming from the staircase.
The rattles, the moans,
They say:
Oh that’s just our little monster,
With a wink.

It is dark beneath the staircase.
Eyes blink,
Screams ring out,
Walls, shake,
The owners of the house
Keep the staircase boarded up tight
So the monster can never get out.
They watch it,
Day and night.
Til they feel they are the ones in the dark
They shudder, and shake the feeling away
They are doing what they must.

There are spiders in the dark,
Under the staircase
They creep and crawl.
A mouse nibbles on a bone.
Dirt falls from the beams,
As the walls rattle
As she pounds to get out.
The little girl,
She huddles in a corner,
Locked up tight,
By her parents,
The monsters above the staircase.

Your Long Angular Feet

You don’t know me, but
I been riding here in this trundling lounge car
for two hours now, watching
you and your long angular feet,
while rumbling over these burdened tracks,
to silent Garden City, up there in Kansas
on the high wheat plains, sky bound!
I been wondering what your name is.
Alas, it is really none of my business,
but your silent intuitive look,
your expressive knowing gaze,
has intrigued me with repentant ambivalences, and
guilty acknowledgements within my mind,
far beyond any understandable explanation,
far beyond the passing distant New Mexico mountains,
as they inertly move with silent dogged violence,
out there, in the whirring passing blur,
beyond these curving airy Amtrak eyes,
of blue tint and orange penetrating glare,
wrought with distorting apparitions of yellow
and green wheezing monsters of morning light,
with the Super Chief masticating eastern miles,
like a termite boring ferociously, slashing
into the railroad ties of unyielding time;
And so we sit, staring out this bubble window in the sun,
and I been wondering about you.
I been believing you’re educated, I can tell,
by the look of your pursed lips,
indicative of past heartbreaks and meltdowns;
and I been believing you’re a democrat,
by your descending, unhearing stare,
indicative of past arguments with fools
who sleep near obelisks, set in old stone.
And as you gaze far away
through the lounge car windows,
deep into New Mexico, its heart and rocky soul,
I wonder what you’re remembering there,
smiling, at peace with your intended purpose.
It was really nothing to me or anyone else,
nothing earth-shaking or profoundly circumstantial,
but you got off in Albuquerque,
you and your long angular feet,
and you walked away, like a dead person
in an old film reel.

It is a story for the ages that generations will long repeat
for when it comes to these two lovers…it was their destiny to meet.

Two ordinary people…nothing more and nothing less.
He was not a knight in shining armor,
she was not a damsel in distress.

But from the moment they joined together…from that wondrous day
oh the castles they would build and the dragons they would slay.

Together they faced them all…monsters…ogres…vandals
wicked witches…big bad wolves…there was nothing they couldn’t handle.

And through all their years…through all their tears
through all their joys and sorrows and laughter…
from the moment they first met they lived happily ever after.

And every time their story is repeated…
it ends the same way…
without fail:
Sometimes in the middle of an ordinary life…
love gives you a fairy tale.

Premium Member Sound of a Thunderstorm

t sounds like there is an angry conductor in heaven
Loud crashing and banging that startles me
Was it supposed to rain tonight? I ask my echo dot.
She verifies that thunderstorms are expected

They are here now; it is frighteningly angry-sounding.
Did monsters escape from the bowels of hell and go up there?
Another loud clang of a giant symbol makes me wonder about electricity.
Will it be going out? This often happens during storms like this one.

It sounds like a Ferris wheel has collapsed.
Without people, for there is no screaming.
Only the loud angry thuds of destruction.
I visualize people being carried away downstream

In retro-wave glow, in twilight haze,
He rewinds the reel, lets static blaze.
Her voice returns like a phantom hymn,
Crooning of freedom, of shedding old skin.
Plaid jackets, cracked curbs, neon sighs—
They skated hard beneath pixel skies.

She was chaos, kohl-lined and cruel,
Spray-can dreams, a punked-out jewel.
Every scar a track, every slight a song,
She played it loud, dared the world to be wrong.
He watched her whirl like a comet unbound,
A canary in glass, too wild to be found.

And when she tapped his shoulder, said “Hello,”
The headphones split their worlds in stereo.
Her smile—an echo, her tape—divine,
Two rebels synced in magnetic time.

So let the boombox wail,
Let the vinyl crack and fail.
They’re dancing through the skips and hiss,
In every note, a stolen kiss.
No regrets, just sonic ghosts—
They haunt the chords they loved the most.

They dreamed of Saturn, of Parisian lagoons,
Of slaying monsters beneath twin moons.
She bled into ribbon, he into rhyme,
Together they bent the beat of time.
Now he’s grown, with plans and weight,
But presses play to recalibrate.

Does she linger in the hiss and hum?
A manifesto wrapped in drum?
Her voice still burns, her rhythm flies—
A spark beneath suburban skies.

So let the boombox wail,
Let the needle crack and flail.
They’re dancing through the skips and hiss,
In every note, a phantom kiss.
No regrets, just sonic ghosts—
They haunt the chords they loved the most.

She’s the flame in his cassette dream,
He’s the echo in her rebel scream.
Skateboards, static, cinnamon lips—
A love that lives in tape-deck skips.
So blast away the loneliness,
Let punk anthems cleanse the mess.
Like canaries in a coal mine song,
They warned the world, and still belong.

