GRANDMA AT THE TRACK
foolishly
i threw the rock
and appeared
to hopscotch
until the ill of my ankle
violently mocked
i chalk it all up
to forget me nots
my mind over knees
ignores
the rusty gears
as my wrinkled hand
avoids resistance
hovering a half inch
above the bannister -
safe.
now i watch youngsters skate.
those whipper snappers
with the gait of a purebred horse.
i huddle with my overloaded purse
carrying 3 cell phones and mine,
a roll of ticket winnings,
leftover candy,
then i
chase my four-year old grandson
‘round the outskirts
as he weaves between strangers
taking my heart with him.
mind you,
the thoroughbreds
are resting soundly
on the bench.

i hate holidays
you see cousin Ralph comes over
and my days of fun
are over before they are even begun
his tousled hair,
his cutesy grin
eyes so fair
conceal a soul as dark as sin
he steals my toys
fights with the boys
spills the table with tea
and blames it all on me
He
climbs
up the
stairs
comes
sliding
down
the
bannister

and the one who faces
the glares is me
he once locked me in the loo
with no toilet paper
no water no scraper
now how the heck do i do
how I hate him I do
one day he put glue
in my shoe
there were nights that i wept
when he captured my bed
and snoringly slept
while i lay where Fido was fed
i hate it when he's at our house
this hateful ungrateful king of chaos

Fictional
All the times we shared
I look back now and it was like you were never really there
Indecisive behavior gave birth to your nature
A year wasted,
Bitter sweat it tasted.
Watch as the clock ticks faster
Over 300 days amounted and locked in a cannister
Then trown away and tossed over the bannister
Time is a valiable thing
Is what my heart sings
Especially one with whom i attached strings
Or so i thought
Now like a unstringed guitar
No song does it bring
5 days away from seing you
And a week til our anniversary
I guess the love you felt for me was false and not true
But i guess thats nothing new
Did you ever really care?
Were you ever really there?
I ponder but it matters not
Now its just a troublesome thought
In the beginning you used me as a support beam
Ranting about your ex and how he did you with his cheating
As I... the faithful; only struggled sometimes internally
No one to help me but my melodies
Such as my mind flows.
Like a vast sea
And still it wasn't good enough for you i see
So with you now. I plant this last tree
To tell you im becoming more of me
And spread my wings
Im free
I see a footbridge high above a gorge.
One bannister is gone; the other lies
on narrow rotting boards. Rough waters surge
beneath this passageway that creaks and sighs
in answer to footfalls of children who,
while clinging to each other, move ahead
with wary steps toward home and suppertime
and hope they'll soon be safely tucked in bed.
These innocents are not alone. Unknown
to them, an angel stands close by to keep
them safe from peril that could plunge them to
the depths. Tonight no one will grieve and weep.

Rosemary's Bed
Maylands Salvation Army, Girls' Home
I am in the entrance foyer of a large house.
The wood floor is highly polished.
There is a large stairway with a turned, wood bannister.
Dad is telling my three year old sister and me
that we must stay here because
he has to work and can't take care of us.
Mum has gone away somewhere.
THE MATRON takes our suitcases and *smiles* at us
instructs us to, "come with her".
Dad says, "he will come and visit us every Sunday".
I am taken to a dormitory and told which bed will be mine.
The bed on the other side of the fire place
belongs to Rosemary.
Our beds skirt, either side of a fireplace
that is midway along the wall, with rows
of beds on each side of it,
as well as opposite,
twenty beds in all.
At the end of the room is an alcove with a curved bay window.
There is a bed there, all by itself.
I can remember being so scared in this room.
The older girls told me, "there is a man with an elastic arm"
who lives on the roof
and, "he can reach down the chimney and grab you".
Although I didn't really believe it, a few nights later,
we were all woken by a piercing scream.
THE MATRON came down to investigate.
The girl who slept in the bay window bed, said,
" a man with a monkey's face" jumped on my bed.
THE MATRON searched everywhere inside and out -
we saw her flash light beam- out there in the darkness-
her report was, " it was nothing." -
probably one of the cats that lived in the wood pile.
I always had trouble sleeping after that
and after lights out -
although it was strictly forbidden -
I would creep across and climb
into Rosemary's bed.
Although her bed was an equal distance
from the fireplace as mine
the human warmth and contact made me feel safe
against unknown forces of the night.
I slept on the edge of nightmares until, finally
I left that place.

Gone are the mellow days the mild days
Now are the days when the color of your pen
Matches your shirt...
These are the days between the days
The days you don't know what I mean days
The 28 year days
The sliding Voice days
The days of great thought, great hunger
Of long lighted days and
Wet creamy days and
Unspeakables, those days
The days of drafts and mildew
The shadow days
The days of longing return
The unfluorescent days
Scattered days
The rare kid-like soda days
The "travel on!" Nowhere Man's days
The unknighted days
The days that watch for night
Suspiciously
Schismically
Detached days
Days of disconnect
Floating down our Broad Bannister
Each bumping nob another day
De day de day de day de day
And to bed you go my baby
Another day awaits...
Ahoy!

The bears are invited Grandpa said casually.
My heart turned cold.
I just got my closet put back together from their last year’s visit.
I decided I would hide my hot pink nightie, and my rainbow feathered boa.
Lulu and Mumu were my bear cousins from Arkansas, adopted by my Aunt Fran
Harmless except they loved pretending they were divas.
Last year they dragged everything out of my closet
And I mean everything
But did anyone stay to help me clean up? Of course not.
After school on Tuesday I came home to see Arkansas plates in our driveway.
My heart beat louder than a marching band.
Lulu bear greeted me with a huge hug.
She was wearing my hot pink nightie and it was ripped down the side now.
Mumu slid down the bannister; she had tightened my boa around her head
She looked like a 300 pound hippie, and she had ripped the arms out of my jacket.
We blew air kisses to each other
Actually, I had so much fun dressing them up I forgot about the mess.
They tried on all but five things in my closet.
It was great to see them preening and laughing.
I told them not to worry about the mess as we hugged good-bye.
Great visit, huh? I asked Grandpa.
We sent them with a cooler full of fish for the road after lots of bear hugs.
This year we had videotaped everything with our cell phones.
Best visit ever!
In restless winds and in shadows dark
over a sweeping plain of wheat so fair
a crumbling homestead stands against fate
with a wandering staircase going nowhere.
Warily, I clutch the creaky bannister
willing my feet to climb treacherous steps
up to the floor of Four...then I hesitate
for my spirit is overwhelmed and bereft.
Herein lies a faded, neglected nursery
a drooping jack-in-the-box with a frozen smile
a broken man-in-the-moon clock hangs limp
with a chilling breeze moaning all the while.
Thunderclouds blacken the distant horizon
like time that cloaks events from long ago
I do not possess the keys to unlock mysteries
but I entered the floor of nowhere..this, I know.
