Once upon my life story...
Once upon a time I was an infant of only 5.5 pounds
Used to cry and make crazy sounds
Once upon a time I was a toddler obnoxious and hyper
I would play all day in my dirty diaper
Once upon a time I was an angry, spiteful kid
Almost everyday I got wrote up and sent to the office for the things I did
Once upon a time I was a ugly duckling
Picked on by girls because of how I looked, everyday I was sulking
Once upon a time I was a weakling
Unsociable I was and mean
Once upon a time I was neglected
The outcast with no place, I was rejected
Once upon a time I reached the age of thirteen
I decided to awaken a potential unseen
Once upon a time I was shunned because of my flaws
Now I am the exact opposite of who I was
Upon this time I am no longer a ugly duckling
Those same girls tried to flirt with me, (funny) in the inside I'm chuckling
Upon this time I am no longer weak
After years of training in martial arts I mastered my physique,
I challenged the football team to a one handed push up contest,
I laughed as I continued my winning streak
Upon this time I am no longer neglected
I am calm, patient, and collected
Upon this time I am eighteen
Graduated last week and now I set off to seek my dreams
And that's the end of my 'once upon a time' story
I’m from small town homes and rose bushes overgrown, with
Close-but-not-too-close-close-knit-crazies.
Where my best friend lives down the block and I make late night trips to her house past the town curfew, because I am from just inside the city limits.
Where I can’t drive underage in a non-road-legal vehicle on the road but I do it anyways.
From hydrangeas to big dead oaks with darkened limbs and forgotten branches. Unattended to hidden ponds with sand dunes keeping close company. Winding trails through the woven pines and golf cart rides through the night.
From two tracking at 2am, to popped tires riding on rims all the way home.
Bruised up and down and scratches I don’t know how I got.
I’m from sunday night football with crockpot cheesy potatoes
to rolling blackouts and chasing charter vans down flat onto our bottoms.
Muddy heels to get to the dance and paying seven dollars to watch my hometown football team lose.
I’m from where smoking our meat and video games in the garage is a party but we are the only company we need.
From corny jokes inside and out and witty humor, none taken. From where insulting one another is nothing but love and curfews are often a thing of the past.
Descending from lovejoys I am often filled with both love and joy,
I’m from oddballs and country folk yet we have evolved.
I’m from soccer games even when it’s raining. From no quitting all the way to you tried your best.
From high- highs and even lower lows.
I’m from the land of schnitzel, pickled beer, and pizza. From ‘go play outside’ and ‘walk it off.’ Nuts and bolts for christmas snacks to ‘honor thy mother and father.’ Sunday school lullabies and don’t use his name in vain, following all the common Godly precautions.
I’m from waking up early just to see the sunrise even though the trees are a war barricade from the burning fire you long to see. I’m from the fog that made my acres of yard an abyss that I can’t see through, even though I know what’s there.
I’m from family trips and a loving home, missing it when I’m gone and hating it when I’m there. I’m from supportive love and ‘can’t isn’t a word’. I’m from you can do anything if you work hard enough, and whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.
Being adopted living in the country
an only child but knew sweet contentment
although had beginnings of a stammer
life was happy feeling no resentment
At the age of 12 there on my own
watching my football team for the first time
being given freedom at Kilmarnock F.C
felt good just there myself so like rhyme
To Blackpool in '77 for my first hols alone
really felt good driving my mini on route
eventful time there lost wallet and car
but found car ok, so had a nice ice cream cone
Have felt fulfilled at Scots Assoc. for Stammerers
providing support for those who stammer
appeared on Scottish TV in '87 in advert
this felt good control in front of the camera
The holiday highlight of my life
arrive in Geneva at 90f so hot
Switzerland breathtakingly beautiful
go Jungfrau high snow/sun you've got
Then om 2012 I took early retirement
to make me so happy and fully free
having time to be in the countryside
watching nature and all there is to see
Looking back thinking of one so special
my dear Christine one so special and true
many great times spent over our 32 years
it's been a real whirl all because we said I do!
(This being my 2000th poem, I thought it appropriate to look at highlights in my life I had forgotten about and how they had influenced my life.)
Billy and Mary had the most beautiful love
story.
It was like something you read in a book or
seen in a movie.
They were next-door neighbors and best
friends.
Each milestone in life was made with each
other.
They knew each other all of their lives and
they both were the only child.
Billy and Mary attended the same elementary,
middle and high school.
The town that they grew up in was small and
everyone knew each other.
She was the head cheerleader, and he was the
captain of the football team at the local high
school.
They were voted King and Queen for three years
in a row.
By senior year they were inseparable and madly
in love.
After graduation, they went to the same college.
Billy got a scholarship to play football, and Mary
got into the nursing program.
Billy was headed to NFL until he broke his shoulder
in two places.
On that day, his dream of playing pro shattered.
So he took courses to become a coach, If he wasn't
able to play football anymore, he was determined to
invest in a young player that had his former dreams.
Mary finished nursing school, and they married the
following year.
They wanted to have a family, but it didn't come easy.
The couple had three miscarriages within the first
few years of marriage.
When they found out, they were pregnant the fourth
time, she had to go on bed rest.
They were elated when was in her third trimester.
But when she was seven months, she experienced
unbearable cramps.
Billy rushed her to the hospital and she was told that
she had to deliver the baby.
She was scared for herself and her child;Larry held and
comforted her while she was in active labor, it was touch
and go.
Then suddenly her vital signs started to falter; and she
started hemorrhaging.
They told Billy to leave; he was in shock; The team of
doctors did all they could to save her; She didn't make
it, and neither did her child. It left poor Billy, a widower
and childless at the tender age of twenty-three.