Premium Member Halloween Is Here

Air is altering its pattern
Dusks are getting crispier
Nights are falling earlier
Sun is taking time to rise up

Leaves are changing their colors
Trees are showing off their fiery flairs
Pine needles and acorns have scattered all over
Halloween is around the corner

Ghosts and goblins are appearing at the doors with vampires
Skeletons and ghouls are hanging out near front arrivals
Entries are surrounded in the webs of humongous spiders
Witches and Jack-o’-lanterns are getting ready to welcome visitors

Black cats are showing up
Owls and spooky bats are flapping their flutters
Crescent moon is decorating the night skies with its shiny silver
Town is preparing itself to entertain little monsters

Plump round pumpkins are showing shades of orange, auburn and ginger
Costumes are being bought in stores
Candy containers can be seen in shops’ every corner
Eager children are getting ready for Halloween pleasure

Houses are smelling with sweet scents of candles
Kitchens are spreading aromas of pies cooked with cinnamon
Taste buds are savoring spicy warm apple ciders
Families are ready to greet and treat trick-or-treaters

Premium Member The Sanctuary of the Forest

The long dark lonely road passing trees,
That haunt yet gives a message,
A warning to beware.
I smile as I see the trees wave,
Talking to my psyche.
We have a kindred spirit.
They protect from evil,
That beseeches my soul.
I am one with nature.
The forest is my sanctuary,
My freedom,
My independence,
My peace,
My heart.
The monsters have no power over me.
My guides surround and protect,
They are family.
So I smile as they welcome me.
Then magically, the forest comes alive and,
peace reigns over all.
Suddenly I see the truth of the forest,
The Unbelievable yet reality.
The secrets I hold deep,
As They allow to be seen,
Only by the one who instills loyalty and truth.
I offer protection and,
They show me a world of secrets in,
The sanctuary of the forest.

Premium Member A Brutal Sport

Football is a brutal sport
   It's boxing without pads

Bone-jarring collisions rattle the head
Collect too many, and you'll be dead

It also takes its toll on the knees
Scar tissue, arthritis ~ Wheelchair, pretty please

Not to mention the damage it does to the spine
   Which becomes a human shock-absorber at game-time

Of course there are all those famous Chicago Bears players
THOSE LEGENDARY 'MONSTERS OF THE MIDWAY:'
'Coach' Mike Ditka waddles around on two dysfuntional hips
All-Star Dick Butkus' shattered knees plant curses on his lips
And the 'Punky Q-B,' Super Bowl winner, Jim McMahon
Has helmet-bumped his way into the 'I'm-now-a-vegetable-can
Not to forget Dave Duerson: He entered Pro Football's Hall of Shame
When he took his own life, 'cos he couldn't remember his name

      But I'm a tough guy, a man's man, and here's what I say:
If I have to sacrifice life or limb, let it not be for a football play
~ Let it be to defend my country, the USA!

Premium Member Virtual Lunch With First Graders

Seven first graders with their mute buttons on.
Not knowing what to do when I ask them to unmute themselves.
This is a friendly lunch bunch where they are allowed to talk.
Not like the rest of their day when they are on mute unless called on.

One begins and suddenly they all begin. Talking at once, like kids do.
How can I not kill aliens with my enchanted bow?
I can build a diamond house.
My enemies will explode!

Lots of laughter. They all think someone is listening.
I am sure their parents are, because they are all at home.
Separated because of Covid-19, but today at lunch together.
I am the monitor; I listen and learn.

You can use special supplies and build a dark lord’s castle.
Guess what? Hey, guys, guess what? Listen to me.
Listen to Jackson, guys! A temporary pause.
My next door neighbor built his whole tower out of wool.

I made an iron block house! Giggle. Giggle. Laugh Laugh.
One child holds up his cell phone so we can see on his video.
This is Poindexter Meat Hooks, my mother’s fat cat!
In my game you can get bows, arrows, building supplies, gold and diamonds.

Want to see Roblocks? Okay. Yesterday I was the first one to win Team Gray.
I play Minecraft. Want to see? Sure!
You know that firemen are supposed to put out fires, right?
No one hears, because they are all talking.
I made my fireman BURN UP!
Lots of laughter. Giggling. Tittering.
One time I got in creative mode and hid from the monsters.
I’m only allowed to buy free stuff on my computers.

Giggle Giggle Laugh Laugh
I am only allowed to buy free stuff on Minecraft
Watch out! You are going to run into someone!
A car crashes and everyone explodes with laughter.

Semi normal for maybe the first time in a long time.
They all want to do Lunch Bunch next week.
I would not miss it for the world.
Bringing them a teensy bit of normal.

Premium Member Dragons Monsters Daemons Ghosts

Dragons, Monsters, Daemons, Ghosts

Oh !, to be the slayer in your world of Dragons.
Oh !, to be allowed to extinguish all those fires,
the fires that light the way for your Monsters, your Daemons,
the Ghosts that haunt, who’s claws hold back all that could be.

Could this ethereal world I envision, be an illusion ?,
a figment of my imagination ?, a perception blinded by
the none fulfilment of a dream, a desire, a need for more ?
Do these apparitions ?, these mythical images ?, these legendary
phantoms of the mind come on the wings of self-doubt ?

Walking on clouds – that silver lining – seems to be what I do.
In the light of day, rays of sunshine dissipate, melt away the path.
I am left to fate, floating upon the cruel winds of uncertainty.
Carried away, on the wings of fear ?, or is it indifference ?
