read a book once

Read a book once
Folded the corners
To mark my progress.
It was sort of a
Wagon train read
Long, torturous,
A seemingly endless quest
For an unknown destination
Pictured only in the minds
Of others
Who
Sadly
Were only aggrandizing
What they were told.
The book I read
Had been chosen for me
By a deranged
English teacher/football coach
Before the era of the
Concussion Protocol.

The Book Report I wrote
Received an “A”
I believe because
I trashed the book
Question why it was assigned
As it was a tedious read
Containing statistical
As well as anecdotal
Documentation
Of its unreadability
Or more likely because
He was hung over
After the football team
Beat our traditional rival.

John we were more fortunate. The books we were told to read were great ones Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Red Pony, To Kill a Mockingbird. I am sure you hated each page you turned. What a bad choice by a coach. I guess literature wasn't his greatest achievement. I sympathize with you when reading this ordeal of your's John. It's too bad you can't reverse the roles you being the teacher and making him read One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest lol. Thanks for sharing John...

I enjoyed reading your write. In school we wondered why they made us read a book. To learn/think or because they could. Why could we Not pick a book. Books can take one places they will never travel to. Books, they can bring us joy.... Have A Blessed/Happy Thanksgiving, Paula...................