Read a book once
Folded the corners
To mark my progress.
It was sort of a
Wagon train read
Long, torturous,
A seemingly endless quest
For an unknown destination
Pictured only in the minds
Of others
Who
Sadly
Were only aggrandizing
What they were told.
The book I read
Had been chosen for me
By a deranged
English teacher/football coach
Before the era of the
Concussion Protocol.
The Book Report I wrote
Received an “A”
I believe because
I trashed the book
Question why it was assigned
As it was a tedious read
Containing statistical
As well as anecdotal
Documentation
Of its unreadability
Or more likely because
He was hung over
After the football team
Beat our traditional rival.
Wearing the silver and blue
Lone stars with loyal honesty that is true
Inviting those dressed in burgundy and yellow
With the mission ‘keep the politicians mellow’
For a Thanksgiving meal
Where the division standings are the big deal
Due to a tie
Eagles at day's end will say goodbye
To first place
Until Monday when brotherly love builds its case
Against the hawks
Underdogs right now by those who use chalk
But after the holiday dinner
Who will be watching this match for a winner?
Just a close game
With the feds having no name
But there is another reason
Why this gridiron duel is pleasing
A nice electric shot
Of the cover model advertising spot
Famed crowd friendly supportive group
Cheering in an attractive uniform suit
Having a certain look
Luring using their physical image like a fishing hook
Guys no longer asking, ‘can she cook?’
These stimulating flashing lights
From the squad protecting their knights
May stop festive fights
Or wake up someone who momentary may not be all right
Since the beast who is calm
After diffusing his egotistical bomb
Still has a mind
And the time
To be thankful and kind
All due to the high kicking line
Or numerous glasses of wine
Win or lose
It is hard to refuse
A football team playing the boys
While helping kids write to the North Pole for new toys
'Shorty', they called him from the very first grade in school.
He was seldom chosen for any game as a general rule.
He'd reached his maximum height of five feet six as a teen.
Though small in stature, athletic prowess lay dormant, yet unseen!
He tried out for baseball, football, even the basketball team.
Just to be a member of a team was his fervent dream.
Apprehensive coaches agreed to give the eager lad a chance.
Perhaps he could warm the bench - his ego it might enhance!
He was the third-string running back on the football team.
During the championship game the others ran out of steam
The score was tied - ten seconds remained upon the the clock.
He scored the winning touchdown! That day 'Shorty' became a jock!
The state final basketball game is still talked about today.
All the star players fouled out, much to the coach's dismay!
The score was tied - 'Shorty' was sent in with seconds to go.
He was fouled but with steady nerve, his was the winning throw!
He gave his all when called upon and was accustomed to the jeers,
But accolades were showered upon him by his coaches, fans and peers!
His coaches learned that 'tis best never to judge a feller by his size!
He might just be the winner who brings home the coveted prize!
MUDDLING THROUGH
It seems i'm in a quandary of a most perplexing sort.
I'm second guessing my enrire life without a firm retort.
I went fishing and I asked the fishermen, "What was his best way?"
"How about a tip or two," I never thought to ask the prey.
When I joined the football team I listened to my coach.
His game plans were solid, they gave a logical approach.
When I had a job to do, the tech manual was required.
If I'd asked what the airplane thought, I'm sure I'd soon be fired.
We take a different tact when love and romance are the aim.
We listen to the the other team, as if they'd throw the game.
We work to be the best we can to date a better class.
We listen to what the others say, and it bites us in the ass.
Now I'm even more confused, and I know not what to do.
I'll be myself, hope for the best, and somehow muddle through.
When we were just young kids hanging around
the one grocery store there was in town
drinking Yoo-Hoo and chewing Bazooka Joe
While we were joking, cussing and spitting
playing baseball, swimming or just sitting
Our innocence was dying and we didn’t know
A surprising change started taking place
our youthful thoughts and games had been replaced
by images of girls any place we’d look
All of a sudden they were everywhere
there was nothing to do but stop and stare
they had our brains beginning to boil and cook
Although they had always been there before
they were just whiny brats and nothing more
put upon this earth to only cause us pain
I can’t be sure how it happened or why
and honestly I didn’t even try
all we knew was they were driving us insane
There’s one good thing about hot summer days
was that there were only a couple ways
to stay cool there in the armpit of the state
The hotter the sun the less clothes we wore
girls in halter tops made the list for sure
and for a 14 year old boy that was great
Boff, boink, doing it, diddle, dip your wick,
the nasty, getting dirty, ball and stick
getting laid, got lucky, going all the way,
Rounding all the bases, home run, touchdown,
hide the sausage, squeaky and getting down
round and round, up and down or a nice payday
Though none of us had ever played the games
we sure became experts on all the names
but hey I guess we all had to have our dream
That’s what happens to imagination
when in a town with a population
that’s smaller than the average football team
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean to say
that girls were all we thought about all day
because there were times we had to eat and sleep
Now I smile when I think about back then
sometimes I wish those days were here again
but at least I have great memories to keep
Blue the beautiful sound of the sea waves raging to a roaring green
Blue look at the calm sky in the morning turn to fierce red at night
Blue is the colour of my favourite football team feel the golden excitement of the match
Blue taste the sweetness of those delicious deep purple plums hanging
Blue smell those pretty flowers the colour of violet growing graciously in the field
Green is the colour of jealously big and bad
Red is for danger and stands for anger and hostility
Gold is for victory and the magic of the game which makes me feel happy
Purple is the colour of imagination and spirituality
Violet is the colour of encouragement for others that you wish to see grow
